I'm old enough to remember when the shops closed at lunchtime on a Saturday and there was no late night shopping..........we all seemed to manage then and we didn't starve.

I don't know if I would go. But it seems these special days are really losing their importance, and they are considered not as special.
I have not read the article in the first post but I think I heard it was Kmart that wanted to open on Anzac day, isn't it enough that they close at midnight on weekdays now. I called on Monday afternoon to ask about something in the catalogue and I said to the young boy, "What time do you close?", as I couldn't remeber if it was 5:30 0r 6:00. his reply was, "midnight". I was like, "why do you open so late?", he said, "to make more money". I was like of cousre.

I was going to post the exact same thing! I take the day as a day to spend with family and as my children get older each year, educate them about our fallen soldiers. I don't think we 'need' the shops open

    Re: Would you?

Anzac day is for rememberance and reflection.

    Not Shopping.

We live in this great land due to the courage and sacrifice of those that came before us.
Both my Grandfathers made that " ultimate sacrifice."

I did not recognise the role of Grandfathers or the things both they and I missed out on together.
Mine were dead in the war..As a child I did not understand...my mum would cry if I asked questions, I did not know that grown ups cried until then.
Now as a parent, I have seen what Grandfathers do.

My dad and my father in law have had a fabulous, loving and special relationship with my two sons.
The loss I feel of my own Grandfathers is stronger now than ever.

Anzac day for me is a very sad day.
We all have marched with sadness and pride in their memory.
As a family we feel very strongly about Anzac day and will never let their memory die!
It is all we have of them.

Kmart really isnt important, is it!

    Re: Would you?

I'd go if I had to for a really good reason but to spend money or look around for no reason then no...

I liked your answer Louise. I used to get up and go to the dawn service with my grandad..A pleasant but fading memory these days.

I wouldn't go in Australia we don't seem to respect many special days it's not going to kill people to go half a day without shopping.
TO KNOW SOMEONE HERE OR THERE WITH WHOM YOU FEEL THERE IS AN UNDERSTANDING IN SPITE OF DISTANCES OR THOUGHTS UNEXPRESSED----THAT CAN MAKE OF THIS EARTH A GARDEN.
