I love J.D. Robb and Jennifer Weiner. J.D. Robb writes about a homicide division that is set in the future, very interesting and easy to read. Jennifer Weiner is a wonderful writer and her characters are people that you can relate to. They made one of her books into a movie last year - "In Her Shoes". They are also making another one of her books into a movie, "Little Earthquakes".

My fabourite at the moment is Phillipa Gregory. She writes stories about Tudor England - her latest is the Constant Princess, which is about King Henry VIII's first wife, Katherine.

VC Andrews Flowers in the Attic is her most famous one.

I used to love VC Andrews when I was younger. I loved the series when she was still writting them. After she died and they had staff writers, I found the books weren't the same. Plus I felt I couldn't relate because they were about teenagers. I did get my niece hooked, so I was glad to have someone to pass my collections onto.

Patricia Cornwell, Agatha Christie, Margaret Atwood.

Used to like Bryce Courtenay but he's just getting really wordy and a bit repetitive.

I don't know, I'm sure there are others. How do you choose just one?

At the moment I'm really into Jeffrey Deaver and just can't enough of his books.

I've just finished Jodi Picoult's latest book " The Tenth Circle". I picked it from Target for under $20, a bargain considering it's a new one.

I also like Nicci French. Has anyone read any of hers? I prefer her to Patricia Cornwell.

I was soo addicted to v.c andrews also.. I loved her books. I think her family started writing some of them after she died.

Me too, I was addicted to Nancy Drew and I also read all of VC Andrew books in high school and passed them on to my sister.

I always change what I am reading - as a teen I loved Virginia Andrews and Stephen King. Now I tend to read whatever looks interesting. I am currently reading Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See which I am finding very interesting. It is a novel about chinese women. I just finished The Reading Group by Elizabeth Noble and I thought that was a really good read too - I managed to finish that one in a couple of days.

 The family are still writing her stories, working from note's she left some unfinished.

I try to read the whole series, They start as teenagers but by the end they are Grandparents, so its easier to relate as story gets along in series .

Gabriel Garcia-Marquez is a master. As are Milan Kundera and J.M. Coetzee. These guys are a little more intense than lazy summer reading usually goes, but I think it's all the more rewarding.

I love VC Andrews... I raced around getting every single novel and then I got a little turned off by the fact all the new ones had the same sort of plot. I still love reading them when I need something light and easy.

At the moment my favourite author is Alexandre Dumas. Just finished The Count of Monte Cristo. Other ones are Margaret Mitchell, Raymond E Feist, Jane Austin, JRR Tolkien, JK Rowling... and I best stop there or I'll go on forever!

Wow. Ya'll all read a number of the books I like. I LOVED VC Andrews in high school but have not read those in a while. I also really like Phillipa Gregory. I am into the Tudor England series, too, and its time to buy the next book!

I am obsessed with Harry Potter and read the new book on the first day it is out everytime. :)

I will really read about anything. I was a real big John Grisham fan but his books all started sounding the same. Same with Patricia Cornwell. I like Ken Follet...

I am currently in a true australian crime phase,The Snowtown Murders, The Jaidyn Leskie Murder, etc. Nothing scarier than a true crime novel.
My favourite authors are Janet Evanovich series, Dean Koontz (especially the older ones) and of course the Stephen King novels (can't beat em).
Read all the Patricia Cornwell novels and John Grisham but now find em all pretty much the same.
Because of insomnia I read about 3 books a week so I will just about read anything, but the above books I will read over and over again.

I love reading autobiographies as well. Do you have any favourites?

For sheer entertainment value I cant go past David Niven or Michael Caine. Ooh and Michael Crawfords was a good laugh too. I re-read all of them all the time.

For a good cry - Christopher Reeve.

Becase she is/was the coolest woman in the world - Katherine Hepburn.

Most recent one I read - which was really good and quite an eye opener - was Jacki Weaver's.

I also have everything ever written by Shirley MacLaine. She is a brilliant writer.

Pamela Stephensons books about hubby Billy Connolly are extremely good.

For life inspiration - Dirk Benedict (Battlestar Galactica and The A Team). Not only a talented writer but what he has done regarding his health is amazing.

Those that were disapointingly dull when I desperately wanted them to be good - James Mason and Michael Palin. James' - I must be 2/3rds thru it and he still hasnt started acting ! He is still talking about boarding school. And Michaels is nice and sweet ! Too nice and sweet. he wont bitch about anyone and has been with the same woman his whole life ! Its sweet - but doesnt make for a good autobiography ! They are both on my desk at work and I just sorta return to them everynow and then when in the mood.

Me too crashtestwoman re Aus crime!! I am waiting for my friend to finish reading The Snowtown Murders so I can have it !! And just finished Paul Kidds book on the History of Australian Seriel Killers. And it has made me want to find the many books he refers to in the bibliography.
I also have a huge book on the UKs Yorkshire Ripper called Wicked Beyond Belief thats on my pile of "still to read" beside my bed.

And I, like you, suffer chronic insomnia, so I get thru a fair few books.

I also usually have one by the bed, one near where I have breakfast in the morning, and one at work on the go as well !!

And yep - like you I will read just about anything I am given or find in $2 bookshops ! But certain faves I read over and over again.

My most prized book is my original 1978 edition of The Thorn Birds by Colleen McCullough. It has no front cover, is held together by tape, and is manhandled and re-read every year since 78 !!. Two years ago Colleen autographed it and suggested it was time for a new copy !!!!!LMAO

OH Kjoy, don't ever get rid of that book by Colleen. I just read ON/OFF by her and it was excellent.
If you like I can send you the Snowtown Murder book if you promise promise promise to send it back. I don't think I will be reading it again soon as I only just read it in August and it is quite hard going at times so requires a bit of inner stamina. Another one that was excelent was a book called MY BROTHERS KEEPER about the Milat family and the Belanglo State Forest killings. Man the life that that family lead is unbelieveable.
Anyway just email me with your details and I'll post it off for you. Okay.
Cheers

Debby.............couldn't agree more that the Cornwell and Grisham novels all feel the same now.
I first started a Dean Koontz novel about 8 years ago and have been hooked ever since.........try not to read him now unless on holidays as I find it hard to put the book down (last one two years ago and read in one very long sleepless night).

Oh what a lovely offer Debbie - I could possibly accept ! The pstage of a book from QLD to WA and back would make it so much. My pal here in Perth assures me she has nearly finished reading hers so I hope to get it off her soon ! But thanks so much for the offer !!
The one about Milat is listed in the Paul Kidd bibliography so I definitely have that on my list of ones to find (I go to a lot of second hand book stores and always have a list in my puse of stuff I am looking for). Yes most of that family should be in jail !

And yes ON/OFF was a brilliant read wasnt it. Colleens first forensic mystery novel and what a great job she did. I picked the right suspects but had no idea how big a twist that twist would be ! It blew my mind. An no - I will never get rid of the authographed ancient Thorn Birds - its so treasured to me. And inside it I have a pic of her while she was signing it. I didnt actually do it myself - I would dearly love to meet her. My dad actually took it with him for me on a writers trip to Norfolk Island and he met her and got the autograph for me. He told Colleen that I had had the book since I was a child !

Wow, seeing the name VC Andrews, brought back memories! I remember, I LOVED her Flowers in the Attic, and that whole series actually, I read the whole series twice. The movie, was SUCH a compact version of the book, I didnt' like the movie nearly as much, although the woman who played the grandmother was good in it.

I have read a couple of books by Jodi Piccoult, and I love her style. I could easily get into more of them. MY SISTERS KEEPER was excellent.
My favorite author though, Wally Lamb, doesn't seem to be getting anything out there, and he has only published 3 books. :(
She's Come Undone (you wouldn't believe for a second that it was being written by a man)
I Know This Much Is True..this book is very very long, but from the first page, I was enthralled and couldn't put it down. It still took me weeks to read it. But it was this book, that I found this author to be absolutely brilliant.
