Bryce Courteney :) And .. the Writer's Handbook! (Will use that for sure, for my class!) Got 6 other books out of the library and the guy said, "Sorry, you can only take 4 of one topic! :(" So, have to peruse them....and pc the pages I want to use hehe...and swap them for the others later next week! Ma's good..can she pass on shingles?
jillybeanz
19-10-2008, 01:14 AM
No I don't think so Jaide, because it only strikes the vulnerable and most of us carry it.
I think she needs to avoid people with compromised immune systems but aside from that she should be OK.

She's worried about going to my nephew's (he's 7) party tomorrow, reckon she'd be ok to go? Could they get Cpox?
Trying to reserve Three Course Murder for her online..she'd love it! :D

I think best to check with The Doc, Jaide ... or you might find some info online?
Have you read a lot of Bryce Courtenay?
jaideii
19-10-2008, 01:34 AM
hmm...hard with SIL being away, she's usually our source LOL Will check online, she thinks she's not contageous, and past that stage, but she's afraid the mum's might think she's irresponsible if she goes anyway, but really, she's fine..she says :) Except all the calamine lotion she has smothered all over herself! :P
Yep, love Bryce Courtenay...read all of them except this one, (and except Sylvia, long story why lol) which is a deviation from his normal...cos it's a lovestory :) I really love his work; he's a Master :D Have you read any?

Bryce and I do not get along, alas!
Ooh, I have not heard of her, Rani ... what kind of books does she write?
I think this is her first book ... and I was hooked. So I had to go and get the sequel - New Moon ... and again couldn't put it down:)
There's a movie coming out in November based on the first book (Twilight).

Not sure about your books but Hey, here is a subject I do know something about :jump:
Immunisations and contagious diseases, that is.
You cannot directly pass on shingles as it is a secondary infection of the chicken pox virus - ie only occurs in people who have previously had chicken pox and the virus has been dormant in their system for many years and re-activates when they are vulnerable or stressed or immuno-compromised.
However shingles is still contagious and can cause the primary infection (Varicella ie chicken pox) in people who have not had the disease or been immunised against it.
So a person with shingles needs to avoid others who have not had chicken pox or the chicken pox vaccination.
Immuno-compromised people who have had chicken pox are not at risk from anyone with shingles.
Hope this is helpful. :)

I just checked Stephanie Meyer's website (which is very good) ... so they are vampire stories. I will look out for a copy Rani, they sound intriguing. Thanks for the info! :D

I have developed a complete addiction for all things Jennifer Weiner...anyone read any of her stuff?
Just spent the weekend devouring...
In Her Shoes ( a re-read and VERY rare for me)
Good In Bed
Little Earthquakes
The Guy Not Taken
If you enjoy a good literary laugh then give them a go...fantastic!
I think I've become addicted to my book :)
I've just finished the second book from the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer called New Moon and started Eclipse and about 3/4 of the way through. I can't stop reading and I now need to find the fourth book this arvo coz I know I'll have finished Eclipse tonight.
For those who like vampire books mixed with a love story it's the best read I've had in a long time.

I can't recall if I've dipped into that title or not .. I have tried a couple of his, long ago ... he is too windy for me and I can 'hear' him writing, IYKWIM.

I LOVE books like that Rani! Have you read any fantasy?
Ooh! There's a good second hand bookstore near here ... what a happy happy thought! :D

These are the first books I've read in quite sometime - and devoured - the last book I couldn't stop reading was the Harry Potter series :)

Rani, look out for Robin Hobb - the Liveship series or the Assassin series. Or Terry Goodkind or Terry Brooks ... oh so many ... Terry Brooks got me in to fantasy - I tried Tolkien so many times (Lord of the Rings) and couldn't get into it ... now I have read that a few times too.
But look out! Once you venture down that path you might have your nose in a book forever!
I am going to the bookstore soon to look for Stephanie Meyer :D Just had to come home for a reviving cuppa!

I'm currently reading On the Road by Jack Kerouac. Classic novel from the beat generation.
I just finished One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest on the weekend. Probably one of the best novels I've ever read.

JB - I'm the same re. Bryce - just can't get into it and I know what you mean about 'hearing him write'. But, alas, people keep buying his books for me :headh:
Juxtapose, how are you finding Jack? Read that years and years ago but it wasn't my thing. Tried to get hubby to read it recently but it wasn't his thing either :hehe: Maybe I should give it a go again...
have a collection of easy read library books at the moment - nothing exciting though, but easy to get through when consatntly interrupted :hehe:

I also love the Harry Potter series ... I wonder what JK will come up with next :D
Mysterious, Juxtapose! :P What are you doing now? Nice to have you back, btw!
KB, could you suggest a couple of other authors to your gift givers? Hey did you ever try that book Miss Kiki recommended ... un .. what was it ... Aussie author started with Z. Marcus Z .... um .... He wrote The Book Thief (which I didn't like) ... oh what is his name!!!???? Darnit! The other book was excellent
Edited to Add; Woohoo! :y: Got the next three Steph Meyer books (beautfiul condition) for fiddy bucks! They're all the large editions too!
jillybeanz I warned u :D
Just finished the final book ... I loved every minute of it! I wish there was a fifth :)

21-10-2008, 06:14 PM
Rani, what have you done to me ... ??? LMAO
There must be five books ... I have Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn. There is another one listed called Host which I don't have. Yet. :D
The book I was trying to think of earlier is The Messenger by Markus Zusak. Excellent read
LMAO addictive aren't they
Host isn't actually part of the series ... Breaking Dawn is the final. Apparently there was supposed to be another called Midnight Sun which is based on Twilight but from Edward's perspective - no yet completed tho unfortunately.
I'm craving more - I may need to read them again LOL
From Cradle to Grave about a lady who killed all 9 of her kids :(

Ooh I don't think I could read that Supa! How many tissue boxes have you gone thru?
Rani I just had to check the movie site again ... to see if the actors look like the people in my head. Bella yes, but Edward, no. What did you think? (I think I have fallen in love with Edward ... LMAO )
Yeah ... movie Edward isn't what I'd imagined ... wait until you get further in the books - he's a bit hard to resist LMAO

My Books of choice this week are: Troublesome Words by Brill Bryson, Writing Better English by Ed Seick, Better Vocabulary in 30 Minutes a Day by Edie Schwager, English Grammar by Eugene Ehrlich, Cassells' Dictionary of Catchphrases by Nigel Rees, English Grammar In Use, By Raymond Murphy! :P But I'm skimming them, not reading them, do they still count? hehe
I am reading Change of Heart by Jodie Picolt. I am skimming a few pages a LOT of religion in this book?
jillybeanz
21-10-2008, 09:39 PM
I quite like Sara Paretsky but the last one of hers I bought was chockers with religious types too Jen, and it purely put me off!
I would like to read Jodi Piccoult but I can't get into her ... The Tenth Circle I tried recently but I hated her characters and I didn't CARE if they got kidnapped or murdered!!! In fact I hoped they'd croak and be done with it!! LMAO I have heard tho that some of Jodi's are better than others ... so if you can recommend a title?
I quite like Bill Bryson, Jaide. Haven't read a text tho.

it's markus zusak. :)
and i thought i mentioned i was reading the twilight series too?! DF bought me twilight for my b'day and i just got new moon two days ago and i'm already halfway done with it. they're great, aren't they?! :)
just starting a book called Hood, by Stephen Lawhead, Robin Hood of course, and i have Scarlet too.. Tuck is due out next year.. i've liked other books by this author, especially the Pendragon and Dragon King series.. there is another couple of series i might have to collect as well.. :)

I don't think I have read any of his, Zen ... can you liken him to another author?
Madamoiselle K I missed your earlier post - I have been in and out of AFW like a jackrabbit for a while, haven't had the 'net at home for a while. Haven't had a home for a while either LMAO Soon, my pretty, soon ...
Whoa nellie ... I have almost finished Twilight and while I am doing ordinary things (just shopped) all I can think about is what happens next!!! Who wants to put groceries away when Edward and Bella are waiting ... :haha:
Toodles ... my book calls! :D
i don't know who i would liken Lawhead to.. Bernard Cornwall perhaps, or Jack Whyte... take it from me tho, his books are every bit as good a read as anything Sarah Douglass, or Robin Hobb would write.. have a google.. i found a couple of good reviews, one even likened this to some of Bernard Cornwall's books.. reading one of the reviews in particular made me very glad i have Scarlet to follow..

To tell you the truth, I'm pretty bored of it already. I'm only 82 pages in but it hasn't caught me, and if a novel hasn't caught me by that point I can't see it happening at all. I dunno, it's just kind of slow paced. I was getting annoyed in the beginning because it seemed like Sal would never get to Denver.
This is the first story I've picked up about the beat generation and I thought it'd be better, with all the reviews and "omg what a classic!" it gets labelled as. Oh well.
I'll try and finish it though because I hate not finishing stories even if I don't like them!

When I moved on from high school and started university, I was so amused at how the toilet wall grafitti changed. It was no longer "Jane Doe is a sl*t!" or trashy messages; everything seemed so political, like the women who wrote it really had a message they needed to get out there. I rather enjoyed my toilet trips at uni for this reason. =)
