Yes Jen the harnesses work really well..I have even used them when taking my goat (the dear departed SPIRIT) to the vet.

The harness just clicks in where a normal seatbelt would.

Jen, they are great and work really well. Both my dogs (golden retrievers) wear them when they are in the car. It restricts them from moving too much but they are still able to sit or lay down.

They are not expensive and definitely worth getting

I would never put a dog in the car without one.

I so agree....I don't have a harness for Rosie, but I do have a short lead where one end clips onto her collar and the other clips into the seat belt.
The reason for harnesses or the like for dogs is that in the event of an accident they can be a lethal missile if unrestrained...no matter what size. Also, the pet is contained and cannot wander off in shock or injured, and run the risk of being run over.
Note to all pet lovers....restrain your Babies in cars.

Are the harness' necessary? I think if your Lucy can sit still in the car you don't need one but if she jumps around I guess you could. My 2 cockers ride great in the car so I don't use them and they have rode plenty of times for even up to 4 hours when I would be driving to visit family, so I've never used them.

Not only that it will also help save their life if you are in an accident. You wouldn't put a baby in a car without a seatbelt, so why wouldn't you do it for a dog (or any pet for that matter)? And, considering they are only about $15 to buy, why wouldn't you get one?

Probably gone a bit off topic here but I feel very strongly about it and believe that they are very necessary.

I think it is very wise to get a harness. When I take my mum's poodle to the vet I use it every time. Stops the dog from jumping over onto my knee.

both my boys wear harnesses, Beau's was purchased I think from Kmart, Diesel's I got off ebay coz I couldnt find any large ones in Kmart. Both were inexpensive (less than $20) and are easy to use. I have the ones that have a ring for the lead when walking and also a loop of seatbelt material that you put the seat belt through then click into the thingie in the car. I like this kind as it restricts their movement but also gives them the room to move around a little bit too. I think its important to give them some freedom to make mistakes so they can learn how to behave. Of course in a car, you can allow to much freedom but a little bit is good.
