My DP & I never live by our self so we never had go out and buy things for a house now we got a house, we only found out today we got the place ( i hoping it well go ahead)

What stuff should we get for the house

So far we got:
bed, washing machine, dinner plates, our clothes, DVD player, TV, my FMIL gave us 2 sofa, doonas, that all we got,

What other things do we need

So far i got a list of things we need

Fridge
Kitchen table and chairs

What else do we need. can anyone else add stuff to the list we need please

And dose anyone know who can help us, i cant really see us getting everything we need because we going to get a bond loan and the owner want 2 week + 1 week rent, we are moving in to the house on 25 June, plus our flatmate here want us to give him rent money too. I getting stress and worry that we wont have money for food and stuff.

Thanks everyone

Doesn't hurt to start out with only a few things Lisa. You will find out what you need as you go. Take it one step at a time.
I would go and see the local social security office and have a chat to them, they should be able to help a little.

DO you have saucepans etc? You can get a nice, reasonable starter set from places like House or KMart and they are fine to start off with.

Or, ask around your friends and family if anyone has anything they can lend or give you, lots of people are happy to pass on things when you are starting out (in my experience). Otherwise check out garage sales, you can often buy homewares cheaply. Or check out op shops like the Salvos and St Vinnies.

Have a look in the recipes forum here, or post a new thread asking for easy, cheap meal ideas.

Yes sorry, wasnt thinking. What Naomi says is good advice Lisa. I forgot about garage sales etc.

Ask around .... if you have family raid their cupboards! thats what I did. Nothing wrong with vinnies etc. You wont have everything you need / want str8 away but its makes it all more enjoyable and exciting when you do get something nice.

Congrats on the new abode and your up-coming wedding, Lisa!

I agree with Naomi and Cherie. Make yourselves a list (great fun!) and prioritise what you think you will need most. Try to keep within your budget and please don't be tempted to get into debt just to buy a lounge suite (for e.g.) ... or a stereo ... etc. I always get so miffed when i hear those "Buy now, don't pay for 36 months" ads because they don't tell you how much more you end up paying for stuff (double), and it saddles you with a debt that isn't worth it.

OK, sorry, got carried away. Climbing down from soapbox now ...

i didn't think of garage sales either, but that's a great idea! they sell ALOT here-from furniture to cookware to bedding..everything and so very cheap. i wouldn't get certain things right away-you can hold off on the kitchen table and just eat in the living room in the beginning..one step at a time. :) congrats btw! :)

That's a nice offer Linda....Lisa I'd love to help too because I'm downsizing at the moment and a lot is going to St. Vincents.....but postage would be prohibitive.
Have a wander around your local Vinnies....or have a chat to the Salvation Army.

Congratulations on getting the new home, Lisa!!

You can sit on the floor until you have furniture - just make sure you have the basics for food and warmth and it will fall in to place.

Remember also you may need bonds for electricity and gas (if it is required) and phone.

A fridge and cookware is probably the most important thing you need to get. As far as a kitchen table and chairs, you could probably get away with using an outdoor set for the time being. Plenty of people sell them at garage sales.

Security deposit for electricity connection is $80 if I remember rightly....they refund it when you either move or have been at your residence for over a year. If you have a pre-paid mobile phone, you could probably do without getting a landline installed for the time being and put it towards the cost of other things you do need. :)

You didn't mention whether you have any linen apart from the doona. So whack a sheet set on your list of stuff to get....and pillows too if you don't have them already...

sheets can be awfully expensive.. as you have a doona already, (have a cover for it?) just go for a bottom fitted sheet on it's own, pillow cases on their own too.. i never use a top sheet! just the doona..

I was thinking getting them from salvos, vinnies or garage sales.....not buying them from a store, bit too exxy for someone on a really tight budget.

dont forget a couple of towels as well.

WE have a place called disaster relief & they give away furniture that has been donated to people who desperatly need it. Its not flash or top of the range furniture but its still functional. Do you have anything like that near by?

Maybe join a local Freecycle group - you never know what people will be giving away, or you can ask if people have the stuff you need.

congratulations on getting the place. i recently moved in with my b/f and we had hardly anything to start with and we are still getting thigs and here and there that we need. as long as you have the necessities which sounds like you do thats enough to get you started then you can buy things as you can afford it.

Yaaay Lisa! I'm so happy for you!

Is this the same flatmate that you lost your dog because of? If so, tell him F*%^&&%$##! If your name is not on the rental agreement, bugger him. Well, only if you can do it without landing up in court where he can suck more money out you......

Everyone's suggestions here are great. Please don't be too proud to act on them. We were all that young and starting out once. (In my case, a few times. But you would be surprised how quickly you acquire stuff...then think, god I have to purge this junk!) And I'm pretty sure that most of us took all the freebies we could get. Personally speaking, if I were you right now, my priorities would be fridge, stove, dishes (mis-matched or not), pots & pans (again, mis-matched or not), bedding, couch/sofa to park on in the evenings, a bed (or a pull-out sofa-bed), kettle, some kind of shelving, and a dresser. None of it needs to be new or match, just at least somewhat sturdy! Remember, many ugly things can be painted or covered with fabric, such as pretty table cloths, curtains, shawls, nice sheets you acquire that don't fit the bed, and so on. For decoration, try the cheapie stores, new and used. Plus if you can get to the beach, look out for nice shells, rocks and driftwood that might look good in your new home.

By the way, are you allowed to have pets in the new place? When you are settled and can afford them I mean.

Hello Lisa...I have been away as I haven't been well but noticed this thread and wanted to come in and say that I have an almost new vacuum cleaner that you can have if you would like it?

We bought a new one specifically for pet hair but you are welcome to the other little one if you would like it?

Half the stuff in our house still doesn't match but it is functional and I refuse to get rid of it just yet. :hehe:

I was in your boat 2 years ago but we had a baby on top of all the other stresses.
Before we even started looking for a place to live on our own (were living with the ILs) we went to kmart and put a layby on. it was about $300 but at $10 a week or so we didnt even notice it.
I got our couch, 2 armchairs and coffee table from ebay for $100 total in new condition.
Op shops and charities are good also ask family and friends if they have any stuff they can give you.
Have a house warming party (ppl will prob bring presents)
take al the free stuff you can, you can always get rid of it later.
If its in your budget go to places like fantastic furnature or sydneys as they often have home starter kits where for around $2000 to $3000 you get everything from bed to tables to couch etc and sometimes they have a free tv in the deal. They should also be able to work out a payment plan so its not a big outlay.

If you need help working out what you need go to your parents place and room by room write down what they have. most of the stuff is pretty obvious but in the kitchen go through the cupboards and write stuff like strainer, jugs, tongs because these are things you dont think of untill you need them.

For most smaller items like cutting boards and mixing bowls go to the $2 dollar shops or the regect shop. Really really cheap and good quality.

Ok i think that is a little bit of information overload but as i am the first of my friends to move out of home i have helped them when they were in the same situationas you are now (so ive done the shopping and list makinmg about a million times)
PM me if you want a copy of the room by room list i have or if you want any other tips
