An mp3 is a song in digital format.
iPod's are just one brand of the 100's of mp3 players on the market. You connect your mp3 player to your computer, download your songs on to it and off you go.
I think it would be a great present for her, I have been thinking of getting Emily a cheap one for her birthday. Prices vary a lot, from about $50 up. You can get an iPod shuffle which is a fairly basic player for around $90 which would hold around 150 songs.
I bought myself an iRiver for Xmas, it was $500 but it does mp3, video, radio, photo etc.
So do you download the songs from the net or from your existig CD's?? Is tehre anywhere on the net you can d/load songs for free still?? Hm $90 seems reasonable saw 1 in the shop today & it was $400 so I thought well there goes that idea. When I go to town next week think I will call into HN to look at them & get prices

I have a nano, it's very sexy - almost as small as the shuffle but way more flexibility (can choose song lists and orders, and has more memory). A nano is a small iPod.
You can buy MP3s (the songs) from the internet, you can also download your current CDs.
Oh, and it is illegal in Australia (and everywhere else probably) to share music files. Please don't put links here for sites that promote it. Thanks.

On some Ipods you can also download video clips.
My girls got an MP3 each for Christmas. The way I saw it when I was shopping around is MP3's are cheaper not much else different unless you go for the really expensive video ones. And it also depends on how many songs you want, they go by megabyte or gigabyte (like your computer). The girls upload their CDs to Media Player and then they can change their music when they feel like it, takes about 10 mins if that. They also have the word to songs flash on their screen so they can learn the words. They love it, I think it's a great present.

Mp3 players also allow you to download (for free) podcasts and take them with you. These are radio programs, both professional and amateur.
I listen to lots of science broadacating. The ABC in Australia, BBC in UK, deutche welle in Germany, NASA & NPR on USA, CBC in Canada all do interesting english language programs.
Just about any interest you have can be found in a podcast. The ABC(Aust) has a good beginners guide.
Not just for the kids. Great to listen to when walking etc 'Cos are not affected by vibration.

I just have a little pink creative nano mp3 player. Its so small but holds about 250 songs and its so cute. Plus much cheaper than an Ipod.

I bought my hubby the ipod for Christmas, I had them engrave it. He uses it to play poker. I would have no use for an mp3 player because I am home with my son all the time.. But I just bought the new motorola sliver and it has itunes with it.
Supa,
Does your daughter already have a cellphone, because maybe you could just upgrade hers to one that plays music as well. So she can have both in one..
Gina no way she is only 9!! She has no need for one & wont be getting one until she is a teen & has a job!!

Sorry Supa!!!!LMAO
Most the little kids here have them from the start of kindergarden. My son will get one once I send him to preschool.
I remember driving one day and these little kids were walking home from school with cell phones to their ears, I could not believe it! This was before my son. I asked a few of my friends who have kids in school, and they said yah, most all the kids have them.
They do have cellphones with only 3 buttons so you can call only 3 people. Which is what I will get for my son, because he is so little.
I know where your coming from though.
the prepaid phones are good for younger kids too. It insures you dont end up with a $400 phone bill.
Kids that young with mobiles?? Geez what do they need them that young for?

IDK...really,
Other than they can be reached by the parents, and they can call their parents should the need arise, thats why I would give my son the 3 button phone. And have our # programmed in them, and our plan has free cell to cell so if he dialed our # and left it on all day there would not be a charge.
He would have that till he is old enough for allowance and can upgrade to a pre paid.. I would never give him one like ours. that would be too dangerous.
My hubby and I go usually go out of town every 6 weeks, for 2 days and leave him with family, I think it would be nice for him to have and know he can always reach us.
I read an article about what parents these days but their kids. I think it was in Kiplinger's. How kids so young get cellphones, computers, dvd players, how most kids have a tv and dvd player in their room. Things that my generation didn't have. It said parents buy them because they have the $ to and why deprive the kids, they want them to have all that they didn't when they were younger.
I admit we have overbought for our son. His last birthday it took over an hour to open all his gifts, and I even had store about half away. It was very overwhelming. This year we are going to put "no gifts" on his invite. I know that family will still buy for him, but they can get clothes and pitch together for lessons for something. NO MORE TOYS!!!!
Sorry I got off subject... I had a pager when I was 13, but I bought it myself and paid the monthly bill. I started working at 12 1/2

Hmmmm in Oz I think it starts at high school. Haven't seen kids any younger with phones. America well Gina will have to answer that one LOL although from what I see on tv it's quite normal for kids to have phones even young ones.

Not sure what icecream has to do with ipods, but anyway...

I think you will find, from what I've seen...Apple has a price fix agreement with retailers. Their products are always they same price everywhere, and never on special. They only drop the prices of all their older products when a new model is released.

Apple does have a fixed price, I ordered my husbands from them after I did lots of shopping around. They also laser engraved the back for free.
Here is an article about kids and cellphones in the US
