MSG Query

As most of you know - I am currently in China but I was eating a packet of chips the other day and happened to glance at the ingredients and noticed that MSG was in it. This did not come as a surprise to me as you can buy MSG in packets about the same size as rice in supermarkets so presumably it is in everything here. Does anyone know what the effects of MSG are and why it was banned in the west?

well my mum has very vivid dreams when she eats MSG and i mean vivid like she was on something, she keeps well away now

I know it can affect people with asthma. If you do a google you will find lots of info.
