Is there a minute silence at the shops on 11th Nov? I wouldn't know I'm always at work - where I might add, nobody takes any notice at 11am.

Yes there is.....and even those who have no idea what it is for, stand still so they don't stand out
So I don't see what the problem would be to have the same on Anzac Day.

No, I wouldn't go. But then I am from a different generation..I went to many Anzac day marches. I lived accross the road from the RSL so it was just something I grew up with. Our local shopping centre used to have a 1 minute silence on the 11/11 but as I dont work now I do not know if it is still the practice.
I think it may take another war for the some of the younger generation to start respecting what the day symbolises.
Sorry Mandi this is only my opinion..and if I have said anything to upset you here,I apologise, but it is something I have thought about in the last few years.

No I wouldn't shop there... The shops don't need to be open and I think that sometimes people just have to make the most of some free time and get out and do something... We have Sunday trading but I avoid going as I think Sunday is a day to do things with my family.

I always take a minutes silence on 11/11 at 11.. not sure if the shops still do it.. last year i was in my car and happy that it was observed my radio station.

    Re: Would you?

Most of our shops are still open on Rememberence Sunday, everywhere has two minutes silence both then and on the 11th if it falls on a different day, most radio and tv stations, shops, you can even see people just standing in the street even if there is no formal gathering.I stand wether I'm at home or out.

Our tv and radio stations always mention Anzac Day and nearly always explain why, which is a good thing, keeps the young people informed about the past.

We are a 24 hour society, with most shops being open 7 days a week. the only two days a year our big retail businesses close is Easter Sunday and Christmas Day and I think if they were allowed to open then they would.

    Re: Would you?

Hmmm. The RSL kinda annoy me. I know they do good work but they are a boys club who expect everyone to do just what they want because they went to war. Angering people is not a way to make them respect you or do what you want, you think they of all groups would know that.

That being said I don't see the reason for the shops to want to be open except to get more money but again, why does the RSL think Kmart can't be open when I have to be in an office taking bookings for tourists? Whats the difference?

I respect what went on, certainly the individual soldiers but I know just how TOTALLY pointless war is. They fought for our freedom and whatnot but heres the thing, a couple of generations later my BF and my cousin are great great friends....My BF's grandfather was in the dutch resistance, my cousin's grandfather (not mine) was in the Gestapo. They are mortal enemies and yet here are BF and I together for 6 years now.

I do the minute silence if I can. But if the phone rings in that minute and I don't answer it, I get fired.

the retailers traders assocation has come out against it (which surprises me)...and say they dont think they should be allowed to trade.

All shops open,I think it's stores who either employ over a certain number of people or have sos many square feet of trading floor have to close on ES and CD. Smaller ones can open for limited hours, usually Sunday hours ( 10 till 4 )
