View Full Version : Pets as a child
I grew up surrounded by animals living on a dairy farm :) I had silky bantums, a brown and white rabbit named Bugsy, numerous farm cats and a dog named Bingo (well, I was 8 ok) We had working dogs, a border collie Rex, 2 kelpies Rex (the 2nd) and Laddie. Oh and 2 ducks, Quick and Quack LOL
What pets did you have?
I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find some photos to share

Oh how nice to have grown up on a farm with all those animals Pam! You were very lucky :)
I had a variety of pets although I did not always look after them... I had 2 mexican walking fish, variety of exotic fish, yabbies, a feral kitten, a lace monitor (lizard), carpet python, cockateils, budgies and peach faces. We also rescued some sugar gliders at some stage too but decided we better put them back in the wild (my family were very strange people)... :P

We always had a cat. We had a dog when I was older (border collie, love them!). We did keep chickens from time to time but I wouldn't really consider them pets (we used to eat them). (sorry).

My grandmother with whom I lived bred poms and bulldogs (not at the same time) and when I was five we had a cocker spaniel as a pet. My grandfather had an old black cat called Bing and later we had a few other cats - don't think we named them. LOL
Naomi, we had chooks too.. sadly we ate ours too :( It always scrared the hell out of me when they ran around head leadless!
Monty, you seemed to pick the non furry kind LOL
Floria ..you played with Toads? :eww:
Rosanne most of our farm cats were nameless ..well, they all had the same name Puss puss LOL
Opps I forgot to add Charlie my green Budgie :) He was a fantastic talker!

My Dad HATED cats with a passion, so I didn't have any as a kid :(
I got a Cocker Spaniel dog for my first birthday. I had him till I was about 12. We got a bitch a few years after him. When he died, she fretted for him, so we gave her to friends with other dogs ( I had to ring Mum to ask what happened to her, I couldn't remember her dying LOL)
I had a few bunnies, I remember one got myxymatosis and it's eyes fell out :O He was still alive :( I remeber hearing him screaming, and Mum and Dad arguing over who was going to drown him ;( .
We didn't have any other pets, until I got my horse when I was about 13.

As a child I lived on a farm so we had the usual animals chooks, ducks, geese, cats, dogs, budgies, horses, cows, sheep [one pet lamb that grew up to be a stupid sheep!], goat, and we also had a pet wallaby which we had to give away when it grew too big for us to handle.

Alex that sounds dreadful about your bunny that got the disease... very sad ;(
I grew up with my relatives and some of them really hated cats, although my aunty had a few but they always got ran over down at the highway. :( Also my sister was very irresponsible when it came to cats and they always had huge litters and my nana killed them, she didn't like to and she was very distressed about it and that is why to this day she is not very fond of cats.
Scarlett - Yes I grew up with strange relatives who liked reptiles and other strange, wild animals. I only started to love the cute and cuddley kind in the last couple of years...

I would love to work with animals or animal products although I don't think I'm cut out to be a vet.. Would have to go back to uni and actually put some hard yards in LOL. Cheyenne you can be our local animal doctor on the forum ;)

WOW, everyone had a variety of animals :)
From the age of 2, I always had at least 1 dog and 1 cat... up until I moved out of home and went for about 12 months without a cat. While growing up we probably had 3-4 litters of kittens and 1 litter of pups (just soooo cute). We always found good homes for our kittens and pups.
Our first dog was a Lab, and he lurved me... we lived in country NSW and it was times when dogs could wander the streets... he would find the last kid walking to school and follow them (he couldn't remember how to get there by himself - lol). Once he was at school, he would go into every single classroom until he found me and then would sit beside me LMAO - the teacher was constantly ringing my mum to come and get him because he'd create havoc in the classroom :)

We had Ebeneezer (aka Super Dog), a cocker spaniel, since I 2 to when I was about 15 or 16. We had a couple of cats - one that had a death wish, called Magnificat - a chook called Wonder Chook, and a few other chooks. Then there was Nina and Georgie, 2 dogs that came one after the other, now my parents have 2 puppies called Gina & Norgie.

The oldest pet i remember was my mum's dog Kydie...i don't remember what sort of dog it was but i remember my sister cut her poor ear off with a pair of scissors! Then we had a german shephard (cross something i don't remember what though) named Timmy and my first pet was a Ginnie Pig which i never had a chance to even name or play with it cuz about an hour after i got it a cat ran past its cage (cat from next door) and it was so scarred it froze and died! ;(
Then i got a budgie and i called him Brett.....but then a year later realised it was a girl budgie but needed to keep Brett cuz i was teaching her her name so i changed it to Brett-Tina!! LOL I dunno where i got that from! But sadly a year after that we went away for a family holiday for a month so we left our neighbour in charge of feeding the pets but he got lazy, threw dogfood over the fence for the dogs and that was it so i found my poor Brett-Tina with no food or water hanging upside down in his cage stiff! ;( It was horrible

Oh Michelle, that's terrible about Brett-Tina :( I would have been distraught and very, very angry at the neighbour :(
Oh Michelle, how heatbreaking. I'd have been furious with that neighbour!
