i want to plant flowers this year..i haven't yet since i've moved in with DF, but every spring i tell him i want to and then i don't. well, this is going to be the year that i do! :hehe:
i'm just not so sure on what kind of flowers grow well and also look pretty..no, i'm no gardener, so some tips and what not will help. :)
what kind of flowers do you like planting/growing?! which ones adapt well to soil and not die so fast or which ones are easy to take care of?! and what's the difference between bulbs and seeds?! what's better?! sorry, i have lots of questions! :hehe:
i want to plant something that's going to last all spring/summer. :) it'll be my little project i suppose! thanks!

I love planting into big containers. That way you can move the container if you're having a garden party, etc. We plant Cannas (in garden or containers) -they're tall plants and beautiful, low maintanance as well. You do have to take roots out in the fall and store dry in your basement.
If you plant bubs they will come up again next year, seeds are mostly annuals and you'll have to replant them next year.
Some of the plants that I love in containers:
Geraniums - need sun, are beautiful in window boxes. You will have to put inside for winter, but with care they will blossom again next year. Also fuchsias are nice, especially in hanging baskets. I like lavender as well.
For annuals (grow once a year, will have to replant next year) I like:
Petunias
Marigolds
Pansies
violas
A nice combination in a basket would be petunias, fuchsias, and some catmint, campanula or ivy for greenery and fullness.
For spring bulbs I would pland, irises, crocus an daffodils.
Have fun!

thanks romana! i actually saw sweat peas at the store and i liked their colors and how they looked, but supposedly they grow pretty tall..i don't want anything that tall, but we'll see. i'll have to look into it more i think..
my mom usually plants impatiens (sp) every year, but i'm sick of them, lol, so i want to plant something different.

I love growing lavender there a lot of different type's and they are very hardy don't need a lot of care just cut them back after flowering, I like pansie's for annual's, geranium's are good there are some pretty colour's and they are pretty tough as well they can all be grown in pot's or in the garden. Have a look in the neighnourhood and see what is growing well in people's garden's.

I used to have sweet peas up the side of the house on a trellis they always looked nice and colourful and are quick growing too. Snapdragons look good too:)

When in doubt, ask at your local nursary or plant shop. They generally have a horticulturist on hand. They would be able to give you specific plants to suit your needs and soil etc.

Mixed flowers in a garden around the tree (as long as it is not too shady) sound lovely.
