Chocolate-coated ice-creams have been taken off Coles and Bi-Lo supermarket shelves following concerns they may contain plastic fragments.

The supermarket chains have recalled four batches of the Savings and Bi-Lo brand "Choc/coat Vanilla" ice-creams (10 pack) after the risk of plastic contamination was discovered.

"There was a temporary fault in the manufacturing process and as soon as we were made aware of it we issued a recall of the affected products," a supermarket spokeswoman said.

"There's a risk that there may be plastic in some of the batches, so just to be safe we've recalled all of them."

The affected products were sold in Coles and Bi-Lo stores nationally and via Coles online.

The ice-creams can be identified in Bi-Lo stores as Bi-Lo Choc Coated Ice Creams 10 pack 865 mL, APN: 9310645010519. Best Before: 01 FEB 2007, 17 MAR 2007 and 18 MAR 2007.

In Coles, the ice-creams are identified as Savings Choc Coated Ice Creams 10 pack 750 mL, APN: 9300601359813, Best Before: 09 AUG 2006.
