I would like to. I'll be with others at the time, hoping that there'll be some like minded people about. :)
I hope some restaurants do it and dine by candlelight.

I have just read an article on news.com.au which makes out the whole earth hour thing to be a bit of a joke. Could just be the different newspapers fighting it out again. Might do some more research into whether or not turning off lights for an hour will make any difference. There is claims that it won't make a scoobie.

I am not so sure that it is so much about saving power for that one hour anyway than it is about promoting awareness...
I will be at a 50th and I hope that Earth hour will be observed by everyone there :)

Well our lights will be off for an hour for each time zone in Australia as there will be no one here but the cats. :hehe: Our lights are usually off at that hour anyway because we watch TV in the dark :D

Hello Muffkay.....I hope it is a success....it is only one hour and it could send a powerful message to governments that this is what the people want....not industry.
We did it last year and will again this time. We don't have any appliances on except the fridge. No computers, TVs or anything else. Scrabble by candle light anyone? LOL

Well we did our bit for earth hour,
one of my sons was right into it, as they had been talking about it at school,
and he made us turn off the TV and dare i say it, the computer, all electrical appliances,
so it was a game of uno by candle-light,

Well I don't think that the part of the Gold Coast that we were in last night was that into it. Most of them had porch lights on, if not most of their other lights as well. It would have been interesting to have driven into Brisbane CBD last night and see how many of the office high rises still had their lights on....did anyone happen to see? :dk:

We did it at the party last night.....candles all over the place....try deciding what you are putting on your plate when it's too dark to see what's on offer.

Eating in the dark is supposed to enhance the pleasure of taste Heather :)
Heather

OK.....too old to go down that road....I like to see what I'm eating (above the belt's Ladies, please) :hehe:

No I'm serious and I was being complete above belt :brow:
Turning the lights off allows the senses to focus on taste and smell, rather than sight as well. It's supposed to be a bit of a fad when dining overseas. :dk:

Well I kind of did.
We didnt get home until 8:15pm and I noticed I have left my lamp on in the bedroom. So I turned it off. We had our computers going and that was it.
I rememeber last year I really wanted to do it. I was pumped for it and then silly me totally forgot about it until 10pm that night. I was so disapointed.
Do you think many people around the world actually did it?
lucyloo
30-03-2008, 03:13 PM
I haven't heard, but we did it. The kids are roght into it, and my eldest DD said we should have an earth hour once a week! There wasn't alot of houses around that seemed to be doing it.
holly
30-03-2008, 03:16 PM
Yeah I noticed not many houses around my house did it either. Driving home I was amazed at how mnay houses had lights on. Quiet disapointing really

Yeah, I agree Holly, its not like it took a lot of effort!

For all the people that either forgot about it or missed the 8pm time, call me silly but why can't you do it at another time?
Just because the masses picked 8pm timeslot last Saturday night doesn't mean you can't do your bit for the earth tonight or tomorrow night or every night if you so choose.
I myself was away on the weekend and even though I attempted to talk the kids I was with into doing it, they weren't really that excited and the whole thing kindof went pear shaped so I'll be having my Earth Hour tonight at 7pm so my son and I can play boardgames by candlelight before he goes to bed :D
If it goes well we might even make a tradition of it and do it once a month.

I was listening to our local station and they stated that it would actuallly cost double to turn everything back on
Who knows how they came up with this or how acurate this statement is
Anyone else hear the same thing on their stations ?
while it's true that it costs more to turn on fluro lights than it does other lights (Mythbusters proved that one! :)) i'm not sure on it costing double.. it's a 26% spike for a fluro, so it's actually cheaper leaving it on... (from my ever diminishing memory)
Stormy
31-03-2008, 07:49 PM
I think from my Mythbuster memory, yes for fluoros it was cheaper to leave them on but for the long life bulbs and even standard bulbs, it's better to switch them off

I heard a lot people who thought it was stupid and deliberately had all their lights on in protest. With this sort of mentality not sure if the exercise will work. Although it does still make people aware of the point even if they do the opposite.:P

Wasn't last year just Sydney involved and now this year the whole world was involved, they showed how cities looked in the Sunday papers, San Fran seemed to do well...I was babysitting so I did my bit and put my nephew to bed and just lay on the lounge and rested...it was very peaceful in Wahroonga, lots of people observed it there, I went out to look on the street and hardly any lights on at all, only dim ones also at the train station.

I participated in Earth Hour and text everyone in my cell to do the same. My husband and I played cards by candlelight.
