If it would detract from drinking time then no.

Nope. No way would I go shopping on ANZAC Day. If anyone was worried about running short of bread or milk etc..that's easy fixed - buy extra the day before. And who really desperately needs to go to KMart (or any other store) on that day? For what? Emergency pots, pans, clothes, toys.... really? Sheesh.

Not everyone goes to Anzac Day parades or memorial services.... some of us just sit at home and wait for something to open so we have something to do.

edited to say: I AM thankful to all the men and women who protect our country both past and present but I don't see how getting up before dawn and dragging my son to a dreary (yes! they are dreary!!) memorial service makes me any less thankful for their actions.
You have that freedom of choice because people fought and died to achieve it...So enjoy, but please, dont forget many did not return to share that freedom...

    Re: Would you?

My father fought in WWII and the anniversary of his death falls around the same time as ANZAC Day so it's a poignant time for me. But the way I see it, the freedom that they fought for includes being able to trade when we want to and not bow to the objections of a few. We spend the day at home btw and I always tell my kids about their grandfather and what he did. Respect for the fallen isn't about what shops are open or not open IMO.
