View Full Version : Bras & breast cancer
I was just researching something & came across this article Are bra's good for us? (http://www.femail.com.au/bra.htm)on an Australian site. Made for interesting reading I thought.
What do you think? how many hours a day do you wear a bra? Me its usually 13hrs a day, might start taking it off when I get home now though.

Yep, apparently some bra companies (actually apparently quite afew if not most) spray some pretty damn harsh chemicals on them to make them feel womderful too.
I rarely wear bras.

I must be the odd one out here; I always wear a bra - well, with clothes anyway, only take it off at night when I go to bed. I don't find them uncomfortable at all.

I usually wear one most of the day until the kids have gone to bed and then I take it off as I know I won't be going outside again!
They don't bother me particularly though. I'm a B cup Mes in case you're wondering!

12C - I would of thought it was more uncomfortable for larger breasts to go bra- less, maybe if they fit properly?
Kekka, I don't wear them to bed though.

Can't say I have ever given it a thought, about 16 hours a day I wear mine. Fine and comfortable only take it off when I put my pj's on.
Ah, the bra, life's seat belt. I like to stay strapped in when its appropriate, but for comfort it comes off after a 10 hr + longer day; because of my odd size.
I do find it interesting that they've taken one aspect of the different lives of those in 3rd world countries and the western world and come to the conclusion that it's bra's that are likely to cause breast cancer. Yes they have 6 case studies, but that's hardly an appropriate test group size.

oh wow. This is something very interesting isn't it!
I get sudden sharp pains in the muscle ontop of my heart. I cant remember the name of it but from memory what causes it is something to do with pulling of muscles and nerves from my neck that run down my chest. Im supposed to do wall presses and stuff to reduce the pain.
On that website it says:
Want to prevent headaches or neck pain?
oIf a strap is so tight that it digs into the shoulder, it puts downward pressure on the cervical nerve. The cervical nerve runs from the neck to the shoulder and is an important component of the nerve system. Damaging it can cause frequent headaches, neck pain or numbness. Over time, it can cause pain that radiates from the shoulder all the way down the arms and into the hands. Tight bra straps are especially hazardous for full-busted women, but all women are susceptible.
It makes me wonder if all this time of wearing my bra straps tighter so I can get the ultimate cleavage it may be the cause of my chest pain?

Re the article, I agree with Maliss ... it's a bit of a long bow to make bras the link between breast cancer rates in developed and developing countries.
It's just as likely to be related to breast feeding rates. Women who breast feed have a lower incidence of breast cancer and one could assume breast feeding rates are higher in countries where there is less formula/money to buy formula available.
It seems a bit shallow to hang the bra as the culprit.

Yes, this is a known factor as is the age at which you have your first child: older mothers and women who do not have children are more at risk.
However these are only factors among other factors and I'm not suggesting anyone makes huge lifestyle decisions like haveing a baby based on reducing your breast cancer risk.
Re the point of women with less money breastfeeding and therefore not spending money on formula, interestingly in Australia the opposite is true - the higher the income level of the parents, the more likely the mother is to breastfeed.
Probably because higher income tends to mean higher education level and therefore better knowledge to make informed decisions and to access support services.
These are only generalisations based on statistics, of course.

Sorry, I wasn't stating this was the reason, I was illustrating how easy it is to attribute cause and effect and state it as fact, when it isn't necessarily the reason at all.
The point about formula is that formula is easily obtained in Australia (even for people on low incomes) which is not the case in developing nations. It's hardly accurate to compare low socioeconomic status in Australia with people living in abject poverty in third world countries.

I prefer sport bras if I have to wear them. I haven't ever worn a bra to bed only a few times i fell asleep fully dressed on the bed then I wake up and my boobs are all squished up and my under wire bra is all funked up LMAO so *fling* off goes the bra ASAP!

Naomi, I agree: studies need to be properly conducted not just loose connections stated as fact. you can do this with 2 obviously unrelated facts to see how ridiculous it is, eg there is less breast cancer in India. Women in India wear many bracelets. Therefore bracelets protect against breast cancer. of course they don't:blink:
Yes, in Australia formula is readily availabe and relatively cheap. However there are other social factors affecting breastfeeding rates, not just cost. And in Australia bottle feeding is safe, unlike 3rd world countries without clean running water, sterilising facilities etc.
I did some very interesting research one time into the unethical practices of Nestles and co in pushing bottle feeding onto developing countries, with horrific results.
But, I digress - sorry, everyone - go back to the topic of bras.
And if you really don't like wearing them, there are always alternative uses.........
