How irresponsbile of them to run such a competition..there have been a few cases of this in the news over the last few years. I can see them in for a rather large law suit.
Poor woman, and her children..so sad :(

Years ago, when Ecstasy first became available to the youth at dance parties, there was a wide held belief that drinking large amounts of water stopped bad side effcts. A teenager died and it was discovered that her organs literally drowned due to the large volume of water consumed.
Look I think that the radio station had the right to hold this competition but they should have been more responsible, sought medical opinions first and had drink off's ( with enforced beaks) to find a winner.

A number of people have been fired from the radio station due to this incident including three of the djs who featured on the programme at the time.

I have heard that, but I thought that was due to the drug also, didnt know it could happen otherwise

Drinking lots of water reduces the salts in your blood that your body needs to survive. Too much, you die. Too little, you die. It is a fairly finely tuned balance regulated by your kidneys. If you don't urinate, the bladder just can't hold any more and it will back up into your kidneys...big problem. Also when you eventually do wee, especially if it is a large volume, you can go into shock from the sudden loss.
You would think that the radio station would have sought medical opinion before holding such a ridiculous contest.

I think the saddest thing about this whole thing is that it could have been prevented by giving the contestants a "Sports" Drink such as Powerade or the like to keep the electolyte balance correct.. such a simple thing really..
