With the dreadful number of drownings happening Laurie Lawrance has set up 5 free online lessons for parents to teach children.

You can find the lessons on the Kids Alive (http://www.kidsalive.com.au) site.

Its a video stream so a B/band connection is best.

I think that with the onset of summer its something all parents/caregivers of younger children should have a look at! Its aimed at the 0-5 age group but even if your child is close to that age its worth a look!

Also on 9am the other day they had a woman on who was discussing child drownings and she pointed out a few things to remember. So i thought I'd share them here
.
* It only takes a few centremetres of water for a child to drown.
* It takes only a couple of minutes for a child to drown
* Drowning in most cases is SILENT, you may not hear a struggle.
* Too many people think "it wont happen to me (my children)"

Stay happy and safe in the water!

Appartently, you & I are not from the same area, Manda. Pardon my ignorance, but where is Bridie Island? Anyhow, I don't know about the drownings you are referring to, but I know it is an issue that all parents should learn more about. Thank you for sharing the site & information. I plan on checking the site & information out.

Bribie Island is off the coast of south-east Queensland Cassandra.....LOOOONG way from Kansas :D

Childhood drownings are a major problem in Australia unfortunately for many reasons :(

That is sad. It's a problem in the US as well, but it's not a major one. However, it is an area we need to work on as well, especially during the summer months when everyone wants to go swimming.

Casandra- Bribie island is in australia. But statistics show that drownings are up worldwide.

This past fortnight has been particularly bad here in australia, we have had 11 children
drown. Thats 11 in 2 weeks! Very very sad.

I wanted to get one of those ones with the filter, they were on special for $99 at Target last week, but I can't afford a fance so would not consider it. Becides it's illegal to not have a fence (in Melb too? Not sure but it is in QLD)

This is a great site though, DD1 can swim but the others can't. We can't even get a toddler pool this year because we can't refill it everyday due to water restrictions. (and leaving water in is out of the question) So this summer will be spent at a public pool and the beach again. I like one of the public pools here, it has a cafeteria, gym, wave pool, swim lessons, toddlers heater pool (which I spend most time in!) :hehe: a huge outdoor pool and a small pool with a tunnel and mini water-fall for kids to swim through. Heaps of fun.
