Does anyone here have pet insurance ?? Have you found it useful or a waste of money??
Something we are considering but not sure about. After any & all thoughts :D

No, I think it's a waste of money. Your better off setting up an online savings account just for pet emergencies and depositing a little in it each week.

Agreed.....the ex and I considered it, but the companies that provide coverage are few and far between, premiums are horrendous, you could only claim for major operations or treatments....just not worth it.

No I don't have it as it doesn't cover pets over 7-8yo (Mojo) and doesn't cover animals with pre-existing conditions (Rosie). I think it's better to just put money aside for the hopefully very occasional vet emergency so it is there when you need it. I have a Rabo Plus account especially for this :)

Too expensive IMO.

My Grand parents have it as an extra on their home and contents insurence (APIA i think??)
However beng pensioners they get it cheaper so it works out good for them.

We have it in our home insurance with RACQ - it cost less that $40 for the year. We haven't used it (hopefully won't have to) but i have a friend who had insurance and used it when her pet dog was run over - she claimed over $800.

I have been studying this online for a couple of weeks now...I thought it was a good idea and some even include your regular visits (so needles and check ups)...but now I am thinking maybe I will just put the money aside (like I do into my bill paying account)...
Any idea how much I should put aside per month?
Teena I dont know, I am still looking & trying to work it out, as we *may* end up with a female English Mastiff for breeding so I will need to factor in the puppies, pregnancy visits etc. IF we get a girl she will be a puppy so I will have 18months of saving before breeding starts anyway. Its all just thoughts atm though

I put aside $50 a fortnight for two cats which is $1300 a year. That is purely for emergencies though, standard vet care (shots, worming and flea treatment), I just pay when I need to. I figure it is well and truly enough given that my cats are indoors and thus, not likely to get mauled by a dog or run over by a car.
If you were to include shots, worming, flea treatment and emergencies for all your animals, you'd have to contact your vet for prices of consultations etc. I know I get discounts on shots if I take both cats in at once ($125 for the pair, $85 each otherwise) so maybe other vets do this as well. :dk:

Thats what I am thinking of too Tina (St Bernard) a couple of places offer normal vet checks in their insurance policy...which I think is great...it's not like I am going to put money into something that isn't going to pay off (like my last car insurance...cost me $30 a month and I never used it)...
