I have a 15 year old daughter on the recieving end of her peers critism and it is affecting her deeply. To the point where she has no love or respect for herself. As a mother it is heartbreaking to hear the cruel things these "friends" say to each other and to try and counteract it with positive words is useless as she won't listen to what I have to say as I am just her mother. How do we fight something that has become the norm. To start as well as imput from home I feel there should be more programs run in schools to do with self esteem and respect for others for girls and boys as well. What do others think?

I was surprised at all the media hype surrounding this - my view of the 21 club was that it was no more than a sophisticated and organised version of what girls have been doing for a long, long time.

In FNQ, the nicely reworded girl gangs are referred to as "the posh girls" or the "in club". To be in their group is, apparently, far better than eating chocolate.

Boring and unposh as I am now and ever have been...I want chocolate.

Great post Leigh. I hope that mothers everywhere understand the essence of raising our daughters to be healthy: physically and emotionally.

It's sad, but it seems to me that we women are our own worst enemies. We are the ones responsible for putting so much pressure on other women by endlessly critiquing, picking and dare I say it, bitching.
Is it insecurity, maliciousness, or just plain shallow? I'm not sure. I do know, it should stop.

Great post. The pressure and ways and means of exerting pressure on young girls is intense. I read yesterday that in Sydney they actually have yms for kids with children as young as 3.
