Pretty scary, lucky she woke up when she did. I guess it's a timely reminder about heater safety and to make sure smoke detectors are maintained.

Actually, it surprises me that people still leave heaters going overnight and near bedding - how many times does this have to happen before people realise it's an issue?

In NSW at least, I know it's now mandatory for all residences to have smoke detectors - owners should have them installed if you are renting. We got a call a few weeks ago from our REA making sure we have them.

We have 2 smoke alarms, one downstairs in the laundy which is right under mine and Gav's bedroom and another one in the hallway down near our bedrooms. I don't know if the one downstairs works, have never had smoke down there to try it thank god. But I know the one in the hallway works, I set it off quite regulary with my cooking LMAO LMAO LMAO

That is scary, it amazes me too that people never seem to learn. I'm scared of our heater..but I just hate gas LOL I would never leave any heater on unattended, and hear flammable material

We were a bit slack with smoke alarms and replacing batteries, thank god we never needed them. Last year after all the tragic fire deaths the owner came and installed hard wired smoke alarms, so we don't need to worry now.

Yeah ours are mains connected too - the house we rent is quite new so they had them installed during building.

Angie, we set our downstairs ones off every time we cook sausages on the grill or french toast in a fry pan. It is SO annoying but at least we know they work (they're SO LOUD).

We dont even have smoke alarms...the realestate is trying to get the landlord to install them but they wont be law until next year or something...but I dont use heaters and I always make sure things are turned off. And after I set fire to the kitchen curtains when I was about 19 I have never cooked under a window again! :Hehe:

I needed one last night! Summer was heating up a donut to have with ice cream for dessert and she put it in the Mickie for 2 minutes! when it came out hard as rock she thought it was still frozen so put it in for another minute...Smoke everywhere! Lucky it didn't actually catch on fire...she had it sitting on a paper towel and I chucked it in the sink and drowned it in water.

Having a child care center in my home, I have to have a smoke detector on all 3 levels of my house. We do fire & torado drills. One day Judy ( state licensing) came out for a surprise visit. She asks the children different questions. 1 of the questions was " What does it mean when the smoke alarm goes off." 1 little 4 year old boy pipes up with " It means Joann is cooking". Out of the mouths of babes.

We have them in every room except the kitchen (ihave my reason for that) but now that we have added on to the house the law here is the smoke alarms have to be updated to another type so they will not pass our building inspection untill we replace them all
