View Full Version : Drivers Licences

I think from some other topics there were quite a few that said they didn't have a drivers licence.
I don't have mine. No real excuse other than I haven't got around to it LOL. I went and got my L's on my 16th Birthday. Have had lessons here and there over the years (also had my own car I drove for a short time shhh) So it's not that I can't, or do not want to. Just never gotten around to having the test.
It doesn't bother me too much not having it. Most things I need on a daily basis are within walking distance, then I have the man pet taxi LOL.
I will do it eventually, my L's run out next year for the 6th time LOL
So do you or don't you? If you do, how old were you when you got it? It seems like a lot of women that actually do have it, didn't get it till later on. My Mum was 30 something.
No, no licence for me either Leigh. I too have had my L's but only once. I did have lessons, and probably could have got my licence then, but just couldn't see the point. We only had the one car, John drove everywhere we needed to go, and I was quite happy staying home when he was working. :)
I keep getting hassled to get my licence now, but I really don't want to! Simple as that really :dk: The day may come when I feel it is necessary, but that day isn't now. ;)

When I read a few of the other topics and a few of the ladies said that they didn't have a drivers license I thought how bizzare. I just thought that most people would have the'yre license. Actually come to think of it my SIL didn't get her license until she was in her 20s and I thought that was strange. I got my lisence the year I turned 17 which I thought most people did. I remember I was a bit nervous so didn't actually go for it until the May when my birthday was in the January and remember thinking why did I wait so long :D

I got my liscence at 18, and I'm glad I did now, especially with the kids & needing to go to playgroup etc. I'm finding I also get cabin fever if I;m at home too much.

I started driving when I was 14 (ummm) and got my licence when I was 16 so I've been driving nearly 40 years :faint: When I had to have several back ops in later years I was always glad I could still drive :D Even if I had ended up in a wheelchair I would have got hand controls installed because it's just so handy being able to drive myself where I need to go :D
I just couldn't imagine having to rely on someone else to drive me around. I'm too independent and love to be able to jump in my car at the drop of a hat if I need too.

:O I didn't get my license until I was 33! I had no self confidence in driving (or for much else for that matter :dk: ) My gorgeous Grandmother came to stay with me and said, `Right thats it you are getting your license!' Yeah rightio whatever you think Nan...then the next day we went out and she bought me a BRAND NEW Hyuandai Excel. Talk about motivation!
Nan has passed away now but I still have my little car and it is an absolute lifeline for me...especially now as we live in the bush.
I am sure that Nan could tell how unhappy I was at the time even though I had never ever mentioned it to anyone and she saw me having a car as a way towards me escaping such unhappiness. It worked...I found my independence and enough strength and confidence to remove my self and the children from such a soul destroying situation.
Now I have it all....my little car....a happy home and the love of my life! :):)

I don't have my licence and have always walked everywhere or caught buses and trains. I had my L's once when I was about 20 ( which I got pressured into) and went for 1 driving lesson.
Now that my kids are getting older and we need to get them to different sporting events etc and also now that I am working I am feeling the need to get my licence. I decided about a month ago that I would get my licence next year when my youngest starts school. I hope I am brave enough and don't chicken out (which I have done before  ).

Got my Ls when I was 16, my Ps when I was 17 - the day my Ls expired. If I'd failed that time, I never would have got my licence, too much stress (and this was in a moderately sized regional town - if it had been Sydney, NO CHANCE). This was all before the days of log books and proving how many hours you've driving as a learner, and there was just the red P plates. It's still weird to me to see the green ones and I just can't work the whole system out.

I got my learners on my 17th birthday & my licence three days after my 18th. Gee, that was 16 years ago. I only just last week renewed it again for another 10 years. At last I have got one of those snazzy new licences (I still had the old plastic one with the blue strip along the top). Mind you, the guy kept telling me to get closer to the camera and then said 'look at the dot' and before I had a chance to even smile he took the photo. I look cross-eyed LMAO & I must remember now that if I ever get pulled over, I have to go cross-eyed so I look the same as my photo :Hehe:

Got my license exactly one month after my 18th birthday and have had it ever since, i'd feel lost without the freedom!

I got mine at about 19, which was late for my group of friends.
I can't imagine not having a licence, especially with kids, but I can understand how people don't get it. At first it can be a very overwhelming & challenging experience, but it doesn't take long to build confidence & for it all to become second nature :D

I didn't get mine and I have a good reason. When I was 19 I was involved in a car accident. It wasn't a bad one and no one got seriously injured but it scared the living daylights out of me and since then I've been too scared to drive. And I'm so glad I don't because just last night there was a terrible car accident not far from where I live. Two drivers were drag racing and one innocent driver got killed. There are some really stupid drivers out there.
And with the petrol prices the way they are, I couldn't afford it anyway. So I use public transport, its cheaper and somewhat convienient.
So, this is why I don't drive but I may start to learn in my thirties. Who knows? :D
I got my lisence as soon as I was 17. Living in the country with no public transport driving is a must. I made sure I learnt in a manual as I have heard lots of stories where ppl were in an emergency situation & the only person able to drive didnt know how to change gears!! I couldnt imagine not having a lisence :faint:

I didn't get my licence until I was 28 y.o. but when I was about 20, I did teach myself to drive in my bf's car when he was at work one day. I just drove around the block about 20 times and this old guy who was gardening kept stopping and staring at me..lol We lived at Coolum Beach back then on the Sunshine Coast and I did drive for a few months without a licence, but then when I moved back to Brisbane, I stopped driving again.
I finally got my licence the year that Zac went to school and I couldn't imagine being without it now.

What a lovely story about your Nan Patricia, wonderful memories for you every time you drive :)
Even if I did have mine, I wouldn't have access to a car during the day anyway. It also comes in handy for a wonderful excuse at times LOL
I know someone who doesn't have it, and must never intend to( they are over 40). Refuses to use public transport, and relies on people to go out of their way for everything...that would shit me.

Went overseas in my early 20's for a couple of years and so didn't get my licence till 25, I then lost it for a month when I was 29, so now I am very careful and never speed :pam: , no matter how late I am, you really appreciate it once something is gone, I was so ashamed  that I took 3 weeks off work and stayed with a friend interstate, never told a sole (till now) not even my ex-husband found out.
Now I am older and wiser and try to do the right thing, but really I have lots of friends who don't have a licence or a car and really I don't mind dropping them off or picking them up, what are friends for. :)
But I would not want to be without a car or a licence, how does one do grocery shopping without a car? :dk:

There is no way I could carry all my weekly shopping!!!

I got my L's about a month after I turned 16 and my P's a month after I turned 17. I couldn't wait to get my licence and the freedom that comes with having them.
I think I'd go mad if I didn't have my licence. It's nice to be able to just jump in the car and go somewhere at the drop of a hat and not have to rely on anyone else.
