May as well make this a separate thread as I would love to know a few things.......

My dream for a tattoo is to have grizzly bear footprints running down my thigh with two kids names in each but I have yet to get a straight answer as to what getting a tattoo is like - some say it hurts, some say it doesn't etc

So for those of you with tattoos what was the experience like for you?

If you went for one did you go back for more?

and Is a tattooist able to translate my ideas into a tatt or do they only do their designs?

I have one , and am going to get another just dont know when yet, I didnt find it that painful, well I have have kids so you will breeze thorugh it having 4 LMAO.

Tina ( supa) is a lover of tatts she will be able to give you heaps of info

Oh and yes it is jsut like buying anything you need to shop around and a good tattoist will take your ideas on board and work with you.

Good luck with it all.

Ive got on on my rib cage just under the boob area. The tattooist said that was the most painful spot but I breezed through it.Its kinda like a deep scratching feeling. Ive just finished designing my second one. Cant wait to get it. Make sure you think hard about your design and location.

sorry I am late in answering I am almost dead due to flu but saw the word tattoo & like an ant to honey I am here!

I LOVE tattoos if you search here you will find pics of mine or check out my blog in my sig :)

The noise is irritating, I take a book & read while being inked as it takes my focus off the noise & stops me mindless nattering away to the artist who is concentrating. Pain, well I liken it to being cat scratched or a mild cigarette burn. Its annoying but not painful KWIM (well for me anyway)

If you went for one did you go back for more? yes definately, I find them addicting I want many many more all that is stopping me is the $$$ atm but good things come to those who wait. My father is covered in them, they start on his forehead. My Mum also has 4

Is a tattooist able to translate my ideas into a tatt or do they only do their designs? hell yes! any good artist is anyway. My lower back job I took in a heap of pictures then sat with the artist saying I want something like this but also like that, with nice tribal work sorta like this but bigger. Gave him a $50 deposit for drawing up fee & went back a week later, loved the butterfly didnt like the tribal told him to make it more feminine went back another week later & it was perfect got my ink then. My ankle inks were reworked from other designs to get what I wanted, the writing I did myself on the computer & took with me, they loved it & we worked everything in together to get what Iwanted.

I am hoping to visit my artist again soon as I want the rest of my back done in a design that signifies how many years Bob & I have been married & that I can add to each year I know whatI want I just need him to draw it up & I can get soem done as I can afford it.

I also want a design on the top of my foot & another on the inside of my wrist & perhaps a toe ring too :) among other things :)

The pain is solely relevant to your own personal pain threshholds in my opinion. That and the actual location of the tatt and the amount of flesh covering the closest bone.

I have two - on the insides of my ankles. Both were an "annoying scratching" sensation. The larger one was located over a nerve and each time the nerve was hit my big toe went on its own personal journey and there was slightly more pain just over that point.

Yes tatt artists will use whatever design you bring in, or help you adapt several ideas into a design etc. For my second one I found the picture of the feather I needed but I wanted it to have a wave in it - rather than a curve. They scanned it into their computer and opened photoshop and played with some function that I have yet to discover in my own photo shop and viola - the wavey feather I was wanting!

Supa your list of wants sounds like mine - I want one on the top of my foot and one as a bracelet on my wrist - still in the midst of designing !!

I dont have any, i'm too temperamental to be sure i'll love it forever. I've been the supporting friend a few times at the parlour tho, none of my friends had trouble with the pain, some have turned out really cool and make me want one but i've a few friends with some dodge ones too.

Maybe you could get a temp tattoo of it painted on first to see how it will look in your home mirror and out of your head.

I believe it all depends on the the skin.. A friend of mine turning 50 wanted A Tat,, turned away by tattooist.. He actually gave a lot info on how the skin reacts.. Responsible explanation.. because of her skin thinning.. Now as we are approaching that time of life.. I know my skin is thinning I bruise so easily..Pls think about this .. Hey not being a prude just thinking how it looks

I actually think that's rubbish I got mine at 50 and no a lot of older women that have had it to
I felt it was like getting sliced with a knife but was oddly addicting I never flinched once
tattooist was really good and I took my own picture to him I am really pleased with it

Frannie go for it :yes:it's a good way to see in your 50th

I have thought of it but never done it. I could be easily persuaded. When my marriage ended I looked alot on the internet to find one that meant strength, but I never found one that quite hit the mark. Not being creative I could not think of one for myself so never did it. I would start with something small rather than go with something big for the first time. As for the noise, maybe you could plug in ear phones and listen to music or an audiobook.

go for it!

i have two. the first one i got when i was 17, it's on my lower back. it hurt more than my second one..i got my second one last year, it's a star on my wrist. DH and i both got stars together. :) it is an annoying feeling, just like you getting scratched by a cat or something..can't really describe it. the adrenaline rush is awesome and it makes you want more! :hehe: i want more. one on my side, one on the back of my neck, and not sure where else! :hehe: would love to get a matching one with my sister..if she's game! :D

So what are you saying rubbish to..A fact that certain skin thins out when we age..I only made a point.. If someone wants a tat fine go for it .. I just pointed out as we age the skin thins out.. And not a good look later.. We are entitled to an opium..

I have one on my right shoulder blade. its about 3" wide and 5" long. I got a scorpio symbol (kind of looks like an 'M' )
I figured my starsign was something that would never change and the shoulder blade is a place where i can show it if i want and cover if needed. Also because I cant see it everyday i dont et sick of it.

Realisticly its a needle puncturing the skin so its not a pain free thing however I found it to be more like scratching over sunburn. All up mine took 45mins from walk in to walk out and I have plans already for my next one. My theory is they are not addictive but once the first one is done its like well that wasnt too bad i can do it again.

Any tattooist can take your ideas and put them on you but a good one will say this will/wont work try this etc.

I got my first at 52, now I have three. I only have them on my arms where I can see them, and on places which won't get terribly wrinkly. They didn't hurt at all, but it depends what part of the body you have done. Personally I think if you are "mature", best not go for anything too over the top. I have seen some tattoos on mature women that were a big mistake.
Mine are all chinese symbols - cat, earth, moon.Quite tasteful.

LOL word for word how I explain my first one - I got the Libran symbol. I may change my fav music and actors (hmmmm Clooney across my chest ?????) but no matter what I will always be a Libran!

I had a couple done I'm on my right arm way back when I was 19, and it was'nt painful, until the needle was going up the arm. It was okay when it went down, or left or right, it was just when it was going up. Other than that, there was no prob. It was just like there was a zipper in my arm, and it was a little itchy.

I have one on my lower back, and I found it REALLY painful. I suppose everyone must feel it differently, but I found it excruciating and almost unbearable, especially because you have to just sit still and let it happen! It took around 3 hours, and I was clinging to the bench so tightly the whole time with all my muscles that I could barely move for days afterwards.

Obviously other people have had different experiences, but that was mine :) The guy said "see you soon for your next one - they're addictive", and all I could think was "I DON'T THINK SO!!!!" Never again! :D I love the one I've got, but no more thanks!! :D

i thought my lower back tattoo hurt more than the one on my wrist. my wrist kind of tickled and it felt like someone was giving me a paper cut numerous times, but that was nothing compared to the one on my back.

:) Hi Platinum... I got my first tatt when I was 41, no reason, just wanted to, and I have never regretted it.
I chose my tattoo place from word of mouth and went there a week before just to check it out, for cleaniness and professionalism and just to ask 99 questions, or there abouts.
I was very impressed how hygenic the whole place looked and how professional the artists were.

So the next week I got some courage from deep down and had my tattoo done, on my lower ankle, I got a rose with leaves on a vine either side, I had to walk when completed with glad wrap around my ankle to stop the bleeding. I put panteham ( spelling ? ) on my tatto twice a day and kept it out of a bath and the pool for a week. In the warmer months, I always put sunscreen on it, as they say they will fade, like clothes if sunblock isnt used.

I now have two tattoos, one on the other ankle, a butterfly with angel dust.

I recommend to have a tattoo just take care of it and it will look sexy for ever. :jump:

i've seen girls have them done on their thighs and i like the look. and on the back of their calf too. this one lady had a butterfly on her calf and when i came closer it was a tattoo! :hehe: it looked so good and so real. :)

i know i tried drawing it, but it was too sketchy and we're going back 3 years now.
it would have her back facing you and you wouldn't really be able to see her face. her arms up, flowing clothes, halo, her head to the side and tucked almost under her arm (kind of how little kids hug), etc.

I have two piercings in the top of my ear, the cartilage. I really didn't find it painful. It was like a hard pinch, as if you had caught it in something then it was gone. It hurt HEAPS more a week later when it was a little infected and I banged it. The actual piercing itself didn't hurt. They healed really fast too 6 weeks and I could change the earing and everything!
