View Full Version : Stuck in the Flood

My parents have a small vacation home in the mountains of New York. Dh and I can't afford fancy vacations due to my medical bills. So we were going to go up there next week. My parents went up this week to open it up and get it ready. Well, I don't know if anyone has heard but the east coast here has been hit by a lot of rain this past week. My parents are now stuck in their home. The yard has just over a meter of water high in it. The road 30 meters before their home has broke and split and isn't passable. The road 50 meters passed them has completely washed out where the bridge used to be. There is no power and the phones are in and out and they have to boil the water that comes from their water tank from the mountain streams. They've been told by the neighbor who hiked down from the house 20 meters up that he heard the local town has water over the roofs of cars. Mom just keeps seeing helicopters flying over head.
Yesterday my dad saw in what is normally a trickling stream across from his house a large shed being taken down the stream. He said the huge trees that are being carried away are unbelievable. The neighbor can't find his tractor and thinks the water has taken it.
I just wanted to share my family news with you all. And if you are a praying person, I'd appreciate a small prayer for my parents safety. Thanks.
I just wanted to add that the photo next to my name is taken at the pond at the top of my parents road during calmer times.
Oh my goodness Christine! your poor parents & everyone else who lives in the area. Is it still raining now or has it stopped?

Christine, how worrying for you! I'm glad you are still able to be in contact with them. Has the rain stopped now? Will the water start to subside soon? Of course I will say a prayer for your family. Take care ... I hope they can get out soon.

Thank you all for your thoughts. Sharing it with you all does help. The rain stopped late last night (except for the passing thunderstorms which have caused my mom to say a few curse words I've not heard her say before!) They believe the rivers should crest in 2 days ... After that the water should go down. We just worry about how much higher the water will be before it finally does crest. The power stays off but their phones come and go. I spoke to Mom tonight and since the rains have stopped she is feeling calmer but apprehensive about the cresting river. I must say, on one hand I feel relieved that this didn't happen next week when we'd be up there with our 3 year old son. ON the other hand I feel horrible that it's happening to my parents. They are 68 years old. Thanks for your thoughts and I'll share any news I hear as soon as I get some.

I am sending 'safe' vibes to them too. I've seen this on TV but it's very hard to get the magnitude unless you're there.
They are safe and will stay that way. Don't forget to remind your mother about her language when things settle down. That should give you all a good giggle.
Christine, do hope your family stay safe. I did see on the news tonight about the dreadful floods over there. Thinking of you and sending positive vibes.

I just wanted to give you all an brief update. One of my sisters got to speak to my parents tonight before their phone went dead again. The worst is over!!:) The river has crested and now they just need the water to go down. The government sent in national guard troops to the town "Walton" and two of them were able to hike into my parents area. My parents at least have ice now. They've been told the power will be off for at least 2 weeks. Mom is ready to come home. Luckily they had bought lots of food (boxed things) because they had intended on us being there. So they won't run out of food for quite a while and they can cook with propane. Mom has heard that someone has a backhoe and is trying to fix up an escape route. The problem is even if they can get off their road each road after that will be another problem. Anyway, my parents are ok. Just very tired and Mom's nerves sound shot. But they are luckier than many. I'm going to try to attach a web address of a local paper up there who has posted photos. Just copy the address and paste it and it should work. Any of the photos of "Walton" are the town about 10 min. from where my parents are.

With any luck mom and dad will be home by July 4th. !
