View Full Version : Sleeping tablets?
Do any of you girls take sleeping tablets? If so do you take them all the time or just every now and then?
The Doc has prescribed me Stilnox I am a bit hesitant as I hear you can get addicted but hey if you can get a good nights sleep why wouldnt you!:brow:
I am thinking maybe take one on the weekends in case I am to groggy the next day?

The thought has crossed my mind before Jen. Some nights I have a wonderful sleep, but others.... and I feel like crap the next day.
I haven't been to the dr and asked him, and I suppose a little bit of me would be scared as well about the addictive part. You hear some horror stories!! Just do a bit of your own research on it, maybe google, and see what you come up with.
Can you try half a tablet to start off with? And see how that affects you...:)

not for me Jen, my Dr told me to have a half cup of port wine half hour before bed & Jen it worked fantasic just half a cup
Stilnox is the drug that came into the news after Heath Ledger died... there have been a lot of weird side effects with that particular drug, please do some research on the net before taking this! i wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole, as the saying goes..
i have had periods of insomnia that i have attributed to menopause... i had a lengthy period at one stage, around 8-9 months at a stretch where i would be up out of bed again at all hours of the night.. i didn't have to work, so i could afford to let my sleeping patterns take their own path.. i would not take sleeping pills. i would rather be tired than drugged. :) actually, i have to admit it, this is when i started my friendship with guarana.. :D and gave up on my resolve to avoid caffeine...
good luck.
found this: http://www.tga.gov.au/alerts/stilnox2.htm
lol.. i keep editing to add things here... have you tried things like those teas that are supposed to promote calm and sleep etc.. as MOC said, a glass of wine perhaps.. altho when i tried the all natural approach to sleep, i found i would go to sleep briefly, then be awake again in a couple of hours anyway.. but worth trying as we are all different in our reactions to things...
yes, another edit... i find it hard to believe that this drug is still being prescribed by doctors here.. why is it still on the market at all?

Hey Jen
Well I used to be an addict to sleeping tablets, had to go to detox to get off the buggers. I started taking them after my husband left and it was a bloody long struggle to get them out of my life. I actually think this is why I might have had a miscarriage the first time.
They don't take long to get addicted too, it was a long struggle to get off them. Just a word of warning that is all, I am sure they might work fine for you. Everyone is different.
I have heard terrible things about Stillnox; I remember watching the Sunday program and it was scary what the effects were on people...people driving cars in the middle of the night, eating huge amounts of food, one women even stabbed herself and caused some serious damage.
I would look at alternatives first.
Take care

I put lavender sleep balm on my temples and under my nostrils....knocks me out in moments. It's called Sleep Aid. Fabulous stuff.
If I need to bomb myself out, a couple of times a year I will take a teaspoon of Benadryl couch syrub (original ONLY). Magic - 14-16 hours sleep for me.

My son was on Stillnox for awhile and he had no side effects whatsoever exept for a good nights sleep. All I can recommend is that you DON'T DRINK ALCOHOL before taking them, take them as YOUR GETTING INTO BED, and make sure your not by yourself the first few times you take them untill you know wether you have a reaction or not. Sleeping tablets are strong medication and should be treated as such, be carefull and follow all the instructions and you should be fine. But please don't drink before you take them, that seems to be the common thread amongst people with side effects.

I was proscribed sleeping tablets once, for the same reason Alexa was, luckily I hadn't used them, My sister In Law who at the time was in charge of the mental health unit at our City hospital saw them in the bathroom cupboard and tipped them down the basin.
I know my mum takes them and has for years.
I actually had a very scary experience with two sleeping pills thanks to my sister at the time, but that's another story :headh:
I would try a glass of port or Brandy first Jenr but then that can be addictive to  maybe the Lavender, I have a Lavender pillow, but I think it gives me hay fever

Jackie O took these pills once, and ended up cooking some muffins in the middle of the night, and then forgetting that she put them on, and then had the fire brigade knocking on her door, as she had a fire in the kitchen, and she didn't even know, and she didn't even remember, it is like a blank.
Very scary Jen.

i only have taken over the counter sleeping pills..i found that the ones i did take didn't even work. :( but then again, i was able to take a nap during the day and then i was fine. BUT, what i realized was was that the naps i took would make me stay awake later at night, so once i stopped taking naps everyday, i fell asleep every night. once in a blue moon i'll take a nap, but it never interferes with my sleep.
i agree with the other ladies. maybe look into it more and maybe there's a different type of sleeping pill you can take. oh, and i didn't feel addictive when i took them at all..
Thanks girls yeh I am a bit hesitant about the sleeping tabs as I have a hubby who is pops that many pills its not funny he has a lot of trouble waking up I think he takes Phenergan to help sleep the doc took him of Stilnox?
Anyway where do you get the Sleep Aid Kekka?

Wouldn't touch Stillnox either, not after reading about the side effects some people experienced - wouldn't take the chance.
Have you tried any herbal /natural remedies. Bach's Flower essences have a a remedy called "Rescue Sleep". I can highly recommend it - it's safe, non addictive and you won't wake up feeling like you had a big night on the town. There are also sleepytime teas available made by a number of different companies or you could just try chamomile tea. Preparing for sleep by having a warm candlelight bath with a few drops of essential oil of lavender, a cup of chamomile tea and making sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep all help.
Pleasant dreams.

oh, that reminds me..i have bath salts that actually have something in them that makes you sleepy. the first time i used it in the bath, i fell asleep right after for about 3-4 hours. that was during the day, so maybe something like that would help you for the whole night..

I may have missed something here Jenr, but why is it that you cant sleep, is it menopause, or are you worried , depressed, what is the reason, I find now that I am older I find it harder to sleep all night, but have just put it down to older age, although hubby says it is because I am cooking my insides as sleep with the blanket on high,
just wondering as if you have a worry or something , shouldn't your Doc focus on that.
and don't sleeping pills make you feel all drugged and not a refreshed sleep
Pretty sure its menopause Di!
I was the best sleeper until I had the hysterectomy last year?

I am sorry to hear that Jen , nothing worse than tossing and turning ,belting the shit out of your pillow , listening to hubby snore, while your mind replays your life over and over and over again, does reading make you tired, I find if I go to bed with a book, I wake up on the same page with still book in hand, and my $2.00 glasses still on face,
I do feel for you I have had the odd night when I can't sleep and have really wanted to it is horrible,
PS just thought of the perfect solution Jen, I could come and stay, my sisters always said I talked them to sleep , and have seen hubby nod off when I am in full conversation
meno madness is a horrible thing to live with at times... i have found a measure of relief from my symptoms just lately tho.. mainly the hot flushes, altho i have been sleeping longer lately too.. i am taking Blackmores Phytolife, and also Blackmores Evening Primrose Oil with Fish Oil capsules.. i had wondered at the effect of the Phytolife, seemed to make a difference at first, but now with the Primrose Oil too, i have had fewer hot flushes and night sweats, and those i still have are not as bad as they were..
i hesitated to type that before, not really knowing if it was meno or anxiety perhaps.. might be worth attacking the root cause? or at least trying this lot too? it did take a good month or so before i really noticed the change..

Thanks Zen I take Promensil it helped a little bit with the flushes I still get them though.
I am hesitant to take Fish Oil because of Thyroid problems.

61 and still having the odd period! good grief.. it's only been just over a year since my last one, and i am so happy about that! well, i'm not so happy about the hot flushes etc, but still... :)
jenr.. if you are taking Promensil, you won't need anything else on top.. i don't like the effect of the black cohosh, or is it just red clover in promensil - i forget! lol.. what a surprise... i don't like either.. :D Phytolife is just soy extract, plus calcium.. BUT! you mentioned a thyroid problem, i read somewhere that too much soy can be bad for the thyroid if taken in high quantities, so maybe not worth the risk for you.. ? sorry i can't help.. :)
My Mum still gets hot flushes and she is 70 next month!

Hi there,
I came across this forum after receiving a Google alert, and just wanted to add to the comments that have already been made about Stilnox.
Stilnox was responsible for my sister's death in September 2007, and her death is one of at least twenty Stilnox-related deaths that have been reported in Australia in the past couple of years. As well as the deaths, there have been countless reports of people sleep driving (many resulting in serious injury), sleep cooking (again, several resulting in serious accidents and injury), sleep eating and sleep sex, among other strange parasomnias. In some cases, people have mixed Stilnox with alcohol (though many have drunk alcohol after taking a Stilnox, while in a sleepwalking state, including several non-drinkers), which tends to compound the effects, however there are many others, including my sister, who were taking the drug exactly as prescribed, and without alcohol, who have still experienced devastating reactions.
My family and I have set up a petition calling for a ban on Stilnox and other so-called 'z drugs' (or non-benzo hypnotics) - http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/stilnox/
If you click on the 'signatures' tab, you can scroll through some of the nearly 4000 signatures and comments we've received on the petition to date. Hundreds of people have detailed their own adverse reactions, and several people mentione loved ones who've died as a result of these dangerous drugs.
I would urge anyone concerned about the dangers of Stilnox to sign our petition (this can be done anonymously if you wish), and encourage your friends and family to consider signing as well. My family and I are extremely grateful for all the help we can get in trying to ensure that no other family has to go through what we've been through over the past few months.
As far as insomnia goes, there are many natural therapies that I believe can help greatly in treating insomnia, but if nothing is working, I'd suggest getting a referral to a sleep clinic to get to the bottom of what's causing the problem. Sleeping pills offer nothing more than a band-aid solution, and one that comes with serious, and sometimes deadly consequences.

I have been on Stilnox and it was great. Though if I didnt shut my eyes and go str8 to bed once I had it, i would hallucinate really badly.
The advise we give is -
Get your body into a sleep pattern . very dark when you slepe and when you awake get into the sun and get the bright light. This triggers your bodies natural sleep and sets the melatonin t right time/levels.
Are you on other medication that may be causing it?
Try phenergan or mersyndol night strength if you need sleep too and never use anything more then 3 nights in a row!!
Since ive gone off my Efexor my sleep is fantastic!!

I wouldnt suggest 'sleeping tablets', they are addictive and can be very easy to rely on.
Most good doctors wouldnt prescribe them. I told my friend that valium was addictive, and she said, 'no its not, my dads been on them for years!' See what I mean?:D

come spend a week at my work and we will see what addiction is all about. The excuses they come up with, and they make themselves believe it. (i mean for lost tablets and needing more sooner)
* I dropped them in the cats water
* I got fired and my boss took my bag
* I left them on the bus
* Someone robbed me/broke into my house and stole them
and it gets worse.
I have served and seen the worst of the worst and I am ovre it. People who r ruining their lives and those around them!

Jen, you could try Magnesium - it's a muscle and nerve relaxant. If you take it 40 mins before bed, you should find it quite helpful. I take 500g of Amino Acid Chelated magnesium. (If you take it with calcium supplements it negates the magnesium.)
And! it has the bonus of stopping that g-awful restless leg thing when you're trying to nod off.
Good luck and sweet dreams!

i am taking Blackmores Phytolife, and also Blackmores Evening Primrose Oil with Fish Oil capsules.. i had wondered at the effect of the Phytolife, seemed to make a difference at first, but now with the Primrose Oil too, i have had fewer hot flushes and night sweats, and those i still have are not as bad as they were..
Zen, I also take Phytolife - find it wonderful. I started when i was 40 because my mum went through hell with menopause so I thought I'd get in early. When I was about 46 I thought they probably weren't doing anything so I stopped buying them. Whoa Nellie! Within 2 weeks I started getting hot flushes but worse than that was the night sweats ... aaarrrggh! So straight back on to the Phytolife I went and I haven't suffered a twinge since. I recommend it to my friends and s-i-ls and all who have tried have found it helpful.
BTW it got a bit expensive buying the monthly packs, so I now buy it online in 90 tab bottles - works out around $12 a bottle. Yeehaw!
Thanks for that advice DD! ( shame we dont have a smart arse smiley):brow:
Yeh Di I got some Baileys and tried that for 3 nights to no avail.

Hi Jen, the one I take is a capsule ... Nature's Own - Magnesium Amino Acid Chelated 500mg
My niece got me on to it - she swears by it for helping with those nasty after-birth pains (she had baby number 4 last week). There are different types and doses for different problems. I have a web address for info on magnesium somewhere .... or you could google it :D
Really hope you can find a solution Jen, not sleeping is the pits.
thanks jillybeanz.. will google for $12, 90 tab bottles! was just thinking the other day, that i don't dare ever stop taking these pills now.. the hot flushes and night sweats were just awful.. i still get some of it, but nowhere near as bad as it was..
Going a bit of track here!
I sleep with a wet face washer over my face at night and with my flushes and the fan on it dries out pretty quick?
I was thinking about looking for a sleep mask or something that has a coolant inside it?
if your flushes/night sweats are still so bad, why don't you ditch the promensil, it's obviously not working, and try something else.. there's a few natural menopause preparations available... unless you have only started the promensil, these things do take a while to be effective..

It's easy to get addicted to sleeping tablets, been there
but if u take them when really necessary then they do their job.
unfortunately if u take 1 every night they stop having that effect after awhile so u go to 2
which is how u get addicted.Just don't take them every night.:)
Yeh thanks Zen I have been on Promensil for about 6 months now it has taken the edge of the daytime flushes.
But its not just the flushes that wake me up its my head thats why I was looking at alternative relaxant for sleeptime?

Hi Jilly
No I have no problems going to sleep but it is only for a short time?
Then become very restless heaps of dreams but I dont lay there worrying like I used to I just seem to doze not actually fall in to a deep sleep?
Oh yeah ... that sucks! I had that happen a while ago, I would drift straight off (snoring fit to wake the neighbours, eek! ... lucky Poss is tolerant!!) and wake about an hour later, unable to sleep. Urk. But for me that was when the restless leg thing kicked in and I couldn't get comfy. That's what the Magnesium knocked on the head. The first thing I noticed was how I slept so soundly (only going to loo once instead of 5 times!! ha ha) and woke up so good.
Gosh, I don't know Jen, it's a hard routine to break if your problem is not as simple as mine was. I feel for you.

well it's nothing major ... just a but weird to say
If I have trouble getting back to sleep, I concentrate on imagining myself wrapped in a pink fluffy cloud and I say to myself "love and peace" and my last thought is always "oh this will never work" and the next thing I know I'm waking up and it's morning.
Gee Jilly thats not weird good on you if you manage to have that mind control!

LOL - I don't think it's mind control (I suck at meditation ... bores me to death!) I don't know why it works. Maybe because it's relaxing, thinking about being wrapped up in a pink fluffy cloud and drwaing love and peace to yourself?

Hi Mum
is that the same type of person that you mentioned about staring into people eyes to get rid of headaches?

My mother in law was taking quarter of a tablet a night for ages, then she started having all these really seemingly unrelated, unexplainable symptoms i.e. bad taste in her mouth, rash and itchy skin, etc etc. All doctors, specialists etc told her could not be the stilnox. She stopped taking them and after a good six months of undiagnosed hell, the symptoms disappeared. I wouldnt recommend them.....
No different person I think a naturapath looks more at diet and different medicines.
The one that looks into your eyes is a bit different ( I think)
