Hi, I'm not sure if you know this but I have heard you can get some IBS vitamins from the chemist, not sure what they are like though or perhaps try a natropath.
I feel terribly for you, my Nana suffers greatly from it and I know her diet is now very limited.
I hope you find something that helps.

I suffer from it as well and have for years. I use peppermint oil tablets (Mintec - from chemist) or Colofax from the doctor. I also find peppermint tea works well.
I find the best cure for me(although it's kinda boring) is to cut out fatty foods and get some exercise. Easier said than done at times though.
One lady I know takes Slippery Elm capsules to help calm her bowel. And I think there is another medication called something like Zantac that is supposed to be quite good.
Hope that helps
Lea :)

Awful isn't it? I find ginger helps settle it down a bit. Basically it's just trial and error finding what you can and can't eat. :(

Sorry to butt in here ladies. But I had a few questions, if you don't mind.
I wondered how you discovered you had this condition, is there a test? With out going into the gory details, I have had problems with my bowels for as long as I can remember.
But it has just been in the last 2 years that it has gotten worse. I did visit the Dr about it once, but was told it was just a bug. It's just strange that I get the same thing every couple of months. I have felt a bit silly to go back to the dr again, but the episodes have me bed ridden for days.
Thanks :)

I have suffered with IBD (not IBS) for 25 years and had my large bowel removed 12 years ago x( Now I wish I had known this before but high doses of anti-oxidants (vitamins A, C & E) Coenzyme Q10, Grapeseed extract and Zinc will help to settle this debilitating condition :D Most of these are available in good multi-vitamin and mineral tablets BUT don't just take one a day you need to take one 3 times a day to get the benefit apparently :D Improvement should be within the first 3 months :D

Hi Helen
My IBS was diagnosed by my Doctor. After putting up with the pain & and horrible symptoms I went to the Doctor for help. Straight away he said it sounded like IBS. I did end up having a test, but only to rule out the possibility of bowel cancer (there is bowel cancer in my family).
Maybe you could try another Doctor? Now that IBS has had a bit more publicity (for lack of better word), you may find the cause of your tummy trouble. :)

Any good Gastro-enterologist should be able to find out what and where the problem is :D The gut is a very long intestine and problems can occur anywhere from your mouth right through to your back passage ;( If you have continuing episodes it would be worth being reffered to a specialist :D My IBD would flare up every 2-3 months until I finally got reffered to a Gastro-enterologist who did a colonoscopy and endoscopy :( These tests are not painful but you just feel weird with somebody inspecting your innards and looking in places where the Sun don't shine :faint: Women are probably more used to these types of tests particularly if you've ever had a baby or a Pap smear :D

Thanks Iam getting some aloa vera juice this week to try will let you know how it goes. :)
IBS -what a hassle & annoying condition. If you like/love garlic or if you hate it,
try to eat garlic in foods.Evening meal & add 1-2 (3-4 is best) crushed, diced,
sliced however you want-fresh garlic pods to your meal while cooking. It works
great.Just 2-3 meals a week is enough to notice a difference.

Hi Marilyn
I suffered terribly for years with something like IBS (never went to the doc!) but I couldn't eat dairy, rich products, tomatoey stuff, chocolate!!!!! and at one stage it got so bad even if I had a dry bikkie I would be on the loo and I lost 2 kilos was starving and I started taking some nutritional products and within half an hour of taking one lot of tablets the diorreah stopped, I have not had the terrible pains and I can eat anything now but yoghurt (which I love). I also drink Aloe Juice and swear by it along with the tablets I found. If for any reason I don't take the tablets within a couple of days I know about it. They are gold! Email me if you like: lynetted@aapt.net.au
Cheers

I agree with Mindy, I was diagnosed late last year ( You're right its terrible) another one I sometimes use is called IBS Support from the Chemist. But the main cure is change in diet and less stress. Any suggestions on stress relief !
I do Yoga (Sometimes) and go for long walks.

I was told many years ago that I had IBS but my problems continued with my condition becoming really bad that earlier this year I started throwing up as well and was exhausted all the time.
After lots of tests, colonoscopy and endoscopy my specialist has identified that I do not absorb Vitamin B12 through the natural process. I have been tested for all the standard diseases that cause a person not to absorb Vitamin B12 but I do not have any of those diseases. He said I'm a rarity and in all of his 40 years of specialisation there has only been a handful of people he's not been able to diagnose.
I now have to have Vitamin B12 injections, initially I had to have 10 shots within 2 months and now it's 1 shot every 2 months, for the rest of my life. I am feeling soooo much better, I have a life and I'm starting to lose weight, which previously even exercising and eating carefully was not shedding the kilos. Within two months I lost 5 kilos and my dr thinks that my body had gone into starvation mode, storing everything and that my metabolism stopped.
Why am I telling you this??? About 5 years ago I had to go and see 6 different doctors before anyone actually ran tests. The doctor I found in Melbourne identified that my Vitamin B12 levels were non-existent and gave me 6 shots. Those 6 shots I found out this year, topped me up and helped decrease my symptoms, until I ran out of supply. When I my symptoms increased, other doctors (while living in Darwin) just kept saying I had a bug, even though I had told them about my previous history.
You have to push doctors to do things because a lot of them are getting slack or just do not have the experience to diagnose things correctly. I would be asking for tests for bowel related diseases. If you want to see a great doctor, I can recommend someone in Melbourne.
Good luck :)

Hi again Marilyn. See if your doctor will perscribe NEXIUM, i have been taking this as well as IBS support, the reflux and bad indigestion are more of the bad stuff some people get. Tests wont diagnose IBS just rule out all the others, then the doctors decide its IBS
Hope you are getting the info you need

I was about 5 months pregnant with my first (who is now nearly 10) when I started showing signs of IBS. I had a colonoscopy after baby was born, and was found to have ulcerative colitis. Doctors told me I probably was always susceptible, but due to giving up smoking when trying to fall pregnant, it was brought on. Apparently smoking somehow suppresses it, and I was surprised to see an episode of House had Dr House telling a male patient to take up smoking cigarettes to curb his IBS,lol. Anyway I had it on and off for about 8 years, but for the last two years I haven't had an attack. I have also gained about 10 kilos, and wonder if putting on the extra weight has anything to do with it? Now that I am trying to lose weight again, I hope it doesn't return. Horrible condition that disrupts your life in horrible ways.....

Hi everyone
I have never been diagnosed but believe this is probably what I have suffered from for many years. I agree that it seems likely that diet has a lot to do with it. My gut (excuse the pun) feeling is that wheat provokes it and causes the bloatedness. Thise is a difficult one for me as I am slight and without the carbs in most wheat based foods I both loose too much weight or lack energy. But cutting down has helped. Also realised recently that (by cutting down substantially) coca cola was causing many problems.
Also in response to stress relief (sorry I haven't been able to work out how to include quotes, it just doesn't work for me) I swear by exercise. There are 2 types of people, those that feel good after exercise and those that it just doesn't agree with. If you are in the first type then I highly recomend exercise, the more vigourous and intense the better. I play soccer at a reasonable standard. Only got into it 4 years ago after many many years idle. Sometimes I have to drag myself reluctantly off to training as I am so tired or feeling down I just want to go to bed, but after a good workout I feel invigorated and actually think I sleep better too. It clears the cobwebs and definately believe that it has been an excellent and life saving stress reliever.
Good Luck Kerry:hug:

we can be our own support team :D
isnt it a tough one .. I have a bout atm ...
yes have tried all the natural remedies .. cant take any of the things like mintec, zantac etc. just soy yogurt, boiled rice, ginger (my all time fav for all tummy upsets - slice of ginger and a slice of lemon in hot water)
i dont think there is any 'cure' just ways of making it more bearable... mine usually comes on when I have been doing too much and get to exhausted. so for me the control is to ensure I dont overdo things.

::comfort: I empathise with you Marilyn. I have had the odd bout here and there..........makes life uncomfortable and can be really painful if you have a bad bout. The best thing I found is to keep off fatty, fried foods, takeout, little seeds, nuts n things, drink plenty of water. There are two things I have found that really helped, both are available over the counter at a chemist.
1) BUSCOPAN (lifesaver!! hee hee)
2) INNER HEALTH
Hope you are feeling better soon!!
