the first week i started prac - 2 weeks ago on the Monday i got home & my big toe on my right foot was so sore, i put up with it thinking i just knocked it during the night but then around wednesday it was worse all puffed up. On Friday i left after Lunch to go to the doctors as it was so infected & i held out all week i just couldn't do it any more.
You should have seen it......... so swollen.
I was put on Antibiotics & told i might lose the toe nail.
I had to soak it in hot water (as hot as i could stand) with salt in it.
by Sunday morning i had to pop the lump it was killing.
It settled down this week, i have now finished my tablets.
NOW it's throbbing again & i'm going to lose the nail as it's lifted away from the cuticle but OMg the pain it's killing me. i can't bend my toe near the nail as it kills.
the base of the nail looks like it's torn the skin.
So looks like another trip tothe doctors tomorrow.
I really feel like cutting my toe off.
I took a strong pain killer & it's done nothing

OMG. Sounds terrible. Hopefully you loose the current nail and grow a new one it will be total pain relief for you. But even then Ouchy. Ouchy.

Never had to lose a nail, so I don't know what suffering you are going through.....does it help to keep it elevated?
Hope you can see the Doctor tomorrow.

Whats caused it? Was it and ingrown toe nail gone horribly infected or was it a fungal infection of something? Sounds very raw and painful either way - hope it settles down and heals quickly for you :comfort:

Sounds very familiar...my other half would identify with you. He's been on antibiotics, had the wedge resection and still had problems. I reckon it would be better if I just pulled the jolly nail off for him but he won't let me do it. Can't think why. :hehe:

hope you are on the mend soon :comfort:
Mel can I just saw ewww and cool! All at the same time?
But I hope that it settles its self down for you soon. It sounds very painful. Can you take any neurofen/panafen/ibuprofen type pain killer?
BF had both big toes operated on to bring his ingrown toenails into line.

i think it was the shoes i wore for the first 4 days of prac. On the Thursday night i went & got actual nursing shoes & it's been much more comfortable after that. I think the other shoes were to hard & i think my foot moved too far forward to the edge of the shoe as with the nurses shoes they are soft leather & i got fitted at the Athletes Foot so they are heaps better
In turn it caused an infection as it pushed the toe nail back

I would reccomend seeing a podiatrist to deal with it if you are able to. I had heard so many horror stories about the way that gp's treat toenails. My DP and I were both treated for ingrown toenails. He by a GP and me by a Podiatrist. He spent 2 days on bed rest with Panadeine forte and I didn't need a thing, on a pain scale I was literally a 0 due to the different procedure :)

Ooohhh No! There is nothing worse than a toe so sore, just kicking a toe is bad enough, can't imagine what you're going through.
Let's hope it gets better soon.
