Have you ever tried to catch/help a stray dog?

We had one in our street on Saturday. I stopped the car and tried to call it over - it stopped, looked at me and just took off. I tried to find it again but couldn't. Then about 2 hours later hubby and I were coming back from looking at the concrete and I saw it again (about 1.2km away from our street). We stopped the car again but there was no way the poor little thing was going to come anywhere near us :(.

Well, when I went for a drive today to see if the bricklayer was at the house, I saw it again about 3 houses up in our new street (which is about 3kms from where I first saw it on Saturday).

I actually had dog biscuits in the car and tried to throw some on the ground for it but it took off again in the paddock. It seems so frightened and dirty. I just wanted to take it home and give it a nice warm bath and a good feed. I didn't know what else to do other than ring the ranger at the council and report it. I really hope they are able to catch it and that it is okay.

really Barbara, as hard as it may sound....it is the best to report it.
When those poor mites are lost and scared, it is very hard to catch them. At least the rangers have the know how and equipment.
Hopefully the owners will be found and the dog will go back home.

good on you Barb i know it's awful to see a dog that is obviously lost & scared
if you can't catch it the best thing is to call the ranger which you have done so lets hope they have found it

Barbara, maybe if you keep throwing food to him he might become friendlier I know that works with cats. And then you probably could catch him and bath him and maybe keep him.

Barbara I'd be inclined to call the RSPCA inspector. He/she could be hurt, malnourished or abused previously and that could be why it's not approaching you.

Poor little mite I get really upset when I see things like that, I hope he gets the kindness he deserves.

Aww poor little thing, you did the right thing, I hope that it is found safe and unharmed. I hope that it is just lost and not abused by it's owners.

we had two strays in one week about two months ago. my DF called the police and they took it. not sure if the first one had a collar or not, but it came right up to my DF. my dog lucky used to run away from home. we once found him 4 blocks away and this couple thought it was their dog. i was so mad i had to show them his collar. but usually he would go right down the block and into the bakery. i always knew to find him there!

Aww It makes me sad just thinking about it. I got both of my cockers from the Cocker Rescue organization and they had both been previously picked up as strays. To think about it makes me sad because I wish I knew what kind of life that had before this one. But, I guess I can just hope that the stray you saw gets picked up and ends up in a lucky home like my 2 wonderful pups have.
