$125 for a 20 minute facial.
$36 for a leg wax
$70 for a bikini wax...
I question the relevance of beauty salons today when they charge this much.
What are your experiences?

I used to work in one.
Which is why I marvel at the pricelists.
Believe me, the profit margins are HUGE.

maybe find a cheaper one..do you live in a capitol city if so you could be doing heaps better on price, or just dont go if you feel its to pricey.
Have never felt the need to waste money on such things. Razor is far cheaper - DIY.
Facial $125 - utterly hilarious. Put some egg white on your face and cucumbers or tea bags on your eyes and have a very cheap rest for the same results.

I have been to a salon but only twice and we have a local one here it is fairly reasonable prices. I had a facial before my high school formal and got my eyelashes dyed (definatly not DIYing that) to try and help treat my pimples and again when I got back from uni holidays and my skin was totally out of whack and my pimples were REALLY bad to try and get rid of them.
I have also had a spa and massage paid for me by my BF one year for valentines.
We got my mum a really expensive facial/massage for her chrissy present last year. I really think it depends what they do as to if its worth it or not. She loved it, there was creams and massages and some weird special exfoliater for mums dry skin etc. But going to the salon is definatly not an everyday thing and some of them are a total rip off I mean I can wax my own underarms thankyou for the price of a $12 tub of wax not $70.
If we want massages BF and I go to the night markets and get 40 min ones for $20 by the chinese therapists there... just as good and WAY cheap!

LMAO my DH massages me for free :D
I have been to the salon a couple of times thanks to gift vouchers. For $100 I got.......complete body massage, aromatherapy facial, manicure, eyebrow wax. I know last time I got a leg wax it was only $25!!

I have Dermalogica facials once a month for $40.00
Under arm wax for $15.00
Eyebrow wax for $10.00
These seem to be standard prices for Central Coast are (Erina Fair to be exact) and I have also had the same things done here in the city (Sussex Street).
Considering you can have Microdermabrasion for $100 a pop (normally need 6 sessions) why anybody would pay $125 for a facial is beyond me, unless of course your maybe talking about people that live in Double Bay???
I asked my sister what price she pays for a facial and she pays $52 for some place at Paddington.

I have had the best massage from..http://www.stephaniessparetreat.com.au/index.php
I had the Signature Skin Treatment at $199.00
Plus the Hand Therapy at $85.00
Loved the hot stone massage on my back and neck the best. Facial was ok as was foot treatment. Yes it is an expensive little exercise..but It was just so relaxing and was well worth it.
I wanted to keep the fluffy dressing gown and slippers. LMAO
I have a friend who is a beauty therapist and she says it depends on the quality of the product so I suppose those prices would be using good quality products and you'd get your moey's worth. I've only had massages and beauty treatments from friends for free or at discount rates so I don't know the prices. If I knew I was going to have an amazing massage or facial and could afford it I think I would pay those prices just for the luxury.

And by chinese therapist you mean chinese traveller who knows nothing about massage and has been given a 5 minute lesson by the store owner, they make cheap labour for the shop compared to trained therapists, hence the cheap prices.
I've trained and worked in this (altho not practising anymore) i agree with the person who said HUGE profit margin! Some of the things i've seen are down right disgusting total rip offs and misleading.
It has its place though its not all about the product its a great way for women to just get out of the house or away from work kids stress watever and have some space to themselves to relax and sometimes its hard to keep up with all your grooming so you can just make an appointment and have someone else do it for you.

Ah, I know Stephanies well :) Classic case right there.

Alas! So not true.
I have yet to find any professional salon product on the current commercial Australian market that is 'quality' and value for money. I've worked with Ella Bache, Pevonia, Dermalogica, Thalgo, Payot...the list goes on. Yes, they smell nice, yes they cost $$$ (so they must be good, right?) but do they actually do what they're supposed to do? Nope. In fact, some of these products actually cause problems.
The comment about massage therapy has also reminded me of the standard of massage therapy in salons. As a massage therapist, I was required to undergo 500 of clinic training (not including theory) in college for my Cert IV and further training for my Diploma (so I could get into the health system). The theory was far more intensive than my DipBT. Yet I had girls straight out of beauty college giving 'back rubs' for the same price as the work I was asked to provide as therapeutic massage. Being paid a measly $18 an hour was hardly an incentive either.
But I digress. :D
If you want a quick back rub for $20 then go for it. Whatever makes you feel good. But if you want a specific type of treatment via massage then expect to pay accordingly. However, having said that, I would agree that the hourly rates I've seen around for massage therapy are horrendous.
Microdermabrasion and facials are two very different treatments with two very different outcomes so comparing them is like bringing your car in for a tyre change and ending up with a muffler.
The prices I initially quoted were from a suburban shopping centre venue. I can appreciate overheads are quite expensive in areas like this but not that expensive! :D

I think with me...it was just indulging the senses, so to speak. The massage was good..never cared much about what product they used.. I wasn't buying any.LMAO.

Do it at home I say, I only go to the salon if I'm gearing up for a really big event like a wedding and then it's usually only to have my eyebrows tidied and a pedicure.
Otherwise I cleanse my face and put on a moisturising mask (ranging from $20 - $50 bucks a tube depending on how fancy you want to get) comb leave in conditioner through my hair, wrap it in a towel and jump into a warm bath for about thirty minutes. Jump out, rinse off the remains of hair and face mask and put on body lotion of choice... same effect, about half the price.
I am willing to pay for a really good hot stone massage though... which reminds me I have a gift certificate for Aurora Spa that I have to use... :D

Over a hundred just for facial treatment? Better to invest in home products that can give you just the same affect!

It is all a huge rort and none of it really works. Better to spend your money on good food - fruit and veg, best for the skin and body.

Lol OW.
2Cat...It may, or may not be a rort..But it is very relaxing, and some people just use it as a treat. I really enjoyed my day at Sofitel, it was very luxurious and gave me one day I will remember without stress.
