Ok talking about banana's...I heard on the news they are thinking of importing them...wouldn't they still be expensive if we have to pay for imports?...

And apart from that I think we need to try and support our farmers that have lost alot in the cyclone...at least while we have our banana's on sale the farmers are getting paid.

What do you think?

Me too, they are great to give to the kids and they help fill them up. But I couldn't imagine imported banana's being less than what we are asked to pay now...and my point of view is if we stop buying from local suppliers how the hell are they suppose to get back on their feet!...we have yummy bananas...

I think the prices have dropped anyways of late, at least here they have but still at $6 a kg I wont buy them. Might have a look next week with shopping but I wouldn't buy imported ones either

$6/kilo?? Not a chance in Sydney, still seeing them for $10+/kilo, the only difference being that the bananas are of a better quality than they were a few weeks ago.

Importing bananas would be cheaper than the prices we have been paying but I don't understand why they are considering this now, when the reasons we weren't importing them before (disease risk etc) are still there. In fact wouldn't it be more important to guard against that while the banana farmers (?is that what they are) are re-establishing new crops? Surely there will be new crops coming up within the year? It's not like they aren't ever going to grow new bananas in Australia.

I guess it depends on where they are coming from, and the disease risk. It's going to be years before we see Bananas back the way they used to be, most of the farmers have to start from scratch all over again.

The farmers are still only getting 30c a kilo for them and being sold for over $10...how on earth is that fair!

I would love to support the aussie growers, but anything over $3kg is just too much when I need to buy so many

i agree with melly .. if the imports are cheap, i'll buy them. i'd love to support our own, but not at those prices.

I think they just shouldn't import any...

i agree on one hand, but then i dont think it's fair to hold a nation to ransom with $12/kilo prices. (ok, so holding the nation to ransom is a little extreme but still) ..

Yeah it's hard isn't it...I have 5 kids and we all love bananas...especially the little ones...I cant afford to pay 10 or 12 $ a kilo...but I dont know if I'd buy the imported ones...

Another things are they going to let us know which ones are imported?

i thought it was law now that they (being supermarkets) had to display where the fruit had come from. i know woolies out here does. i try to buy OZ when i can, but sometimes, as you well understand, it has to come down to price ..

i need to get 2kilos of bananas at a time, and i try to stretch them out and make other things with them too, so ifthey really are going to be as cheap as $3 (which in the past i have whinged about) i will buy them.

LOL I remember whinging about the price of bannas when they got to $4 a kg, next time they are at that price, dont think i will be complaining anymore.

I've never seen in stores here them mentioning if they are imported or not.

How many of us still are buying bananas anway.. if not many are, wouldnt they do best to drop the prices so people can and will buy them?

I only buy banana's if they are cheaper...our vegi shop sometimes has them for $2.50kg...thats when I buy them, but they never advertise and you have to be there at the right time.
Our supermarkets always seem to sell their bananas no matter what price they are...unless they only half stack them so it looks like people are buying...

Our local markets have some but OMG I seen some one week and they were sooo dodgy looking and green, like completely green so I passed on them.

I agree that $12 a kg is a terrible price..but we really need to stop and get this whole thing into perspective..we hardly think twice about paying over $3 for a packet of potato crisps...which weigh about 200g times that by 5 to get 1kg..and it works out alot more than what they are asking for bananas..maybe we just have to prioritise a little until things get back to normal for our farmers. Just a thought..tell me to pull my head in if you like :)

good point made by Patricia, I don't buy chips or lollies or bicky and the such, but I do have to make sure there is coke and coffee and milk. Yes maybe we should sacrifice something not so healthy to buy something healthy

1kg of chips.. you would get alot of chips for that though. But I do see your point Patricia.

Well said Patricia...but I dont buy chips either...I used to mind you but I use to buy that big box for $10.00...the 60 packet box from Big W...but I stopped buying that because the kids stopped taking fruit to school because they weren't fitting fruit and chips in at lunch time...so I took away the chips...now they have time to eat their fruit...

I'm not really a mean mum...that just sounded mean though didn't it?

We don't have chips or much junk (do arrowroot biscuits count?) but for me it's more about ... we buy x amount of fruit, and I'd be more likely to buy extra pears or apples or mandis, just because they are all far cheaper than bananas right now. Like I said, we do buy a few each week, just not as many as we were when they were $2-3/kilo. It's not just about wanting to support the farmers (lets face it, they aren't seeing many of those $$ compared to the retailers), but also about me being able to get more for my $$. We eat a lot of fruit so I'd rather buy the other cheaper varieties and save a little money.

I'd probably end up buying imported bananas if they brought the price down, depending on the fruit. Why would I buy manky little spotty Australian bananas for $10, when I could get nicer fruit, cheaper, that's imported. (Gosh I feel so unAustralian saying that).

Arrowroots dont count...we buy them everyweek...if the girls want something sweet I will put icing sugar and 100&1000s on them. Logan's into peaches at the moment...so I've been buying the tins...he loves them, will eat a whole tin to himself...and they are the big tins to feed the whole family! Actually I dont know really if it's the kids missing the banana's or me...I know Logan wants them everytime he see them shopping...but that's probably 'cause nana was one of his first word!....

i see your point patricia, but i tend to think it's not a realistic point. for one bag of chips, all my kids get to have some, plus us, for $3 of bananas, we'd get maybe 2 perhaps 3 ..

sorry, missed this page. i dont think being realistic about $$ and how far it doesnt go to feed the family is being unaustralian, i think the supermarkets are more un-aussie and counting on ppl to feel just that way so they buy into the $10-$12/kg thing.

i hit the farmers markets as often as i can, i stock up on small apples, oranges, mandies, pears and if there is other fruit in season i get it. i buy strawberries as a treat for mine when they're cheap enough. we also have alot of tinned fruit. oh and i still buy the big box of chips, i've found my kids eat both so it works for us.
