Hi Girls, My little girl is on heat, (i think) I have never had a gil dog so I am only assuming as she is bleeding... How long are they on heat for, and as we would love her to become a MUMMY is there a certain time best for me to mate her, any advice would be great she is nearly 3 and would dearly love to allow her a litter before we get her fixed...Thanks in advance...

well Kekka i did'nt think it was real good fun when i went into labour LMAO
Mes i did'nt mean anything by what i said it's just that IMO only, all animals unless you are a registered breeder should be desexed because of all the unwanted & unloved pets around & the vet said to us once that so many people let their dogs breed & can't get owners for all the litters & so they hang onto the pups & then those pups have more pups & so it goes on (sorry i get on my soap box at times) but please don't take offence as i said it's just my opinion & probably should shut up at times :)

I hope you have more than one friend who wants a puppy....litters can be quite large, one dog was reported on news.com to have had 17 pups. :headh:
When MIL's chihuahua had pups, she had 7. So that was 7 homes to find - she only managed to find homes for four. She found homes for four but that still left her with 3 pups plus the bitch....she only recently found a home for one of the pups and they are now 7 years old!
Personally I think with so many dogs/cats in the pound, it is irresponsible to breed unless you are a registered breeder. There is a lot of cost involved with veterinary care of the pups, plus the bitch as well. Have you thought of how you will recoup the cost?? This is particularly a point if the pups will go to friends who may not be prepared to pay for the cost of rearing as you should keep the pups for at least 12 weeks to ensure they are properly socialised with people and other dogs.
I would think very carefully about it before deciding to breed her....go to the vet, get all the facts on how much it will cost for care of the pups and bitch after birth. You may get quite a shock. A friend of my mum's bred her boxer bitch (purebred) to a good boxer line and she barely broke after selling all her pups. :brow:

I agree with what both MOC & Stormy have said. Unless you are a registered breeder, she should be desexed. I won't say anymore other than if she were mine, I'd book her in now for when she has finished her cycle.

Good luck with whatever you choose Mes. My dog has never had a litter and has been fixed. I think she is happy enough.

I agree ....breeding is a big commitment and a very expensive one at that Mes. Think long and hard about it for both your sake and that of your dog and any future puppies...

I've had dog that had pups when I was a kid, but ever since then all our dogs and cats have been desexed so I can't remember what goes on when they are on heat, I'm a big advocate of desexing animals of both sexes other than that I won't tell you what to do, just that there are a lot of animals in shelters that need homes if your friends want a puppy.

Think really hard about it Linda.....and talk it over with the vet as I have been told (don't know if true or not) that Desexed animald who have had litters often suffer many hormonal problems in later years that require daily medication.

WOWWW.... MOC I didnt think u were rude at all, I appreciate your comments, I had never really thought about all the other stuff ... Yep Stormy I see your point too, am going to have a talk to hubby to see what he thinks with all this NEW info, maybe I was just being selfish as I would love her to have puppys, and we have 6 friends that would love one of her pups, but am thinking NO now, as I do agree there are alot of animals already out there that need homes, that is were we got Lizzy form the animal shelter, she was beaten and abused and when we got her at 7 months she would not even walk, she crawled on her belly (hence the name Lizzy , Like a lizard) she was totally flee ridden to the point her eyes were so infected one could not even open, but we fell in love with her, ohhh and she never barks we heard tht every time she did bark she was belted, anyhow way of track now... Thanks girls for all your advice I will really take it all on board,.
Well girls I think it is up to fate now, our bubby girl escaped, spoke to a few friends and they say that is normal when they are on heat, not sure how she got out, ( thinking DS left the gate unlatched when he took his bike in the fence), but noone is admitting to it here... Anyhow she has never left the yard we found her a few blocks away and there were 3 dogs around her,,,, I am telling u I wanted my girl to lose her virginty with my consent LMAO not being a hussy and running away. Is there anyway I can know if a bastard has got to her?......

Hey!!! I have two dogs, one female and one male. Female dogs are in heat every 6 months for about 1 month. When she is in heat she will give off a strong scent from her you know what, (lol) which will attract the male dogs. Once the dog gets impregnated then its only 9 weeks until you have PUPPIES!!
my dog was in heat in the beginning of June! and we are expecting pups at the end of August!! Im sooooooo excited!!!

still dont know if she is having puppies or not yet...
Have her nipples swelled at all?
If you found her real soon after she got out then it's highly improbable that she would be preggers.
