For DS 4th birthday we are having a Thomas the Tank Engine theme. Other than thomas cup cakes what other 'train' food could we have.
Also should I put out carrot sticks and the like or will pies, sausage rolls and mimi hot dogs be sufficient?

What about a fruit plate, single grapes, small watermelon slices, pineapple.. that kind of thing? They have been popular at a few of the kids parties I have been to this year.
One of my friends did a train cake for her son a few weeks ago out of the WW kids cake cookbook I think. The one with the lollies in the cake carriages. It was a hit!
How about a chocolate fondue? As dippers use grapes, banana pieces, marshmallows, pineapple pieces etc. Tell a story or play a Thomas the tankegine video and everytime a certain word is mentioned the kids get to dip in.

Yes a fruit plate would be great :)
Fairy bread is ALWAYS a hit.
Homemade sausage rolls are great as you can hide lots of grated carrot and zucchini in them :hehe:
Homemade chicken nuggets are another popular item..
Kids love lots of cheese cubes and kabana and stuff they can grab quickly too
Hope it all goes well Ezmay :)

I'd go for a fruit plate rather than the carrot sticks.....well unless you plan on having a big tub of philly cheese to dip the carrots in. :hehe:
I was just thinking....we had fairy bread at the niece's and nephew's party a few weeks ago and I had a slice of it. Made me wonder why on earth I liked it as a kid

My daughter turned 4 last year and I had raw veggies and various dips. There were carrot sticks, beans, celery, and gherkins.
Also fruit salad
Mini Cup Cakes
Savoury Pastries with spinnach and ricotta
Assorted sandwiches (vegemite, jam, egg, egg and lettuce, fairy bread)
Potato and Leek Fritattas
Battered sweet potato and corn
A couple of packets of chips and lollies
It was a hit with all the kids and the adults.
This year it's a dinosaur theme so she's having a dinosaur cake, but the food will probably not vary too much, if at all. Since it's a green theme which matches the dinosaur theme the cup cakes will have green icing on them. Maybe some arrowroot biscuits with green icing too.
You could make a train-like server and have the food on that.
Thomas is blue so you could do blue icing on the cup cakes.
Also, chocolate crackles! Think I'll make some of those this year :P

I like those 2 ideas but, stuff making homemade sausage rolls & homemade chicken nuggets just buy them in the box & heat in the oven i could'nt be bothered making them for a little kids party because they waste so much, fairy cakes are good too . sorry Ez I cant think of anything train wise except the Bday cake i even asked DH & he can't come up with anything, hang on i will phone my sister shes good with this stuff. Nah sorry Ez she said the same, apart from the cake she can't think either

What if you made or bought plain biscuits and then used the Icing Gel to make ail Road track signs.
Salada biscuits with a suitable topping and the mini Ritz crackers attached as wheels or if you are going the fruit platter route (pardon pun) cut some melon into rectangular strips with some melon balls cut in half for the wheels.
Have fun.

I would also suggest making things in mini for kids that young. The cupcakes I make are using a mini muffin tray, even the butterfly cakes can be made using these. They are bite sized for little kids and if they don't eat the whole thing not much is wasted. You can make twice as many doing it that way and limit waste :D

THanks for the ideas ladies. I think i was a bit ambitious with the train food. I will make sandwiches with jam, vegemite etc and cut them out with a train biscuit cutter. Other than that i think i will go to a place near me that sell bulk nugget, party pies and sausage rolls. As for the fruit platter i think carrot sticks, celery and grapes will do the trick
