I brought a few granny smith apples yesterday for myself, gotta eat more helthy  anyways, last night I had one and OMG it was divine :d: :d: but now I'm half way through another one and ick its yuk, the flesh stuff is all ick tasting, it kinda feels soft and powdery, although I know its not powder. The one last night was firm and crunchy and juicy and yum and this is the complete opposite. I dont really want to eat it but I dont want to waste it either, apples are expensive up here. Anyways does anyone know what its from? Like is it over ripe or something and how do I avoid getting apples like it?

You know, I am glad you brought this up, I meant to the other week actually! :)

It happened with me but it was a red delicious. Some of them were crunchy and wonderful but a few were funny feeling. Almost exactly as you describe it! I hope someone knows why!

And can you tell them from the others?

Oh, but I do love a good, crisp Granny Smith, too. Now I want one!! :)

Oh Angie so agree, nothing worse...I was lucky last week and got 6 apples and 5 were really good and one average...

Bit of pot luck really, do you do the "flick test" on your apples?

I think that chalky feeling happens when the apples are a bit past their best. I don't really like apples much, I eat them in winter because there's not much variety of fruit and I don't really like Australian oranges (bad I know - I buy imported ones when they're available).

I squeeze them...really hard...bad I know for the next person who might just pick them up and buy...but I HATE apples that arent' crisp. When the fruit isn't at it's best I buy the tin stuff...we all love it and most of the time it tastes better than fresh...'cause by the time we buy fresh in the supermarket it isn't really fresh....

Angie, think it is just luck of the draw, when I moved up here I was sooooo....
bored I did an apple packing season (I will never be that bored again) the apples we exported were beautiful, and all the rejects were what they sell to us on the local markets, they held apples back and kept them in C.A (chemical Atmosphere) and we packed them at the end of the season, as you know apples are all picked at the same time so these apples in C.A are just as old and kept in coolstore, so once they hit room temp they deterate fast, If Granny smith even have a hint of light colour don't buy them:)

eww I hate the idea of chemical atmosphere. I stopped buying fruit at the supermarket when I read an article about it. I know they use it everywhere but the idea of the fruit just sitting there for weeks in some chemical to keep it fresh grosses me out.

Me to Naomi, we have our own fruit trees, here and grow our own veges at least I know what I am eating :)

Oh, wow. I had no idea that they did that to fruit! That really upsets me! Well, we have a farmers market here during the summer. I will be sure to buy my fruit there while I can.

Its just a shame...fruit does not grow in Breckenridge so there aren't many choices other than the supermarket.

I didn't see what the flick test was...anyone know?

I'm sure I read or saw on the news that they keep them in storage for something like 6-18months sometimes before being put on the shelves. We think we are doing the right thing buying fresh fruit and vegies but sadly that is not really the case when it comes to the major supermarkets.

I love granny smiths, I put them in the fridge because I like mine cold.

Hailing from Apple capitol state Im not sure about the powdery stuff on the apples. Could be that they were in storage for too long. Washington Apples are picked August-October I believe. Us unfortunate souls get the stored apples first and the fresh stuff is exported.
Some really yummy varieties are Golden Crisp, Pink Lady (My favorite), Brauburn(SP)

I am so fussy when I pick my apples, I bought 6 granny smith ones the other day and spent about 10 minutes just picking them out. It was worth it though as they are so yummy.
