Storms episode with the Sweet Potato soup got me thinking!
What disaster have you had in the kitchen in your time?
I will start of when I was young I cooked a chook in the oven in an oven bag BUT left the chook in the wrapping that it came in!

When I was in high school I cooked some biscuits (cookies, Kiki :hehe:) and then went out and forgot about them. About 3 horus later I walked in the door and wondered what the smell was. Amazingly, they weren't burnt, just rock hard! We had fun throwing them at the ground trying to break them. My brother actually tried to eat them...

Oh gosh which one:blink:
My most memorable was just a few weeks after I moved out of home and I decided to cook veal schnitsels (sp?) I rang mum to double check the recipe and we must have got a bit off topic coz she never mentioned breadcrumbs, I thought that was odd but cooked it just as mum said "dip the meat in the flour then the egg" and me "is that it and just chuck it into the frypan?" mums reply "yes".
It tasted like veal scrambled eggs and looked really gross but we still ate it. I did cook it properly a couple of weeks later and it was very nice with breadcrumbsLMAO

LMAO@Mel!
I have another one Mum was out one day me and my sisters decided to try and cook honeycomb it was a disaster! It set a bit to soon and it was stuck to the saucepan we panicked and thought we would get in to trouble so I ran down to the bush down the back and buried the saucepan.
We told Mum years later!LMAO

I was and still am to a certain degree hopeless when it came to cakes, biscuits etc. I was starting to make some success cooking cakes in the microwave (at least they rose)...so the ex wanted a sponge cake, he provided me with a packet mix and asked for it to be layered.
So clever me halved the batter and cooked in two pans but for the full amount of time....result....two polystyrene patties that the dogs played Frisbees with.

LMAO

My disasters are all about the same. I burn something, set off the smoke alarm - which is wired to mains power through the security alarm and it is LOUD. Inevitably, one (several) of the neighbours knock on the door to check I'm ok. This has happened a few times. So it's not like my food is ever disasterous in itself, it just never makes it to the plate for testing.

When I was a kid I decided to make a cake from a packet mix in the pantry unfortunately I got mixed up as to which was the cake mix and which was the icing.. I added eggs, water and butter to the icing mix and tried to bake it

I have had more disasters in the kitchen than successes, but one that sticks in my mind was the Chilli Con Carn I made to take to my parents 40th wedding anniversary which we had invited about 40 guest :D, 40 guest do not all fit through one door at a time racing for one tap :headh: first time I have seen so many grown men cry.

like Di Nana, i have more disasters than successes with the meals i try to prepare, i'm not good at cooking at all.. i used to be good at baking biscuits, cakes, slices etc.. sweeties i like! :) but one time.... remember the old boil a can of condensed milk to make caramel trick? i let one boil dry one day, and yep, it exploded... my friend and i toiled mightily that day cleaning caramel from every surface in the kitchen, including the ceiling.. :D we never did that again, and thankfully can buy caramel in a tin now...

The hugest mistake I ever made was setting the kitchen on fire, which I have already written in another thread, but I'll tell you all again.
I was cooking taco shells in one of those little ovens on top of the bench. I got carried away watching a show on tele, and the next minute I hear the smoke alarm going off. I went to check what was going on, and I saw a small fire in the little oven.
Not thinking, I opened up the door, and whooska, next minute the fire was reaching up to the ceiling!! I quickly ran out side screaming "Shane help the kitchens on fire' He grabbed a fire extinguisher and came racing back inside. He quickly pulled the pin, and sprayed the powder, but he had it facing himself, and he blew it into his face. I swear to god, it blew his eyes apart!!
So then he couldn't see, so he was blowing the friggibn thing everywhere. Blew the shit out of the mince, and yes, he put the fire out.
My white cupboards were now black and the kitchen looked like a cyclone had been through it. It took me ages to clean it up, and I through that oven out straight away, cause og course it was the ovens fault!!
And yes, we still laugh about it....well, me more then DH :D

:O Lucy! I don't think I've read that story before ... OMG I am laughing now but I bet it was scary at the time.

When we invite people over I don't cook. Either my husband does (he's great, can't think of any failures he's had) or we get take away.

thankfully i've never set the kitchen on fire at least.. :D lost a few pots due to burnt on food tho.. altho last time that happened, i used that bicarb hint from another thread here, and it worked!

like others have said, i have take away or home delivery when guests come, unless my husband feels like webering.. we have guests tomorrow night - we are having pizza! at least i know the child likes good ol' ham and pineapple pizza..

What is this magical bicarb tip? I currently have a black saucepan sitting on my sink from my last great effort. It hasn't gone to the big kitchen in the sky, but I just can't be bothered doing all that scrubbing so if there's an easier way, please share!

Cherie

Have to soak pan in water and carb soda overnight Naomi, but there is still some scrubbing involved.:uhno:

Most things I cook turn out reasonable well, my biggest sin is I cook a really good dish and I have a habit of overcooking just a little too much I'm always putting something under the griller and forgetting about it, and setting off the smoke alarm when I cook dinner for guests I have to concentrate on not cooking things for too long, I'm sure I've had disasters but we have selective memories about certain things.

23-05-2008, 09:52 PM
Naomi put some water and salt in it and let it boil for a while should make it easier to clean!

Heather

I always used to boil some BiCarb and water in burnt pans....yes it did help, but there was still a lot of elbow grease required.
I now use a can of Cola drink, poured into the pan and left overnight.....scarey how effective it is.

Stormy
24-05-2008, 03:27 PM
Well makes sense....cola dissolves a whole tooth in just under 3 days when immersed in it. :hehe:

I have blown up the microwave cooking a roast chook. As a result i had to use the oven to re heat the meals for DS, DF, MIL, FIL SIL and myself.
The biggest kitchen disaster that i know of in the family is DF's aunty burnt a salad!!! It was a chicken salad and she put it in the oven to keep the chicken warm.

it was in a kitchen hints thread somwhere here.. that bicarb trick.. i just covered the burnt bottom with bicarb, added a little water, brought it to the boil, let it simmer for a minute or two... took it off, rinsed with cold water to cool it down, and the burnt stuff scraped right off! a little steel wool, and it was done! and i was all prepared to go out and buy another one too.. :) (like i usually do)

Will definitely try cola next time we have a disaster.

One distaster i had was blowing up a baking dish by leaving it on a hotplate which was turned on - it literally blew up, sounded like a bomb went off and there were shards of baking dish and gravy everywhere. The friends we had for dinner that night took an awful long time to eat their meal - i think were scared it might blow up too.

I burnt the pot with the TT's Nacho mix last night....yes, I was on here....Rosie got all the loose stuff off and this morning I poured half a glassful of flat coke.....have just swirled the pan....my heavens it is looking pretty clean under the yukky liquid.

hmm.. i always have bicarb in the cupboard, never have cola unless some guest leaves some behind.. but if it works as well, i might go buy some next time i have a burnt pot.. :)

I suck at cooking roasts, I dont know why, I make sure they are thawed and are put in the oven for the right amount of time per kg but they never cook properly :(

Phew - I am so glad I am not the only one.

When I was 16 I decided I would make honey chicken. Now I am not one for owning recipe books - I have always just invented things ! I had no idea how to make honey chicken so I just cut breasts into strips and pured honey over them and put them on a foil sheet under the grill which was a gas flame style one.

I think I wandered off for a minute or so - maybe to the loo. When I returned my younger brother was screaming at me "The kitchens on fire". The whole grill was aflame and up the wall to the cupboards above.

We managed to put it out by throwing every teatowel we owned onto the meat and very flammable honey and then threw water on the cupboards. The oven, half the benchtop and the cupboards were wrecked !

My brother and I lived alone at the time - my father worked away and would come back every few months to fill the fridge and freezer for us and pay any bills.

He freaked out when he saw the mess and we soon learned why. The house had actually been sold and we were meant to be moving out a month later ! Dad was sooooooo not impressed having to spend his profits on a kitchen makeover !

Of course I look back now and think hmmmmmmm fathers leaving 16 and 14 year olds to raise themselves could generally expect a lot worse surprises than a kitchen fire !!!!!

i had a little accident the other night, i was cooking dinner and i put the pot of potatoes on the hotplate and turned it on and about 10mins later i could smell something burning but it wasnt the potatoes it was the hotplate covers (2 stacked on top of each other) that were sitting on the back hotplate! id turned the wrong plate on by accident and the hot plate covers were well and truly burnt. B/F reckons i could have burnt the palce down had it been a tea towel or something so now i make sure everything is off the stovetop before i turn it on!
