Thought I'd run a poll and see what most people chose to do when they went on holidays with their pets.

We thought it would be a good idea once when we went on holidays to leave Max, our labrador at our son's house so he could keep Kane, his labrador company, but we recieved a phone call halfway into our holiday to tell us that both the dogs had a great time removing the washing off the line and ripping it up. So we never left him there again. Much safer at the boarding kennel! :eww:

If we go to our shack, which we mostly do on holidays we take our pets. But when we go to the mainland on holiday we get my dad to look after them!

We usually get someone to housesit and look after the cats. That way, they have company. It's usually DH's sister, as she knows the cats and they know and are comfortable with her.

It depends on where we are going.

Some places we go to, we can take the dogs.

Nudge stays home & my sister looks after him.

If we go interstate or to places where we can't have the dogs, then they all stay home and my sister looks after them for us.

We used to get my parents to mind our two dogs; we have a few little feathered friends with us now, so we spend our holidays at home :)

Wow this is an old thread! Funnily enough though - we are going away in August/September and our usual house/pet-sitter (SIL) is coming with us and our back up (MIL) is also coming with us so we're kind of considering options at the moment. Not keen on putting the boys into a cattery because Nik would already be so stressed with us being away that to take him out of his familiar environment would probably devastate him :( so we're looking into hiring someone who will come to our house each day and feed/clean/play with them. It breaks my heart to leave them, especially when we're going overseas (my first cat was hit by a car and died while we were overseas in 2000 which shattered me. Now both cats are indoors only but I still worry when we're away).

I'd offer Naomi but Lockyer Valley (in QLD) is kind of a long commute to Sydney LOL

If I cant get a housesitter, someone I know and trust we have separate holidays otherwise we stay at home I hate leaving them. One of my cats is a very finicky eater wants something different on the menu evey day and you have to serve it in his bowl spoon by spoon otherwise he refuses to eat.
So I really could not expect someone to pander to his needs.

when we went to goldcoast a few years ago george and millie, the birds, when my mums and then mysister picked them up and took them up the mountain. she said they had a great time and couldn't believe how much they loved their bath. when we went away for 3 days i just left them with mum. she said they were very quiet until they heard my car pull, they squarked at me all the way home, i was so in trouble. now we have the mice i can't find anyone willing. why don't people like mice?:puppy: :dog: :puppy: :dog: :puppy: :fairy: :fairy:

We have a house sitter we actually pay... it's the same price as a boarding kennel so I'd prefer to keep them in their environment. Pirate stresses too much and doesn't eat when he's put into a kennel. Missy just makes herself comfortable and starts to try and boss everyone around :)

I stress less knowing that they are at home with someone rather than trying to get them in their cages and drive for 45mins with Missy howling in the car and then driving home for another 45mins.

My 2 are a bit on the chubby side and I would hate for them to escape and for someone to think they could be good for food. I've been told that in the villages in the New Territories they still eat dogs and cats. I don't want to risk it.

Ask your vet if they can recommend someone who will come to your house each day to feed/care for and play with the animals. Alternatively you might want to look at a boarding kennel, they might do a special price if you book both animals in - they will need to be up to date with vaccinations.

The best way to do it if possible (IMO) is to get a friend or family member you can trust to come and stay at your house. That way there is the security of having someone you know in the house as well as knowing the pets are cared for (making sure they are trustworthy enough to look after the animals of course).
