View Full Version : My Fridge blew up

About 6.10am this morning, our fridge did it's normal shake and popping noise before it turned off, but when it did turn off - so did the rest of the house

We turned the fridge off at the wall and went outside to reset the safety/trip switch. Came back in and turned the fridge back on (just to check that it was the fridge) and it all went off again.

So, luckily I have a spare fridge in the garage - we were able to transfer everything across (My shopping day is tomorrow so I'm glad it happened today otherwise half the food would have been thrown out).

I've called the appliance guy (we seem to only have one in this area) and am waiting for them to call me back - it would be a disaster if it was an emergency - I hate waiting for a return call. Probably won't hear from them until after lunch when I won't be home and then they'll tell me they can't do it for 3 days or something stupid like that.

Might end up with a new fridge though so that's a good thing :hehe:

Will wait & see what happens I suppose :dk:

Good luck Barbara, hope the guy gets back to you soon or you may just have to sit down to one huge banquet :headh:
most times it is more costly to do up the old fridge than get a new one. How old is the fridge ?

How long have you had this fridge? Lucky it happened today and not tomorrow like you said.

Still a new fridge would be lovely in your new home I guess?

At least you don't have a lot of food going to waste. Hopefully it can't be fixed so you can get a brand new one :D

we had the same thing happen a couple weeks ago. except the fridge just started leaking like crazy and the fan or something broke.? anyway, to fix it, it would have cost us 400 dollars, so we said forget it, we'll just get a new one..the one we bought was around 600, so it would have been stupid to just fix it when we could have gotten a new one. hope you get a new fridge! :)

I'm not reading.... not looking.... my 32year old fridge just snaps, crackles and pops along nicely and I don't wish to tempt fate.

Hope you get it sorted out quickly either way :)

I know :hehe: I can't win at the moment LOL

The appliance guy finally rang back and will be coming over tomorrow (after 1pm) but I am going to get him to do a report for our insurance and claim it on that. Hopefully, the motor has blown which means they will reimburse us for a new fridge.

Hubby has been able to get a few good quotes today on some fridges - so it's just a waiting game at the moment.

Am so glad we have the spare fridge though - especially seeing as it is 39* here at the moment LOL

Heather - that is such a good run for a fridge! - Mine has been going snap crackle and pop for the last year or so, but this morning it went bang :hehe: Will keep my :fx: that your fridge keeps popping LOL

I dread my fridge dying... Mine is only a year old so hopefully I have over 30 years left in it like Heather's fridge :D
I hope it is the motor so you can get a nice new one for nix!

Barb, I just recently bought a huge fridge with the little door in the front and the ice chiller etc. But if I was going to buy one now....I would be looking for a separate double fridge..pidgeon pair. This big one is really only for two people. The size is deceiving. I actually have another fridge in my kitchen as well.LMAO but this is because there is four of us.

i love those stainless steel fridges where it's the double door fridge and then the freezer is on the bottom and it's like a drawer. DF doesn't like those, but i told him i'm still going to get one of those fridges when we move into a house. :D

Well the appliance guy came today and after a quick look at it, knew what was wrong. It wasn't the motor that blew - just the heating element. He told me I won't be able to claim the repair but I can claim lost food. Although after I pay the excess, it just isn't worth it.

BUT, get this, I'm so shitty - he had to take a shelf out to get to the part to look at and when he put the shelf back in he seemed to be struggling. I was standing there thinking that I never had that much trouble putting the shelves in but just let him put it in (afterall, he is the repairman and knows what he is doing ) Anyway, when he left, I went back to the fridge to move the shelf down as he had put it too high and he has actually torn a huge hole in the inside wall of the fridge x( so now I don't even know if you can use it once it has a hole in it :dk:

I rang them and left a message but no-one had called me back by 4.45pm so I rang again and spoke to the dad (it's a family business) and he said he would get the son to call me - but of course, no phone call. Guess, I'll be on the phone to them again in the morning. How bad is that?!?!?

That is very bad Barbara, I would think once it has ahole in the wall it would be a good place for bacteria to form.

Oh God...dont talk to me about fridges!

Mine stopped working the first week in January and it took them til two weeks ago to get around to fixing it...it is under extended warranty and everyone just kept passing the buck to each other...It was supposedly fixed five times all up and the 'repairer' just had to keep coming back 'cause I personally dont think he knew what he was doing...TG it's working now though *TOUCH WOOD*

Barbara
19-03-2008, 01:00 PM
I just rang them again - and the lady who answered the phone said it was the first she had heard about it. I told her I left a message on their answering service around 2pm yesterday just after he had left and I also spoke with the father last night at 4.40pm  Don't think she was expecting me to remember all the names etc - she said both the father and son are on the road at the moment but she will speak to them and get back to me today.

She better is all I can say .........

What a hassle! I hope that you get a call back soon. I think that dealing with bad workmanship should be a priority

Barbara
19-03-2008, 05:40 PM
It's okay Tina - I am really good at keeping records and threatening things when I need to - I used to be a law clerk and dealt with people like that all the time :hehe:

He rang me back and said he didn't realise that he had done it but would bring everything he needs to tomorrow (along with the part needed) and will fix everything up. There was no issue with it - I asked if it would make any difference to the function of the fridge and he has assured me that it will all be fixed and there will be no problems.

:D

Barbara

[QUOTE=Barbara;287432]I know :hehe: I can't win at the moment LOL
.

Am so glad we have the spare fridge though - especially seeing as it is 39* here at the moment LOL

Hope you have the problem sorted out now hun, unfortunate about the temperature......over here it's taking turns to either, snow, hail, sleet or just rain. In fact I left my milk delivery outside through Friday till Saturday am because it was colder than putting it into the fridge.
Still it's Easter after all and the first day of British Summertime next weekend.....all those poor little spring lambs and bunnies out in the cold. I am still wearing my winter jacket.

My aunt who lives next door bought a new fridge just before Christmas, and she says it "moo's" at her, and you know thats just what it sounds like....too many dairy products in it maybe :brow:

a mooing fridge :brow: now I heard everything LMAO

Barbara
28-03-2008, 08:15 AM
Still waiting

Apparently, it took longer for them to get the part - am so shitty with them for NOT telling me. I have been ringing them twice a day since Easter with no return call. Hubby rang and of course got an answer (because he knows the guy) - They were supposed to be here yesterday but didn't turn up and again, no call to explain why - so I will be calling them again this morning x(

Next time, I think I'll pay the extra and call someone from another town to come out.

Get your boxing mitts on Barbara and have it out with them

I would be incredibly peeved by now....any chance of ringing another repairer?? :dk:

Barbara
28-03-2008, 11:02 AM
I did think about that yesterday but he has ripped that hole in the fridge so I really need him to come back to fix that. I have called them this morning but got their answering machine again so have left another message. I have to head down the street around 1pm so if they haven't called me back, I'll be popping into their factory for a visit.

Barbara
29-03-2008, 06:04 PM
It's all fixed. He FINALLY came over this morning and fixed the element and the hole in the side. We ended up with a $60 discount as well. Have not long transferred everything back into it. It's so nice to go to the normal fridge again rather than having to go out into the garage :)

Supa
29-03-2008, 06:51 PM
woohoo about time!! Bonus on the discount too!!

Stormy
30-03-2008, 10:57 AM
I can't believe it took them the best part of a fortnight to fix it! :O

But at least they did give you a discount for your troubles :)
