How do you clean your trays? I am a member of a US cat forum and recent topic of conversation is that one member uses their dishwasher to clean their cats litter trays. I'm not sure if she uses the same dishwasher to do household dishes but I know if I were a visitor at her place I would never eat or drink there.

I scoop my trays at least twice a day. Trays get washed once a week, water and anti bacterial type stuff and left out in sun to dry. I have two sets of trays so they are rotated each week.

Oh that is gross if she does use the same dishwasher. I wouldn't want to eat there either!!!

I scoop out all the chunky bits each day, and then change over the litter once a week or more often if needed. I also wash out the trays, with hot water and detergent and then rinse with disenfectant.

Only rarely do my cats use the litter tray, preferring to go when they are outside, but I keep it in the house incase they need it at night or if they are left in during the day.

I've got my hands over my ears saying *lalalalala*. Oh, I didn't need to hear that - the DISHWASHER??? Ewwww. We love our cats, adore them. But there are definite lines of demarcation - they have their own cutlery and tupperware. Their washing up is done separately, there is no cross contamination .... I scoop their tray daily, it gets cleaned totally (emptied and washed up) two or three times a week - hot water and bleach.

I'm with you Naomi (or is that Imoan....still crack up over that one).

I won't even use our normal dishcloth on the cat's bowls. They have their own dishcloth and I wash their bowls last of all, not to cross contaminate anything.

I buy those cat litter liners, makes cleaning up SO much easier and less smelly come time to washing the tray. :)

I wouldnt even think about putting the tray in the dishwasher! Eeeek! The laundry sink is where I wash it.

:eww: :faint: :O

That is just disgusting, why would you even admit that to people? I don't think I would be keen on visiting her either, imagine the other disgusting things.. :eww:

I'm a little slack with the scooping. I only have 2 largish litter trays for 4 cats, so I just completely change every 2nd day. I wash them out with disinfectant and a toilet brush for scrubbing. Use a separate mop and broom for cleaning the area at each change.
