Well my friend and I went to see the stage play Dirty Dancing yesterday at the Lyric Theatre here in Brisbane and to be honest I was really disappointed in it. To start with the price of the tickets was nearly $100 each, which was a lot more expensive than Saturday Night Fever (which was a fantastic show) and then our seats were pretty crappy. We were in the top balcony and it's just too high to be able to see the show properly and you end up missing some of it.
They've crammed so many seats in that you can't even see the stage without having someone's head in your way so you have to look either side of their head to be able to see. Half the time I had my head that close to the guy next to me that I think he thought I was going to try and smooch him or something...lol (he was pretty yummy though..lol).
The sets were fairly amatuerish and I think the actors over-acted a bit but on the whole it was ok I suppose. The first half was really slow to get going but the second half was much better. I'm thinking now that I would have been buying the DVD and the soundtrack.

Grrr. How disappointing - what a shame because done well, it could be really good as a stage production. What have the reviews been like? (Although I imagine reviewers get the best seats in the house!)

I haven't read any of the reviews yet, but it would be interesting to see what they have to say about it.
There were people in the audience who got right into it like cheering everytime a well known quote was said like...'Nobody puts Baby in the corner' and things like that. Probably the best part of the show was when the sister did her act in the talent show...that brought down the house. :jump:

"I feel pretty, Daddy" LMAO
Did it follow closely to the movie?
"I carried a watermelon" would be my favourite DD quote.

That's really disappointing when you are looking forward to something and it doesn't live up to your expectations. I often think when I see the price of concert or show tickets how much cheaper the cd/dvd would be but then you don't have the memories of the experience, so not good when the whole thing is a bit of a bummer!

Oh yeah...it was exactly like the movie and have to say I love that quote too...
There were some funny parts in the show....like when Johnny stood up half naked and one girl in the crowd gave him a wolf whistle and the entire place erupted in laughter...lol

I actually saw a recent picture of Patrick Swayze - I never really thought much of him although I did like the movie. Hasn't he bought out another song or something?
We went to a show years ago (Grease) and it was a huge let down - sort of put us off going to another show.
Are you glad you went though?

Yeah, I am glad I went cause I was really wanting to go and it was still a good day out.

I saw the production for The Lion King and LOVED it. I also recently saw The Producers, which I wasn't keen on going to but I really enjoyed it - so now I want to see the movie to see how that compares.

I'm really kicking myself now that I didn't take Zac to see The Lion King when we were in Sydney. I think that would have been a great show to see and would have appealed to Zac's age group.

Oh I so want to see the Lion King. My sister saw it here in Melb for her birthday and she has told me all about it. It is definitely something my boys want to see as well. I think it is here in Melb until May so we are going to get tickets. Cannot wait :jump:

Hi, I would love to see a play of some kind, especially a musical of some sort, and even if I have to try and see through a crowd of people! The only thing like that that I've been to was when I was a little kid Mum took me to see Sesame Street on Parade in Sydney and we travelled up on the bus. I can only remember bits of it. Ever since I saw the movie Pretty Woman where Richard Gere took Julia Roberts to the opera, I've wanted to go and see a show. Jewly, Dirty Dancing is my one of my favourite movies and I love Patrick Swayze!
I always copy what they say when I watch the movie, and yes, I love the "Nobody Puts Baby In The Corner" quote too. I also love "Fight harder huh? I don't see you fightin so hard Baby, I don't see you running up to Daddy tellin him I'm your guy" Then afterwards, "I don't think, that you ever had any intention of tellin him......ever!" LOL! I also love how they mime the words to that song "Lover Boy" in the dance studio and also love where they balance on the fallen tree trunk and dance on it. Hey, now I feel like watching the movie! LOL! From Contiki.:D

I think going to see theatre is wonderful - after living in London for a few years and having the pick of the bunch I can certainly say you can really tell the worth of an actor once they are on stage. And it is so great for children to see it particularly the musicals - I loved going to see them as a child.
Hi.
I saw Dirty Dancing at the Lyric Theatre in Brisbane too. I liked it. I grew up in the 80's (born 74) and DD was my favourite movie.
I think the price of these plays are getting too expensive though. The Boy From Oz is a perfect example. It's ludicris really. I was looking forward to seeing it and now I can't because it's way out of my price range.
