View Full Version : What are you reading right now #2
i am about to start the second book in Stephen Donaldson's Last Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Fatal Revenant.. like the first book in this series, it's a large meaty book! just want to finish another 'cosy' mystery first by Emily Toll, Keys to Death.. i can hear the Donaldson book calling to me while i read.. :) anyone ever read the first 2 trilogies in the Thomas Covenant series? they are now quite old, from the early '70s for the first, and early '80s for the second, but good books still, if you like fantasy...

Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult, I love her books and this has just come out in small paperback, finally. I have also just finished reading the Constant Gardener by John Le Carr, book is so much better than the movie.

I'm going through a reread of the Phryne Fisher series by Kerry Greenwood. Phryne is a glamorous over the top flapper from Melbourne in 1928.
I was desperate for a book to read the other day - had finished all my new ones - and asked my 17 year old son if he had any I could borrow. He gave me one he got for his birthday from his aunt - The Razor's Edge, by Sommerset Maugham - an oldie but a goodie. I love the way he writes (considering the book was written in the 20's)

Of Mice and Men
Cry Freedom
To Kill a Mockingbird

i bet you are as pleased as i am to hear that an author has been chosen to finish this series now.. i've not read any of Brandon Sanderson's books, but it might be time for me to go look for some! i think i will have to start from the first book again before i read the last, it's been so long since i have read any WOT books..
has anyone read the Dark Materials trilogy by Pullman? i haven't seen the Golden Compass yet, but it looks like a good fantasy movie.. i bought the books this past weekend.. i thought i got a great bargain too! there were three different editions of this series, books were either $19, $21 or $27.50 (!!) each, and i found the last boxed set (all three books) Borders had for $40! then used a 40% off coupon! :D

Patric, it's not so much being an eye opener to me at all. It's just confirming a lot of what I already knew about the region and yes it's confronting but it's more than that. So far the picture she paints is very bleak and even the small things that aid agencies accomplish in the region really do not have that great an impact. It's like the frog jumping out of the well - jumps up twice to slide back three times as far. It makes me wonder whether without some great political overhaul whether they will still be fighting the same fight in another 40yrs. It makes me think there is no end to it, unlike other conflicts throughout the African continent which resolved over time. :(
As far as making me want to pack my bags and go over and help, not likely. If I was remotely considering it, I definitely wouldn't do it now. :uhno:

It's not that I didn't enjoy it Trish but I don't know.....it was just overwhelming. :( I mean I know where she is coming from when you are so busy you can't scratch your butt but for her it was like that every single day....not to mention the lack of resources, time and technology. It just seemed so much more real for me than it might be for others. At times, I could almost feel myself there amongst the poverty and sadness which for me is usually the sign of a great book but honestly it just made me feel so sad and not the slightest bit uplifted until the last 10 pages. I guess that was the point though....to tell the story with raw honesty. Not sure if all that makes the least bit of sense but that's how I felt about it. :dk:
Laura it's on its way to you now and I do hope you enjoy it. :)

The Time Traveler's Wife is a novel by Audrey Niffenegger. It is an unconventional love story that centers on a man with a strange genetic disorder that causes him to unpredictably time-travel and his wife, an artist, who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences. In this book, unlike many other time travel stories, it is not possible to change the past or future.

Just started re-reading the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. Think I may have recommended this on an earlier thread.
Anyway, this is a very large fantasy series that I find extremely well written, creative, has several side stories running through it - all of which are very nicely tied into the main one - and if you like the genre is a definitely a page turner! Goodkind is, in my humble opinion, the most gifted fantasy writer to come on the scene in the last 20 years. He debuted with the first novel in this series, Wizard's First Rule in 1993, and finally finished the series in 2007 with the 11th one called Confessor - yes I said 11th :hehe: and you don't want to know how large each novel is.

Re: Sword of Truth series - He also put out a mini-novel a few books ago detailing Zedd's background and history. You could read it in one evening it's so small, but still every bit as good as the rest of them. I can send you the names of all the books if you want? Not telling you how things work out though. Don't want to spoil it for you!
But of course I've read the Wheel of Time series! And yes, thankfully Brandon Sanderson is planning to wrap it all in one novel. I google his website every few months for an update. Can't wait for it to come out! You did know that this series is as long as the Sword of Truth right? Only difference (in size) is that the individual novels are a bit smaller.
Love Brooks, Goodkind, Eddings, Stephen Donaldson, Dave Duncan - have seen books by Gemmell and Hobb, but haven't read any yet. Oh, did I mention that Stephen Donaldson has revived his best series - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant? There are currently two new books out of what I think is a trilogy and picks up ten earth years after the story ended the first time around. Covenant is back in the land and not dead.
Could you give me a couple of quick blurbs on your favourite books/series from Gemmell and Hobb? If they sound good I will add them to my wanna read list. Feel free to pm me anytime you want to babble about these kinds of books and are afraid to bore the other ladies. Cheers.

I liked Elly's book but it made me think too much about my own life and how it's different to how I imagined and it did make me a little bummed. I'm loving Swahili though....it's really cheering me up again. :D

I think I'm going to start my Cathy Kelly one next. I need something light and easy after Infidel.
Oh, did I mention that Stephen Donaldson has revived his best series - The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant?
loved that series, and the new Chronicles too.. did you like his Gap series? i think i liked that even more than Covenant..
you've not read any Robin Hobb? (incredulous look! lol..) i LOVE this author - have everthing she ever wrote, including books she wrote under another name, Megan Lindholm.. start with the Assassin series perhaps.. i can't imagine you not liking these books after reading your other likes.. Gemmel i also like a lot, i class his stuff as 'barbarian books' :) but thre's more to them than, say, the Conan books...

I just finished Tuesdays with Morrie and not I am on to a book called "beautiful boy" it's a father journey though his son's addiction. I have to say though it is one boring book. I realized after I bought this that he has written two other books that were never much of anything......hmmmmmm wonder why.
I hate books with huge words in it that I have to look up. I teach for gawds sake and if I can not understand who the heck will? It definitly doesn't grab and hold the readers attention.
I just finished reading "The Hollow" second part of the trilogy by Nora Roberts I really like all her books. Now I just started "Hold Tight" by Harlan Coben so far its interesting....

I'm half way through "What came before he shot her" by Elizabeth George and I gotta say it's intense. I'm finding that I don't wanna put it down and yet I'm so disturbed by the way the characters are developing that I don't wanna read it. Last night after about 20 pages I actually put it down and started reading the first book in The Tomorrow Series by John Marsden because I needed something totally different to take my mind off the torment in the Elizabeth George book. Can recommend it though for someone who really likes to get to the nitty gritty of disfuntional family life.
crashtest.. i was the same reading that book, took me a while to finish it.. which isn't like me! thanks for reminding me too, i have the next book, Careless in Red.. and have not read it yet.. had forgotten it was there.. :) still reading Sookie Stackhouse books, i'm reading the fourth one now..

I'm reading, The Bride Stripped Bare! It's actually written by, Anonymous and it's a diary about this woman on her honeymoon...
The blurb says it's an explosive novel of sex, secrecy and escape and it was placed next to the David Gemmel books i got out of the library yesterday...(which i haven't started reading yet) and it's every bit as intriguing as the title suggests....i couldn't stop reading it once i started lol

I am reading 'sold'. I haven't got the book on me, so I can't tell you the author. Its about a girl that was brought up in England, and her father took her and her sister back to somewhere in Arab land, and sold them off. The eldest sister ended up escaping after a lot of years and hence wrote this book. I have only just started it.

Just finished "half a a Yellow Sun" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - really enjoyed it. Based around five characters in the Nigeria-Biafra War of 1967-70.
It appears that the ladies on this site have a diverse range of reading tastes. So this maybe the right place to ask the question.
When I was in Japan I read a book by a Japanese author ( it had been translated ) about a boy that was left in a train station locker as a kid. Has anyone heard/ read this book? Because I would love to know the name of the author.

No, but Gail Tsukiyama writes beautiful novels based in Japan. I particularly liked the Samurai's Garden about a young Chinese boy stranded in the family holiday house in Japan during the second world war. It was a lovely gentle stroll of a book and I learned some interesting things from it.

If you like funny reads, try Housewife Down by Alison Penton Harper. It's a bit slow to start but once the hubby carks it, it's great! Look out for the 'clubbing incident'. I laughed til I cried at that bit.

Hey have any of you read any of the Diana Gabaldon books - first one is Crosstitch? Very interesting series about a Nurse called Claire who went to Scotland after the end of WW2 to get reacquainted with her husband (she was in the Medics and he was in espionage side of it I think) and she falls through some ancient sacred stones and finds herself in the 17th century. Sounds a bit ridiculous I know but very well written and quite informative. I hate romances but loved this one. :o) Especially her much younger highland lover, Jamie. :D

asked my 17 year old son if he had any I could borrow. He gave me one he got for his birthday from his aunt -The Razor's Edge, by Sommerset Maugham -
Your son's Aunt is to be commended for giving that book to your son!
It's an inspirational story of a very normal young guy in a very abnormal situation (WW1). And of an experience that was to influence his life later on (seeing his friend die).
I always think of my grandfather when i think of that book, because there are uncanny similarities in the lives of my grandpop and the main character in the book..
Yes, a book I actually should give my son to read..i have it in my library of books here.

LIZ BYRSKI
She has been described as being able to get inside women's heads and hearts...

I especially enjoyed Belly dancing for beginners and Food, sex and money. Am now just starting Trip of a lifetime :)

I loved Bellydancing for Beginners - her characters were so well written. I will wait to hear what you think of Trip (before I comment) ... Must scout out the third book you mentioned, Patric. :)
I am currently reading Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. It's hard slog - an interesting plot that is not written very well, if that makes sense! Normally I would ditch it but this time I am persisting because I want to know how it comes together.

Gang of Four ... was that the one where one of the girls had a house in Gracetown, overlooking the sea? And she left it to the other three?
Patricia
13-08-2008, 06:42 PM
The Gang of Four....
The 'gang of four', Isabel, Sally, Robin and Grace, are all fifty-something, successful... and restless. They have been close friends for almost two decades, supporting each other through personal and professional crises - parents dying, children leaving home, job changes, political activism, diets and really bad haircuts.
Isabel makes the first move, taking a year away from her family to follow in her mother's footsteps across Europe. Soon Sally is on her way to San Francisco, to come face to face with a guilty secret. Robin, in the wake of a clandestine relationship, heads for isolation in the country. And Grace? Well, Grace would never go away for an entire year, but she thinks she might take a short holiday in England. Once there, she bumps into someone she hardly knows - herself.
Gang of Four is a story of four very different journeys and a celebration of women in the prime of life.
jillybeanz
13-08-2008, 10:36 PM
Ah yes! That's the one. Yes I did enjoy that - although not as well written as Bellydancing, imo. (critical little bugger aren't I? :hehe: )
I think she did not name the town the hilday house was in, but it was clearly Gracetown. Do you remember the WA coastal town that had some cliff face collapse and kill several students and parents from the school, who were watching a surfing competition? Terribly sad thing to happen. Beautiful spot tho.

Last night I started 'Mummy said the f-word' at about 8pm and was giggling away in bed (and being shhhhhed every few minutes!) until I finished it after 11...it was so entertaining I really didn't want the story to finish and I wanted to know what happened to them next..:hehe:
i did that with the diary of anne frank. i started reading it about 9 pm and read til 6am i just couldnt put it down.

Hi ladies :waves:
I am reading CHANGE YOUR THINKING by Dr Sarah Edelman. It's a psychology self-help book. I want to change some of my thoughts and belief patterns that are negative and not getting me where I want to go in life. This has lots of helpful practical advice. I found this book through my studies which are going well at the moment. Term 2 is over in two weeks then I get a two week break. Can't wait! :y: It has been a long term

YES! Then I try to 'ration' the book ... but it never works! I always end up devouring it anyway. :) Man, I love books that are like that ...

LMAO Jaide ... you're going to be in that alternate universe for a while now, aren't you?
it didn't say book 3, like it should have!! i am going to look up the rest of the books i bought on sale that day too, and make sure they are not book 3 or worse too.. i know the Patricia Cornwall is the next one to the rest that i have, i always buy her books, and had missed that one.. and the David Gemmel is the first in a trilogy, so that's ok.. :)

A Tale from the Town of Widows - it is an excellent read.
Here's a small blurb if you're interested by the title:
Set against the backdrop of the ongoing Colombian war, this brilliant novel tells the story of Mariquita, a mountain village that’s forever altered the day a band of communist guerrillas forcibly recruits all but three of its men.
It's a beautifully written story. Jaide, I think you would like this one.

I've read Jessica Kell, I have a few of his books. I'm reading a scifi book called Body of Glass by Marge Piercy.
Interweaving cyberpunk and ecology, Jewish history and mythology , Marge Piercy gives us a giant of a futuristic novel, powerful and richly entertaining

I love reading and am currently reading Ken Follett's World without End, historical saga set in 14th century, not for the faint hearted though - has over 1000 pages
This is a sort of sequel (although the story is completely self-contained) from his previous book Pillars of the Earth, also about same size, highly recomend it if you are into historical detail, one of the best fiction books I have ever read.

Not as riveting as Pillars of the Earth, still very good, but am getting bogged down a bit, read about 400 pages so far and starting to struggle with it.
No, not neccesary to read Pillars again or even to have read it first, this story stands alone and really has little connection to the previous one.
thanks Lollipop! i will put Pillars back in it's place in the shelves, gratefully... World without End is big enough on its own! :) i am hoping i don't get bogged down in it too...
