View Full Version : No idea of clothes to suit
I have a problem. I can never work out which clothes would suit me. I am constantly worried, when clothes shopping, that the things I like are "too young" for me.....or sometimes I pick out something and my daughter says it's awful, so I put it back! Usually I end up not buying anything at all. Does anyone else suffer from this?

July I love buying clothes, in fact I had another big shop today
I see you are close to my age, I don't feel we have to buy Nana clothes at this age in fact I would be horrified to dress like my mum and how old is your daughter,my youngest is 18 and she never liked what I picked but my other daughter who is 27 did, so I took no notice of the younger one as she could only see through teenage eyes
I have a favourite shop that I never go past (unfortunately):headh: very expensive but the clothes last me years so I am saving that way, and the ladies are a real help they are honest to. why not take a good honest friend who you can trust to tell you how the clothes look.
I used to love that program on TV how not to dress
Thanks Di Nana. No way do I want to wear Nanna clothes either! Cringe. :hehe: Last time I shopped with them, my daughter's were 21 and 24.
I think it's been sooo long since I regularly shopped just for me, that I have forgotten how to do it! We have never had a lot of money so for many years any shopping was done for the kids and I just made do with hand me downs. Now they are grown up and I only have the one littlie, I find I can afford to clothes shop (still on a budget though) for myself occasionally - but don't know what to choose when I get there!:headh:
Is the show you are talking about called "What not to Wear"? Maybe I should take a look at it. I really have to do something!

Yes that's the program :hehe: It was good showed you what clothes suited your shape, wish I could come shopping with you I would love to help, clothes are my passion, sad really as we live in a little country village and everyone seems to get round in track pants, so I look a bit of a twit but I don't give a toss, your daughters should be able to help next time they say no yuk don't buy that tell them to find you something then don't go home empty handed

Hi July. You know, if your girls are telling you yuk, it would probably look good on you, cause it doesn't fit into their classification of looking good! I think there is nothing worse than mutton dressed up as lamb, and even at my age there are a lot of women that feel they have to dress 'young' to look good.
Just stick to your classic lines, and throw in a couple of fashionable items. For instance get yourself a good pair of jeans and pants that you feel comfortable in, and for this winter grab a longer cardigan or jacket for over the top.
Most of my wardobe are classical items (items that don't date) and then I go to the cheaper shops, like Crossroads, Target etc, and get a couple of items that are in fashion, and away you go...Just make sure that all your items mix and match, and that way you have more than one outfit....:)

Well I just love to shop too, I often shop at Suzanne Grae ,or I go to the Myer sales and get their expensive better brands of clothing sooo much cheaper. You can always ask a salesgirl for help. I don't, but thats because I am compulsive and buy whatever. Nine times out of ten it matches something I have at home.LMAO
Sometimes I think I am Mutton dressed as lamb, because I think and feel a lot younger. I love the fashions of today, and do not want to dress like my grandma did, or my Mother for that.:D
My suggestion is to just go with how you want to dress.

I too have trouble buying clothes for me. They are usually to big, I have trouble fitting into a womans size 8 and if by chance they do fit they are just that fraction to tight. I some times shop in the kids department just so I can get something to fit. Then I find they are a bit short in the crutch, so by this stage I'm getting really peeved, so I give up and go home.
I think a big part of my problem with buying clothes.....is that I quickly lose patience in the dressing room. Quite often I've gone in there with a few items, but if the first one doesn't fit, or looks crap, I don't even bother with the rest of them. Plus I also have the problem of not being quite sure if the item suits me or not.
You should have seen me when it came to shopping for my wedding dress :headh: I had a certain idea of what I wanted (and did not want), but just kept putting it off. Finally one of my friends insisted that we go looking - and trying on if I felt like it. After the first shop & the first couple of dresses I wanted to give up. Luckily for me she insisted that we try a few other shops. Luckily for me I listened to her.:shh:
After approx. 3 hours and 5 shops, I found the dress that made me cry:hehe: And it fitted into the "do not want a wedding dress that....."
Thanks ladies. I feel better having "talked" about it to you and I think you all have given me some very good advice to bear in mind next time I'm clothes shopping. You are all :winner:

Here's the website of the BBC show 'What Not To Wear'.
There is a section on there, where you put in your basic body shape and they give you tips on what to wear.

I used to love to clothes shopping when I was younger and had a nice figure but lately I hate it. I now have small shoulders and hips but a thick waist and it makes it really hard to shop for clothes.

Brissy....I remember that and I tried to find it on the net so that I could post it here, but couldn't....clever you.
I just had a quick look at the link for What Not To Wear. It looks good. I did a profile for a menopausal woman....Apparently there's no benefit to looking like a dish rag! LMAO I'm not that bad! LMAO
I noticed there are some other articles on there too, the one on confidence sounds like it will be interesting. I'll have to go back and read through properly later on. Thanks for the link. :)
