we are renting a house and my sister has a little kitten that she can no longer have at her house and so i desperatley want to bring it to my house and look after it however im not sure whether our real estate will let us have one especially when i want it to be an inside cat! so just wondering if you are renting are you allowed to have pets or not?

Your lease should state whether or not you are allowed pets on the premises :yes:if not just call them and ask.

that you have to ask your agent not us, as I rent & am allowed my menagerie but others dont allow pets

I have rented many houses and always had pets, ( most times never told them thou shhhh),, just tell them it is a out side cat... ( and if u dont tell them and they do a inspection ohhhh that is the next door neighbours cat LMAO)

It's better to call the real estate agent and ask, although it should be on your lease agreement. When I moved to Brisbane, my sister and I were after a new place and we had to search high and low for a suitable place that would accommodate even one cat that was indoors. But that was townhouse/apartment type accommodation rather than houses.

I think it is more up to the owner and the agent reinforces what the owner wants- So they will probably have to put the request to the owner :) Good luck, I hope you are allowed pets there!

we're not allowed to have a dog, but we did have two cats and at one time we had a hamster. so i think it just depends. i honestly think cats would do more damage, but i guess our landlord thinks dogs do more..hope you can keep the cat!

Oh, so sorry amyamz...was hoping when I started reading this thread you would succeed! Have you ever rented from other places where you had pets? If so, could you obtain a reference from then, then prepare a letter stating your good record, provide the reference(s) and detail the measures you will take to ensure proper training and no damages? Perhaps if you are able to, you could also offer-up an animal damage deposit, and a promise to pay for any unforeseen damages not covered by the deposit? If you can't afford to offer an animal deposit, which is generally half a months rent here in Canada, then maybe try offering the above suggested letter, with a signed promised to cover any damages that may result when you move? If you try this and it works, just be sure that you agree on who will do the repairs, professionals or yourself? And either way, that the amount charged be reasonable in relation to the cost of any such repairs, not just a number the agent or owner can make up off the top of their heads. This clause should be in writing and signed by both parties. Trust me, I know this from experience.

As for my experiences, every place I've ever rented as been with the full knowledge that I had multiple cats and a large dog. However, in this place things went a bit weird. We rent a townhouse, managed and owned by a large firm, with individual managers hired for each complex or apartment building. The one we rented from said the pets would be no problem, but the day we went to sign the lease, we noticed that it said "no pets". We started to panic and called her on it, she p-shawed it and said not to worry as most others in the complex had pets too. She assured us things would be fine. We were still several days from physically moving in and when we did, we discovered that she had been renting to pet owners to piss her bosses off as she was quitting. So on moving day we spoke to the new manager, explained things, and got to stay after all. But about once a year, the current manager gets sick of their job and we have to start all over with a new one. The few times the company itself, or one of the string of managers, has decided to tell us to get rid of my pets or move, I say fine, but first they MUST give everyone else the exact same ultimatum. They have backed down every time. Of course for the absurd amount of rent we pay, and it goes up annually, they don't really want us to leave. Seven years later we are still here. (Mostly because we can't afford to save for a move. Even if we could, good luck finding a place as the housing prices in our city and its outlying areas are among the highest in the country. And of course, most do not accept pets.)

Anyway, I hope you try my suggestions. Good luck and be happy!

I recently rented a house and was told I could have my kitten (now a cat) but she could only be outside and sleep in the garage. She is an inside cat and I kept her inside the whole time I was renting and they didn't know a thing! Just when we had a inspection I took her over to mums house just in case they let her out. Don't let this discourage you, just break the rules a bit, they can't expect you to have a kitten outside! If you make sure the kitten doesn't climb curtains and jump on screen (water spray) they shouldn't suspect anything.

As much as I love them, I think dogs are the worst for rental properties.....yes they do smell and their claws scratch floorboards terribly.....not to mention damage to walls.
Cats seem an easier option and it is a house not a Strata unit.

i wanted to say we'd keep her outside but then let her in anyway but B/F wouldn't agree to signing the letter saying we cant have her in side so i guess will just have to wait till we move!
