I don't like them much either, also think they're too doughy. Every year I say I'm going to have a go at making my own, but I haven't so far. Anyone ever had homemade? Or made them yourself?

I made the....weren't too bad but I crashed miserably piping the X.
For all the work involved....much easier buying them.
