has anyone put together one of their own and willing to give me some help to do this.I got some prices yesterday from the chemist and the kits are very expensive there, thought maybe I could get a lunch box and add a couple of items each week, however the kits were sealed so couldnt see the contents.Anyone bought a good one they can recommend? Thanks

i've got a little box in the car, it has band aids (different sized), bandage, small antiseptic, tweezers, scissors, panadol (tablets & liquid - as my son is too young for tablets),
can't remember what else is in mine (i did it myself)

Don't forget disposable gloves and contact St Johns because you can buy a disposable mouth guard (if you are ever needed to perform CPR), that is prepacked and very small.
Have a look here on their site (http://www.stjohnnbc.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=155)

Something you can use as a tourniquet or for binding snake bite; and square of cloth for a sling; saline solution; eyewash;antiseptic hand cleaner;roll of medical tape.

I always end up using mine for patching up injured wallabies.
But do not whatever you do forget SNAKE BANDAGES! They are different to normal crepe bandages and are good for sprains and stuff not just snake bites but they are lifesavers if there ever is a snake bite and I have been bitten... I know :P
I have some random things in mine too... needle and thread (you never know) definalty make sure you have saftey pins.
Demineralised water. Gravel rash's worst enemy... that and savlon.

I got a pre-packaged kit and added bits to it I thought were lacking. It almost explodes when I open it. :hehe:
I have a smaller one which has basics only in it which I put in my pack when we go hiking - bandaids, antiseptic, snake bite bandages, simple dry dressings, saline for irrigation, a few pairs of gloves, small Comfeel patches (awesome for blisters), single use ice packs, splinter removal needle, tweezers and an emergency thermal blanket. Come to think of it that's probably all I'd need in my car one too but I figure as soon as I take out some of the stuff that's in there, I'd be in a car accident and be unable to do what I needed to do. :dk:
Stormy, why don't you get a bigger bag?
Diana, what is the purpose for the first aid kit? General accidents or car collision related?

I just like the green box it came in. I was thinking of getting a tackle box type set up but then it would have more room than what I need in it and I might be tempted to fill it with goodness knows what. At least I know there's a limit to what I can fit in it so I'm not tempted to go bezerk with dressing products. :hehe:

Hi maliss,we have upgraded our ute after many years ,and everthing had expired or disintegrated with age in our old first aid box.I am only after something to keep in the car as we go to the bush for bbq's and down the beach(stings etc.) often on weekends.I think I shall leave car accidents alone, although I have done a few first aid courses the ambo. people can deal with that.I can and have done CPR and know how to position someone unconscious, all I am after is a basic kit really.Everyone has been so helpful.
I bought one from the St John's Ambulance service when I did my first aid course with them. I liked the size and what it came with and thought it was reasonable but they did give us a discount because we'd done the course.

A first aid kit, good idea. I never thought about putting one in a car. I will give this some thought now ....
Normally, I suggest clean - sterilised rags for a collison kit & way less band-aids... that's all really... of course, with a collision kit you generally don't use panadol and band-aids. :hehe:

i too should put one together.
i'll see how much it is to purchase one and if it is too pricey, i'll put one together too. thanks ladies!
if its for picnics and BBQs then
non-adhesive dressings - for cuts, grazes and burns that don't fit under a bandaid
stingoes - if it runs out you can use juice from bracken stalks on bull-ant bites
sterile splinter needles (or just plain needles so long as they're clean!)
saline
bandages (as everyone else has said esp pressure/snake bandages)
triangle bandage
scissors
adhesive tape
safety pins
paw paw ointment - tops for grazes as a barrier cream to keep bacteria out
and chocolate - always makes you feel better when something unexpected happens :)
