I went to Bunning tonight to pick something up for my mum and while we were there my DP told me he was going to set up a herb garden for me as I love fresh herbs and had always wanted to grow my own..
I already have a huge garden full of mint which I love and as of tonight I also have parsley, chives, basil, coriander and even a little chilli plant :)
I have never really done much gardening before.. Does anyone have any tips on successfully maintaining a herb garden?

Water it. (Cheeky Kekka! :hehe:)
When repotting/replanting herbs, playing around with the soil....wear gloves and a mask over your nose and mouth (or tell hubby to).
Use your produce - don't waste it. If you harvest a lot at once, share with family/friends OR chop finely and freeze in tablespoon lots in clingwrap.

I love fresh herbs from the garden. My friend has a window garden every year.

Watering it isn't as silly as it sounds Kekka! :hehe: My mint gets very little water from me but has been growing really well :)

I'm starting slowly, with cherry tomatoes. So far, so good - which is a miracle, because I always say I can kill plastic plants :hehe:
I hope your herbs do well Rachel. I love Bunnings, I worked at the Rockingham and Mandurah stores.

Rachel you need to go back and get some rosemary :P It is easy care and requires very little watering after it is established. It is one of the few herbs which I can successfully grow in my rock wall (heavy clay soil) although I've found oregano does well in heavy soil too because it has grown all down the sides of it as well. :hehe: There are a couple of herbs that you shouldn't plant next to each other though....it was on the tags of the plants when we bought them.
I don't wear gloves or a mask but I do wash my hands very carefully afterwards and I'm careful not to inhale when pouring a whole bag out into a planter.

I planted different kinds of mints. I have chocolate, peppermint, spearmint, orangemint, and lemon. They are my tea mints. The chocolate mint is wonderful in coffee.
All I would add is that you might want to make sure they are contained some way. They like to travel thru a yard.
My front yard smells great when we mow.lol

Stormy I don't know why I didn't end up getting the rosemary- I know I was holding some while I was at Bunning, I will get some for sure as well as some oregano I think.. oh and some chocolate mint if I can find some, that sounds good!

Trust me Rach it's the most easy care of the lot....or should I say tolerates high abuse levels from lack of watering :hehe:

LMAO sounds good to me.. I am a fairly abusive gardener lol If it doesn't cry, bark or meow I tend to forget it is there!
-I just try to be careful with water consumption, if anything can live off my dishwashing water it is my friend!

Rachael, I have a book somewhere by Rosemary Hemphill about herbs. It was the nicest book I ever found about herbs. had lots of information, and was very well illustrated. Would make a lovely gift to the Herb enthusiast.:D
