There have recently been reports that the Queensland Premier is wanting to introduce new laws to make it compulsory for ALL pets to be registered, micro-chipped and desexed (unless of course you are a proper registered breeder).
I think this is fantastic idea and will help stamp out unwanted animals, and put a stop to the disgusting practice of back yard breeding where ignorant and selfish people breed animals purely to make money and couldn't care less about the animal's welfare and well being :(
Also by making registering and micro-chipping compulsory it will allow authorities to track down the owners of mistreated and abandoned animals more easily which I hope will mean more prosecutions!
About time we started making animal welfare a priority....

I think it's a good move to be honest and one that should have been brought in a long time ago......RSPCA and AWL have been campaigning long and hard for it.

Yes Kay it has been a long time coming.
The current laws where people that harm animals finally are prosecuted and end up with nothing more than a slap on the wrist are a complete joke...high time the animals were put first!
i think NSW already has this? at least the council does where i live.. all animals have to be registered, and chipped, and desexed unless the owner is a registered breeder.. of course, it's not like we have 'animal police' checking on this...
edit: just googled.. and yes.. seems it is law here, has been for a while... http://www.ullavet.com.au/micrchip.html

Can't really see much point to it if it isn't being policed Zen...:dk:
Also if it has been implemented but not enforced makes me wonder how many owners have actually complied with the law?

i don't think it's like that here..unless it varies state to state, but i don't think my dog was micro chipped-my grandmother told me that he was when he moved to croatia with her though..their dogs NEED to be micro chipped there, but not here..they should do that here too. there's so many animals on the streets-mostly cats and some of them have collars on, but are blocks away from their own home..

I knew that NSW had it in place for a fair while....but I think it would take an extremely proactive council to ensure compliance. I don't know how they will police it without employing extra animal inspectors for random patrols of neighbourhoods etc. Not sure about other areas but the only time I have ever seen animal control in my area was when I called them about an injured dog with no ID or rego. :dk:

I think it is a great idea  The sooner they bring it in the better.
well, yes.. how would any council enforce this law, in any state? it would only come up if the animal was lost i guess.. it's one thing having a law....

Yes I was thinking this as well Zen.
I think it doesn't make much difference, the people that look after their pets and get them done, still will, and the people that don't give a shit, still won't..:(

I think it would be very easy to police and enforce if the powers that be are serious about animal welfare.
I am not sure about other areas, but our council conducts door to door checks to make sure all dogs are registered. I am sure it wouldn't be that much more difficult for them to carry a microchipping paddle to scan each dog (and cat, and cow and goat etc) with as they go to each house?
Also in order to get a discount on registration desexing certificates must be presented at the council office...this could be the same for all animals too.
Simple really when you think about it. I guess the whole point is that people have to be serious enough about being animal advocates that they use their voices (and votes) to force governments to do the right thing. :)
easy? no, i don't think so.. i agree with Lucyloo..
yes, it's like that here too, there's a discount.. i arrived at the council with lots of paperwork for my Archibald and Reginald.. i had to change their registration into my name, and into their new names and address.. poor girl got quite flustered.. :)

i remember when we moved to Bribie yrs ago the council used to have people come to the door checking all dogs were registered so yes they should do the same for microchipping

Yes Di..can't see why it can't all be checked at the same time..:dk:
And as for the people that 'don't give a shit'..then they should be made to 'give a shit'!
Either comply or lose the privilege that it is to be able to own an animal...that's right a privilege..some people seem to get a little confused and see it as their God given right....WRONG!
Then for those that are way too complacent..hit them where it hurts most people...in the hip pocket!

We have never had anyone knock on our door to check whether our pets are registered and we have lived here for nearly 12 years.

AGREEEEED!!!
people also need to realise if they have microchipped animals they need to update their details if anything changes.. the amount of dogs that go through work with wrong details or worse, no details at all is huge! Its one thing having them microchipped but they need to make sure that their details are linked to their pets microchip.

Yes, yes, yes....agree that all animals need this. Unfortunately there will always those that will have animals outside of the regulations and I guess that it it a trifle naive to think that things will change.
