I never end up hiring DVDs because I can never decide what to get, so do me a favour and recommend a movie ;) What's your favourite movie and why ... or just a movie that you enjoyed ... or one that you hated but think I might enjoy.

Ahem, I'm ashamed to say that I mostly fall asleep watching movies so can't recommend anything. Can remember the last time I watched a movie without falling asleep. LOL

Depends what your style is? Do you like romance, action, horror, adventure, documentaries LOL I think the last great movie I saw was The Notebook...

Two of my favourite moves are subtitled French films. One is 'Amelie' because it is just so cute and sweet. The other is 'Horseman on the Roof' which is about the cholera epidemic so as you can tell, it's a drama (it won Best Foreign Film at the Oscars).
I also love older movies like 'Some Like it Hot' and 'Gentleman Prefer Blondes'. I have watched both many, many times.
For the more serious films, I really enjoyed 'Swing Kids' but it's been a long time since I saw that.
One film that absolutely traumatised me last year but I absolutely loved it, it taught me really to appreciate things in life was 'The Magdelene Sisters'.

Thanks guys ... Monty, I meant to go and see The Notebook, I read it ages ago so I'd like to see the movie so I'll put that one on my list. Haven't heard of Big Fish but will look into it as well.
Semele, I quite liked Amelie, one of the few movies we saw at the cinema. If you're into subtitled movies, have you seen "Goodbye Lenin"? (German, I think??) ... I haven't but I'm keen to see it.
Floria, lol @ falling asleep ... I don't fall asleep but I do have problems concentrating for 2 hours at a time which is why I prefer to watch DVDs at home - I can come back and finish it later.

Yes, I have seen 'Goodbye Lenin', it's quite good but not my favourite.
I'm hopeless at picking movies from their titles. My Son usually tells me to watch a movie, and generally (if its not gory) I do enjoy it!
I love the "Troy", Last Samurai, King Arthur type movies. :-) I really enjoyed The Day After Tomorrow, and I,Robot was good too!
This week we watched a Jet Li movie, called Kiss of the Dragon. I am not usually keen on those kung Fu films, but I did enjoy this one. :-)

The last really good movie I saw was Million Dollar Baby.....it is a good one for a man, or a woman. But if you're anything like me, let me just say....at the end, I cried like someone shot my cat.

I enjoyed Spanglish & Love Actually. We usually wait till they come out on DVD, but I think Charlie & the Chocolate Factory will have to be a big screen experience for the kids. Friday night is DVD and finger food night in front of the TV for us, so haven't seen any movies that aren't G/PG rated for a while LOL.

I thoroughly enjoyed "Love Actually" too! One all time favourite older movie I enjoyed was "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeves & Jane Seymour. This movie is different from the average movie, somewhat haunting and mystical.
Oh and I mustn't forget the VERY first "Incredible Journey" Walt Disney Movie made many years ago, this movie started me off on my love for Siamese Cats, which continues to this day..

A Very Long Engagement - with the same woman that was in Amelie was a great movie which should be available to rent and the recent Crash with Sandra Bullock is also a good film to catch in the cinemas at the moment.

Just last week we watched Love Actually, and it was great, loved it, the next night we watched Under the tuscan sun, with Diane Lane in it, it was a beautiful movie, really enjoyed it.
Other than that I can never remember them too far back.

I have a few all time fave movies but the one that has really stuck with me is Shawshank Redemption with Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. I think it is based on a true story too. A few others I really like are Pretty In Pink (Molly Ringwald), Where The Heart Is (Natalie Portman) and Pay It Forward (Helen Hunt). These were a must-have for my dvd collection.

Any Hugh Grant movie for me will do :D
But if you're looking for something more current, "Brokeback Mountain" is a must-see. The gay scenes are minimal and relegated to the background because of the great acting and love story between the 2 very masculine :) cowboys.
