Do you go for the amonia based ones or the citrus based ones?

We have a glass shower cubicle and I find it a battle to keep it scum free.

Hi Floria,

I use OzKleen Shower Power. When the shower is dry, spray, wipe over and rinse. Really works in removing all the soap scum. Then a splash of good old bleach to rid it of any mould.

We don't have a shower recess only shower curtains which I just wash in the washing machine after spraying them with Preen or Exit Mould.

I think the cleaner I use is Ajax brand...I've thrown the bottle away, so can't tell you the exact name. It comes in a blue spray bottle anyway. I find it pretty good, one of the better cleaners I've used.

I hate scum on the glass doors, and have tried just about all I can think of to get rid of it. Thus far I have found the best thing to use is...car polish (don't laugh :P). You first have to get the glass really clean, and once it has dried, apply car polish - the water will 'bead' on the glass when taking a shower. I think it just makes cleaning much easier in future, however you have to reapply the polish every few months, or as needed.

Another thing to try is body washes, rather than caked soap - which is sure to leave behind muck on the screens. Also, rinse off the screens (aim the shower head at the glass) just prior to getting out, that way the scum doesn't get a chance to dry, as that's when its extra hard to get off.

For the outside of the cubicle, you can't go past undiluted vinegar (buy the cheap, no name white vinegar - only costs around a dollar) and newspaper. Makes glass sparkling clean!!! It may take a few times to get the glass gleaming because you first have to get rid of any glass cleaner residue. After that its a breeze!!

For the bath, sink and tiles (enamelled / glazed surfaces) borax is great. You can even wipe over once you have cleaned with ' bathroom cleaner. Gives a lovely 'polished' finish when buffed over with a dry, soft rag.

LOL almost sounds like I don't have anything better to do than clean, doesn't it LOL :) Sorry it turned into essay LOL but hope it helps!

P.s. one of those small, hand held steam cleaners works well get rid of mould in the shower - especially from the grout! Great for cleaning the grouting on floor tiles too!!

i use toothpaste to clean the glass in my shower...

its a mild abrasive and really gets the scum off.

i usually buy the cheap generic brands for the shower, just smear a little on a sponge and rub over the glass, rinse off well...
and the glass sparkles..and the bathroom smells minty fresh too :D

Heheh Mel you really know how to clean don't you? Not that there is anything wrong with that but I never had a clue until I met my OH's mum and found out that she was a cleaning freak!!! Got some good tips tho off of her :)

I use citrus base cleaners, also because I don't mind the smell of them as well as they clean better I find. In our old house we tried so many things to get this mould off the bottom of the shower and the only thing that would get rid of it was the Mr Muscle Orange cleaner. I don't know why, but it was the only one.

I know this is a gross q but how do you guys get rid of the hair in the plug hole/drain when its stuck on the other side (if you get what i mean?). Once (in my old shower) we pulled the plug up and the hair had wrapped around it and it was about 2 metres long... it was the foulest smelling thing I have ever smelt in my life and I was very close to puking (I don't get sick by these kinds of things normally). It was DISGUSTING!!!! It was like out of a horror movie LMAO

Oh the joys of cleaning....

A couple of things I have read around the place over the last couple of months.

I read a suggestion that to clean your shower recess try using preen or similar - the type you spray on clothes before washing. I have given this a go & it seems to work.

Another one was instead of buying 'toilet cleaner' use dishwashing liquid - the cheap generic brand. This can also used to clean other surfaces in your bathroom.

Also another tip for your shower - it does sound like a big job & I haven't testesd it either. Try using car wax/polish on the walls of your shower - the type you rub on & then polish off.

I used to when I had more time use car wax/polish on my fridge - it did work a treat.

These days I am flat out finding time to do any kind of housework.

There is also a site on the net flylady.com it has many ideas for making the housework much easier. I really must get into the swing of it soon...maybe next week. ;)

I use oven cleaner. It does an amazing job at removing soap scumb and residue with out any scrubbing involved. Actually, it's kind of gross to watch the dirt and grime just melt away, you get to see how dirty you really are. lol Seriously though, it does an awesome job! You just have to be sure to rinse it VERY well.
