MEDICS will be able to seek court orders forcing alcoholics and drug addicts into a hospital secure unit for up to 28 days under a trial scheme in New South Wales.

What a fantastic idea.......if they won't help themselves, force them into it.
Of course a 4 bed unit is not enough but it is a start.
Now of course I hope that there will also be sufficient support once they have been thru' detox. That will be the real decider.

totally agree Heather, it will take more then 28 days to kick it, they'll also need support and to be very strong once they get out

I'm sorry but I don't think this will be a very good idea. Firstly the government should be funding programs for addicts that want to get clean.
If they are forced to go thru this detox I'm sure the chances are very high that they will be back in the same situation within 12 months probably less. 1 month is definitely not long enough for the worst addicts to get clean and stay clean (which means dealing with the issues that got them there in the first place)
Sorry but it sounds like an election bandaid to me.
