I look forward to reading the paper in January every year when they report on the most popular names for the previous year. In England this year, for example, it looks like "Mohammed" is going to be a clear winner for the most popular name. Just goes to show how their culture is changing from strictly empirical hey?

Anyhoo, back to the topic... they also report on the weirdest names. Moonbeam is one that has stuck with me over the years, and I often wonder what has happened to that child - what experiences has s/he had in school, in the community at large and so forth.

Twins named Flora and Fauna is another example of babies names that get me wondering about the motives of the parents. I also heard of twins called Benson and Hedges but I'm not sure if that's real or an urban myth.

Sydney (middle name Harbour) Bridge is another "strange" thing to call a child. Major Tom is yet another.

Apart from Epony-Rae (aka Kylie Minogue in "Cath and Kim"), what "different" names have you come across?

Anita

A little boy in our street is called Rave, I had never heard of it before.
There are some really odd names out there (and some cruel parents)

umm not sure, my daughter Jalise is the most different name of someone i know. If i google her first and surnames she comes up as number one! (for signing a guest book a little while ago) It's unreal. Three girls I went to school with are called 'Cinnamon', 'summer' and 'sky'! Maybe not too different for some but I've never met another Cinnamon.

PJKNYFLR or something like that it was just a string of consonants, no vowels at all.....she was a Samoan lady and that was her first and last name....the pronunciation - Ponyflu.

That is single handedly the weirdest name I can remember of someone I have met. Although when I was growing up we had a few hippy kids staying in Byfield. They were named after the first thing the mother saw when she gave birth to them. The boy was the only one with a normal name - Dick....guess she was looking to see if she had a boy or a girl. :dk:

My grandad's sisters were named after flowers - Daisy and Ivy but I think that might have been a reasonably normal convention in that day because I have met a lot of flower named people in their late 80s and 90s at work :) Daisy, Ivy, Petunia, Rose, Flora etc.

A strange one for me was Rhill, pronounced "real" I thought that was kinda odd.. That is the only one I can think of now, it seems that a lot of names I would have thought were strange 10 years ago are normal now!

i cant think of any strange names of people ive met but the main guy in 'my name is earl' is "PILOT INSPEKTOR".
Other than that all i can think of is if my friend Jessica (whom we call jesse) marries her current Mr. right she will be Jesse James.

LMAO Either that or the father of the baby was in the water birthing pool with them? ;-)

Possibly....I really didn't want to know. :hehe: I was about 10yo when I met them and I asked the girls why they had unusual names - one was a type of fruit and the other was a type of wood - and the brother had a normal one. The oldest girl just shrugged her shoulders and explained the naming convention.

It wasn't until I was a little bit older that it dawned on me what the boy was named after. :hehe:

I knew a kid named Rope. When my parents named me they didn't think Joni would be a common name but there were two other Joni's in my class. So all through school I was Joni K. :) I knew a woman who named her three daughters after bands, she had Journey, Santana and Tesla.
