View Full Version : Buy Vs Borrow

I have only just gotten back into reading, and have already spent a small fortune

Our local library is crappy, and if I'm honest with myself I would never remember to return the books anyway LOL

I have been going through 2-3 books a week, but only that's all I can managed to hide buying a week LMAO. Perhaps I need to read some crappy books to slow me down. I have been buying some on ebay, but that doesn't save you all that much these days.

Do you buy, or borrow..or a bit of both the books you read? Do you sell your books after you have read them?

I tend to buy mostly and have a small fortune sitting on my shelves at home here. :hehe: I don't sell them (never occurred to me to do it), but just leave them places with a book crossing tag in them and let someone else read them for free....call it my major charitable act of the year. :D I do have a lot in permanent collection though that I will never sell or release for Bookcrossing.

Go to Angus & Robertson Leigh, they have a five for $20 sale going (I think it's still going). Depending on your tastes you might pick up a few cheap reads.

I tend to buy books and share them with my family and friends (I think I am up to about 17 people have read my copy of the Kite Runner).

I get emails from Borders and Dymocks etc and wait till they have sales or they give you vouchers to spend in there shops etc (last one I got two weeks ago from Borders for 25% off any full price book).

When I was on my Contiki tour last year, most of the girls were reading books and we all exchanged the book we were reading, I took a book by Marian Keys and ended up with a copy of the book called "The Devil Wears Prada" based on the movie, which I still have if anyone wants to read it.

Anything by Anita Shrieve I keep.

I am a really bad library patron, I always end up being overdue taking the books back in spite of my best intentions so I spend waaaay to much buying books. I was trying to buy on ebay to save money but the postage is a killer and I wasn't saving any money in the end.

I get the Borders email specials too, or just buy their 3-for-2 books. Also, K-Mart etc are very cheap if they happen to have what you're after.

I have so many books Leigh, if we have any of the same preferences in books, I have many I can pass on ...

I do both..I am on a first name basis with all the girls at our libraries ..yes I go to two LMAO

I sometimes buy at Target..their books are *always* 35% off recommended price :D

Have a look there Leigh ...they usually have a good range too :)

Have just returned from the local library.... Actually, going to the library is really new for me. I always bought or borrowed from friends, but since moving, the supply has dried up and the cost is so exhorbitant I've resorted to the library. It's small and not at all well stocked or well organised, but it's better than nothing. I'm into easy reading at the moment anyway as the only time I read is at night, and I seem to need lots more sleep these days - so I try to borrow books I can finish in one or two nights.

Do they have any used bookstores near you? I always buy my books, either in a regular book store, on ebay or at used bookstores, garage sales, etc. Used bookstores have very reasonable prices and almost always have such an awesome atmosphere. The one I go to is STUFFED with books, from floor to cieling, little piles of books all over the place. It's so awesome.

Anyway I NEVER borrow books because I hate giving them back. Even if the book was awful I'll stick it on my bookshelf and be proud of it lol.

well Leigh lol like with TV i don't read either ( i am a nanna you know LMAO ) i was going to suggest you follow Stormy around because she is always leaving books in parks & places like that but apart from Kay, what about second hand book stores or even put a little add in the paper ( i am serious) just asking for swaps & say what type of books you like to read. i think i have a good idea here Leigh

I get books from where ever I can book sales, second hand book shops, trash and treasure markets, op shops, when I,m working I find it hard to get to the library though I have a library card, we have a library van that visits where I live but it is on one of the days that I work. I can,t afford to pay full price for my books as am a quick reader and get through them too qiuckly. I love reading and would be lost without my books.

You could always have a book swap on the forum & ppl can list books they have to swap & you can get 1 at a time but only if you offer some up to swap perhaps?

Leigh

We had talked about doing a swap thing awhile ago, there was a bit of interest..but not much.

I posted on my blog about a new service I came across...LibraryThings (http://www.crazymeezer.com.au/2007/10/librarything/) could be handy if people were interested in swapping. I'd also love to see what everyone else is reading and enjoying.

I think I'm like you mint car, I think I just want to collect a whole bunch of them..even if they suck.

I used to buy books, read then give to a GF to leave at her place of work (Palliative Care)....can't afford to do that so much so I tend to borrow from my GF's....most of them have similar tastes to me in a lot of subjects.

Well, I tend to read mysteries, modern novels (chick lit ), political biographies, and picture books :hehe:

At the moment I am having a bit of a Jodi Picoult spree and I have to say, I don't get what all the fuss is about. The twists at the end tend to be so unbelievable that it ruins the whole of the rest of the book for me.

I'm willing to pass books on (makes more room for new books :P)

I remember you mentioning her a few times, and had been meaning to ask what they were about. I'd seen them there and been tempted a few times...I won't bother now LOL

At the moment I have been reading a lot of mis (misery) lit . Horrible stories of abuse, but the over all story of over coming anything are so amazing and very uplifting.

We don't really have any local book stores let a lone used ones. I don't mind new used ones, but not old used ones. Yes, I'm weird, but they smell a bit, and I don't know where they have been to be taking them to bed with me LMAO

Big W is good, I have gotten a few from there that have been cheaper than anywhere else, but they don't always have what I'm after.

I don't buy books very often but when I do its usually from Big W...the other day I bought Peter Watt's new book "The Stone Dragon" and haven't started it yet...have a pile of library books to get through. I borrow more than buy but borrowing sometimes suck as other people are waiting for the books you are reading and you only have two-three weeks to read them.

I love Jodi Picoult too.

I would love to start up a book swapping thing. I too go through about 3 books a week and it drives my beloved CRAZY cause I'm always running into Big W or the local bookstore to buy a book. I used to go to the library but a few months ago I lost $180 worth of books at a bus stop (got on the bus without them and when I got back they were gone :headh:) so I can't borrow untill I pay it all back, am paying $20 a week untill it's paid off.
PM me if anyone wants to swap a book.
I read almost anything except for Mills and Boon and have a great range from Jodi Picoult, Johnathon Kellerman, Faye Kellerman, Val Mcdermitt and alot of murder mysteries and true crime.

I mostly go to the library atm, I have a massive list of books I want to read, I just have to try and find them *sigh* I buy off ebay a bit but the postage can be a killer. Im a member of doubleday book club thing and get good books through them too. Big w are kinda cheap and so is the warehouse, they have some Jodi Picoult books, which Im in love with atm, I have 5 of her books and a friend of mine has a heap which Ill be eventually borrowing off her to read. I read too much, I can read a book in a day when Ty's at day care. Ive been staying up till midnight reading lately which I should stop :hehe:

I read pretty much anything atm, reviews off friend etc

Naomi, I can't believe you don't love Jodi Piccoult, I think she is a fantasitc writer, I have just finished Nineteen Minutes, I have every single one of her books, I think the best is My Sisters Keeper.

Naomi

It's not that I don't like her writing, I find her easy to read and I want to keep reading but then she puts a twist in at the end that just stretches credibility a bit far (even for a fiction book). I've just read The Pact which I quite enjoyed even though I found the verdict at the end a bit unbelievable - but I guess we read books to live in a fantasy world for a while don't we? I've been watching to much L&O without happy endings, I'm not used to it :hehe:

I like that she takes moral dilemmas and tried to make us see both sides of the story, when often we really only think about the 'right' side, if that makes sense. I also quite liked the one about the Amish girl ... and the one about the woman who did search and rescue (whose father was on trial for her abduction).

So yeah, I really like reading them but a few times I'd get to the end and be irritated by the ending.

I used to be a big reader and used to read a few books a week - have got a little collection that I will probably never read again. I've tried to get back into reading but it has just never really happened LOL - I still read, but something that used to take 2 days, now takes me 2 months .

I haven't bought a book in ages though - probably the last 10 books I've got have been given to me as presents. I've been reading a lot of spiritual books lately (borrowed from the library) - they are great . But I do love reading a good crime and/or drama novel :)

well i used to borrow all the time but then a few people were selling heaps of books online so now i have a hole shelf filled with books that i bought so i guess if someone is selling a book i want i will buy it but i wont borrow books from the library until i have read all my books 1st and at the moment i have like 50 to read lol! i read my books once and then sell them unless its a book that craig might read when hes older then i keep it on his bookshelf.

my DF made me a bookcase, which is fantastic-i store all my books in there-mostly my stephen kings! when we had our garage sale, the lady that lives downstairs was throwing out all her books..of course, i took all the boxes from the curb and brought them upstairs. i only read two of them i think! there's at least 50 in that box, still in the hallway. my DF's mom bought me a gift card from barnes and nobles-a bookstore. perfect gift for me! i ended up buying les miserables by victor hugo. i LOVED the broadway play and i bought the movie through the net a few weeks ago..so i had to buy the book. and i also bought the taking by dean koontz. his books are pretty good. i rarely ever went to the library, most of the time i bought my books. i'm the same way with buying horrible books, but still keeping them and being proud! i swap with my sister on occasion and i did with a couple friends..of course only the ones that i know will treat my books with care and actually will give them back! (one time my friend bent the pages back so far that the binding was all wrinkly and stuff. i was pretty upset! but i treasure my books and don't open the book all the way, because i don't want that to happen again!)

I went to A&R today, and was going through the $20 bins...there was a fairly new release in there that I was sure shouldnt have been...but grabbed it anyway. She didn't even check the books, I just said i'd gotten them out of the $20 and she said ok.

So I got a $35 new release and 2 others for $20...bargain!
