I just put Sophia down for her sleep as usual. I was keeping an eye on her as she settled because she fell off Hugo's bed this morning (I was changing Hugo right next to the bed, I thought she was safe with the sleeping rail there :crying:). Usually I just put her down and leave her to settle on her own but because I was watching her today, I noticed she repeatedly bangs her head on the mattress as she settles :O Is this normal? She also pulls her hair when she's winding down/breast feeding. I'm assuming she wouldn't do it if it hurt, but it does seem kind of strange.

It is perfectly normal Naomi, there are a lot of head bangers out there, My husbands son did it as a baby but not on a mattress he used to bang his head constantly on the wall,
as for the hair pulling both my girls did that (and I don't mean to each other) Briar did it to, my youngest daughter used to bite herself

It sounds like this comforts her Naomi, most kids wil do something that settles and winds them down. My DD has a 'blankie' which she pulls through her hands and throws around. I wouldn't worry about this at all, it sounds like Sophia is completely normal.

I was going to suggest a comfort thing too....especially if that the only time she does it.

I know the hair pulling hting is incredibly common, and lots of kids head bang. My youngest has 'bucked' when put to bed for so long that I can't remember when she started it. It's all soothing. The best part of the hair pulling is that you'll still notice her doing it in years to come when she is tired, thinking, upset, etc :)

I kind of knew the hair pulling was ok, I remembering my niece doing it (my sister mentioned yesterday she still does, and she's 3 now) but the head banging was a new one for me. Good to know it's normal. I'm glad it's only the mattress - I'd probably cry if she was hitting her head against the wall or the cot rails :( She doesn't have a dummy or any other sleep association so I guess the hair pulling and head banging is just what she does.

Jalise used to head bang the mattress too! I was worried because her fathers mother told me that when he was little he was like a psycho little kid and would head bang the wall, :hehe: thankfully Jalise grew out of it, I agree it must of just been for comfort.

it is all normal and she will give it up when she gets ready. my son is five and still sucks his thumb when he gets sleepy or rubs his head he loves to play with my hair when he gets sleepy and all three have to have the three little pig story told before bed and then mommy sings you are my sunshine to them so everyone has their own thing good luck
