Do you have recipes that have been handed down the generations? I recently got a lovely book for writing down recipes in and i want to fill it with all my specialities plus some other really good dishes. Im starting with desserts and sweets, as that is my area of expertise, and the first entry is for the classic scones.

What would/have you put in a family recipe book?

My mum's shortbread
Tuna casserole

...I'd add in stacks of my own favourites that I've discovered over the last 20yrs. (It's a pretty wide ranging collection. I write down/glue my recipes in a large bound divided exercise book....I will spew if I ever lose it! There's been a lot of research!! :D)

Not really, but my Nana (who, bless her, was as talented in the kitchen as I am ... sadly for her my grandfather didn't cook the way my husband does) gave me lots of tips for getting out of kitchen 'scrapes'. I think of her fondly every time I use her tip for 'mashing' lumps out of bechamel sauce :)

I think my mum has a recipe book somewhere - I vaguely remember her opening it up a few times when I was younger. All of my recipes are scribbled on a bit of paper and in plastic pockets in a folder (I love to make a mess when I cook so they are in plastic for easy clean ups :hehe:). Half of them are handed down ones that I have either copied from mum, my MIL or my SMIL. A book would be lovely, but it would take me forever to re-write them though :)

I would include all of my Grandmother's fantastic recipes. Like pickled onions, jams, chutneys, biscuits, slices and her famous ginger fluff sponge.....*drool*

Nope....my mother was not really a cook and my maternal Grandmother had a cook. My paternal Grandmother was not interested in girls and we only saw her for a short time when we went up to Maryborough for holidays anyway....we never had dinner with her.
I have a couple of exercise books with my own tried and true recipes plus any that interest me.

Ooh yeah, must include my mummy's lemon slice. Delish! (That's the one I gave to Red and Ezmay when I first met 'em.)

I make a Tuna Casserole that my mum used to make. I buy Super Food Ideas and recipie books similar to that, tear out what I know that I will cook, and my family will like, and stick them into clear plastic pages, and into a folder. I have one for main meals and one for deserts and snacks.

I have inherited about half of my mum's cookbook collection.....although to be honest I rarely actually use them :hehe:

When I was in high school dad made up a recipe book on the computer of all mums recipes that she had collected from family and friends over the years and I still use lots of recipes out of that. My girls are starting to cook some of the food in it now.

My MIL has books and books and books of recipes, collected from family and friends and also magazines and TV. All the books are just about full and most are handwritten - and none are organised into any particular categories! Makes choosing a recipe a lot like a lucky dip! LOL

i would love to get recipes handed down to me.
i love my grandmother's soups. today she made barley soup with vegetables and it was so good! i would also like to learn how to make stuffed cabbage. my mom makes a really good potato salad full of all kinds of veggies. i would love to learn how to make that too. :)
i really should start learning! :hehe:

Kiki- you should start learning now. Yesterday I asked my nana for her classic recipes so when i see her next week i can add more to my little red book. She also cuts out heaps of recipes from magazines and newspapers for me. If she were a fitter younger woman I would love to spend all day cooking with her but I will settle for her recipes and handy tips

i'm learning to make meats right now, lol. so far it's chicken, but i think if i had to i'd be able to take on pork and steak with no problem..just haven't yet. but after that, then i'd like to learn how to make the soups and whatnot-except mostly what i like that i'd have to ask my family for the recipe, DF and the kids wouldn't eat it, so therefore i'd have to make it for my family IYKWIM otherwise here it'd just go to waste. :(

Im the only one in my house who would 80% of the stuff i want to cook so i make it anyway and freeze it into individual portions and i have those when DF and DS have hotdogs or something im sick of eating

yeah, that's a good idea ez. maybe i can just freeze it and have it when i'm sick of certain foods too. :)
